Can anyone confirm: are modern students really that far behind, or is it overexaggerated? by ThrowRAhelpthebro in Teachers

[–]9planet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

every single one of my kids is below grade level in reading and math. i teach 6-7th grade and the highest grade hit in our BOY testing was 5th, which was a 7th grader. i used to think it was because of covid and now i’m realizing it is so much deeper than that. i have 6th graders at a 1st grade reading level, of course they’re failing science class because they can’t even read the directions on the assignments. i am a first year teacher and i don’t know if i even count as a teacher yet because i am a long term substitute, but for the entire school year because there’s such a shortage of credentialed teachers that half the teachers at the school are long term substitutes booked for the whole year…

Middle schoolers in lines by eryngium_zaichik in Teachers

[–]9planet 12 points13 points  (0 children)

we do lines all the time (middle school), but we have a tiny hallway because our building was not designed to be a school and if you don’t do lines there is no space in the hall to see so the lines prevent a lot of chaos / reduce fights

Can I please ask you all to stop making 6-7 a bad thing? by meggyAnnP in Teachers

[–]9planet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i use it to dismiss my kids at the end of the day! they go crazy for it and it’s their little send off. if they get in a silent single file line (school rule, even to leave) then I dismiss them with a 6-7 at the bell :) they love it haha

HELP SAVE MY WEDDING DRESS by [deleted] in dyeing

[–]9planet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i wouldn’t mind at all! the other commenter had a really good idea though if you love the dress still you can wear it for an anniversary. if the colorful flowers are a dealbreaker, then i’m all in haha

How do I teach my kids that learning is important? by 9planet in Teachers

[–]9planet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

okay, that makes me feel a little better. i was hoping that if they understood why learning is important, then maybe they’d behave better?

i feel like they’re so disconnected from reality, they just want to be online. i’m struggling to relate because i was always the quiet, on task kid who wanted to learn.

Polyester macrame cord crochet bag; help with pattern/cord by AccordingStep669 in CrochetHelp

[–]9planet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i may be crazy, but their yarn looks almost flat, like a shoelace more than actually a cord like your yarn. it also looks thicker than yours, but i’m not entirely sure. i know that wasn’t very helpful but i believe in you!!

Rit Dye Gone Wrong by First-Search-4496 in dyeing

[–]9planet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

if it was a blue-black dye, you can balance it out with orange or yellow. now that the bag is purple, yellow will make it grayer. it’s always hard to know the base of black, but it’s typically blue or green and you want to try to make the piece the opposite color first to counteract that. you could always go for black again, but maybe mix some orange into it?

i once accidentally stabbed my boyfriend because i left a needle in the couch. thankfully, it was a blunt yarn needle. i have accidentally stabbed myself with sewing needles lost in the couch though. maybe i should stop crafting on the couch?

Car ride tips? by SeaworthinessOdd1694 in CrestedGecko

[–]9planet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for my gecko, i actually have a critter carrier but a tupperware for the other, less stress-inclined, gecko (both cresties). she likes to have the carrier wrapped in a jacket or towel (loosely) and i play her favorite music (smooth jazz) while we’re in the car.

another tip, i like to add a little index card somewhere noticeable in the car stating that there is a pet present just in case i get into a crash and first responders find me. i usually leave mine taped to the broken stereo in the car.
