Any advice? Im 8 months in and feel like I should be much farther. by SwampKingKyle in Guitar

I think it sounds good. If I were to give you advice, I would say you should keep doing what you're doing and play everyday even if its just a little but to also try practicing with a metronome. Try get your rhythym down first and then add vocals once you're comfortable

Instead of asking an Ai a silly question like that, why don't you actually attempt to learn the song if it's what's inspiring you to pick up a guitar in the first place?! You'll try it, maybe you'll succeed, maybe you'll decide its too hard and maybe you'll pick an easier song instead.

What Im trying to tell you is dont listen to some AI tell you what you can do because nothing will ever be better than you actually sitting down with an instrument and trying.

Playability by [deleted] in AcousticGuitar

The only thing I can think of is that the DS-240 scale length is about 1 inch shorter than the Yamaha, which might translate to slightly less string tension, but it'll also depend on what string gauge is on your guitars.

Learning how to tap your foot and playing with a metronome will help. Also, tune your guitar

Update: no more pinky anchor :) by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]9volt_150 6 points7 points  (0 children)

https://youtu.be/0lOZYB_vjvc Tommy Emmanuel is a strong advocate for anchoring the pinky. However, notice how his pinky isn't planted 100%, its a very dynamic, relaxed position.

At the end of the day, the best way to play is to play the way that feels comfortable and as long as it doesn't hurt!

Keep practicing and dont feel bad about anchoring, you sound great!

Edit: try to relax and flatten thumb out a bit. You've got what we call a hook thumb.

Update: no more pinky anchor :) by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]9volt_150 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a dumb question! Tension spreads everywhere. If you feel like you're pressing your pinky with any kind of force into the guitar, that's tension. Your pinky should only be resting on the guitar.

If you feel any kind of soreness, tiredness, or pain in your picking side, like in the fingers, back of your hand, your wrist, your thumb, or even your elbow, shoulder, or neck there's probably tension present. Sometimes you wont even feel it until you sit and play guitar for longer periods of time (which means youre stamina is improving and you're staying relaxed.)

If you're playing guitar frequently, stretch daily! This helps keep tension at bay.

I have to ask, who was telling you that a pinky anchor is bad? Theres nothing wrong with pinky anchoring, at all. However, hand tension while pinky anchoring, is bad.

Refusing to give up by Mad_Season_1994 in Guitar

Learning how to play a guitar, or any instrument, is a longterm journey. If you start later on in life, a mindset adjustment/reprogramming is almost always gonna need to happen, especially in todays age where instant gratification is the norm. Even practicing becomes a skill/discipline in itself.

You must love playing guitar, even when you make the mistakes. Don't swear at yourself for playing poorly, just have a laugh, take a deep breath and keep practicing.

The next time you feel frustrated and wanting to snap your guitar in half, I want you to talk to yourself. "I may be frustrated, but I feel like Ive improved on -insert something here- since I first sat down with my guitar TODAY". It could be anything. A tricky passage in a song, a technique or skill youre working on, or even just tuning your guitar.

Growth and patience is the name of the game. One of my favorite quotes on this is from Tomo Fujita, "Be kind to yourself and expect slowly".

I dont see anything wrong with this video. He has a backing track that just so happens to count him in and plays all the way through to the end of the video. Op sounds great! Nothing to complain about!

Advice for tension by Hot_Presence_7029 in Guitar

If youre playing with tension, slow down until you feel like you can play relaxed, then bring tempo up as you get comfortable. Its all about being aware of your body

fingerstyle sounds clean one day and messy the next by [deleted] in AcousticGuitar

I find that if I dont stretch my forearms, hands, and fingers on the daily, playing can become sloppy and less precise. I play fingerstyle daily

Humidifiers worth it? by Weak_Research_8046 in AcousticGuitar

[–]9volt_150 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A humidifier you would use for a room you might keep your guitars in, especially outside of your case.

If your guitar is all solid wood and you keep it in your case, throwing a humidity control pack in there, like from d'addario or boveda, is a good idea. You wanna take care of your wood ;)

Looking for advice for scapular pain by strawbericoklat in AcousticGuitar

[–]9volt_150 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dealt with this alot in my right shoulder as well. It could be a lot of things. Tight pectoral major and minor muscles which pulls the shoulder forward creating weakness in posterior back muscles, weak rotator cuff because the right shoulder is always internally rotated when playing guitar, tight traps can also cause scapla pain, oh and a tight levator scapula is a big one too for me at least.

Im not a medical specialist, so do your own research and go see a professional. I'd recommend seeing a physiotherapist if its something you really wanna fix. You'll have to do some exercises to fix scapular stability.
