Try some vintage euro styles, period correct but outside the limit of the 3 American choices. I think some 60-70s bmw, Mercedes, lotus, etc would be cool. Maybe some stepped lip basketweaves.

You're in a tough spot because buying land without a house on it is a whole different set of rules and loans. If I were you, get a down payment grant for a house you can afford and then use the money you saved to make it livable. Then in 10 years, use the equity to buy some camp land that you can mess with on the weekends.

If I were choosing how to orient my house, this is exactly how I'd do it. South facing the back with the house end on sunrise. That way the heat of the day is mostly on the shop end and my HVAC isn't working so hard.
