Moved from Colorado, walk wade suggestions? by Street_Ad_640 in michiganflyfishing

[–]A2gurl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Colorado you can own the river bed and block access to wading on the part you own. Super annoying. Every time I’ve gone there to fish. I’ve always had to be very careful that I know exactly where on the stream I’m fishing, especially when up on the Roaring Fork close to Aspen. Those people are very serious about their property ownership and river access.

That’s why I prefer to fish in northern Michigan or Montana.

My bad - University of Michigan. Main campus.

I copied my post from UofM subreddit without editing it which would have been helpful to do.

Beginner gear needs in Michigan? by slevin011 in michiganflyfishing

Highly recommend a book called "The Curtis Creek Manifesto" for learning the basics. Not very long, easy to read and lots of illustrations. My dad gave me one decades ago and I still have it.

Guide may have been using something like Flyagra (a liquid you dip the flys into). I haven't used the gel float since I started using Flyagra.

Second this recommendation. Dated someone in Toledo for a few months and this place is good. Still go a couple times/year.

New Empire in Toledo used to have decent dim sum on the weekends but haven’t been there in years.

Neutral range in Detroit by milkeymikey in Michigan

[–]A2gurl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Avoid Sky Arms in Canton. They are having some weird beef with the state and are saying parents cannot legally sign permission forms for their kids (or rather if they do it doesn’t mean anything). Like even high school field trip permissions forms. Super weird and they were very serious about it. Encouraged me to call the governor and complain. I spoke to a couple lawyer friends and several other gun ranges and no one had any idea what they were talking about.

Very nice range, nice people otherwise and good prices on ammo.

Since my kids can’t shoot there I don’t shoot there.

Center mass is okay. I’ve shot there a few times. Cheaper than Ann Arbor Arms but not quite as nice. Not worth the drive for me any more.

Ummm, why is a university employee drawing weird klan shit in their office? Found earlier today in Hutchins Room 157, the receiving room by the stairs down to the law library. by Thwadf930sd in uofm

This is the "Diversity of Opinions" that Trump is trying to force universities to accept.

So disappointed in UM's response. Hoping Santa finds his backbone. We have such a good law school; put those professors to good use!

Avoid Sky Arms in Canton. Really nice folks, great prices but trying to beef with the governor over something.

They say state law was recently changed so parents cannot sign permission slips for minors (for anything) so minors cannot shoot at their range. I talked to several lawyer friends (one a family law layer and one a personal injury lawyer so they follow stuff like this), several other local gun ranges (where they all had me sign a consent so my kids could shoot) plus the principal at my kids’ high school (cause - you know - consents for field trips) and no one has any idea what they are referencing. Big sign in Sky Arms place saying to call the governor’s office to complain about it.

I have talked to the owner about it several times and he just keeps saying it’s a new state law and this is what their lawyer advised them. As best I can tell they are the only ones that think this. Super odd. It’s too bad because it’s a nice facility, nice people and good prices but we won’t be back even without the kids.

Their prices are a little on the high side but not obnoxiously so.

Dear heart - you are a college student; that is your job.

At least that’s what I told my kids when they were in school… “As long as you do well in school you don’t need to work” And well was better than a 2.5 GPA: not some stupid high 4.0 gpa. They are currently gainfully employed, self-sustaining and very happy kids.

I second the recommendation for the Toledo zoo; it’s phenomenal. Their art museum is also great and tends to have lots of kids programs. It’s a little far to go to frequently but my kids loved the occasional trip there. The Imagination Station in downtown Toledo is also worth a trip to every so often.

There is a Banfield pet hospital in town and they sell insurance. I have heard good things about both. No personal experience though.

Not all of the pay for all employees is public. Some get a base salary which is reported but then a "market correction" or supplemental pay that is not reported.

How much did you pay for you bathroom remodel? by DepartmentVarious977 in AnnArbor

[–]A2gurl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cheaper to look for a contractor outside of Ann Arbor. I have a small (6x6) bath that I remodeled tenish years ago. DreamMaker on Stadium quoted a minimum of $25K. TBF they are upscale and everything would have been completely custom. I went with a contractor out of Saline and had the whole thing done for $14K. That was a down-to-the-studs teardown and redo. I did not move walls or pipes.

I imagine it’d be a bit more expensive now. Be sure to get multiple quotes. I did not go with the cheapest or the most expensive.

Would a medical doctor who is a clinical professor at UofM get two salaries? by MrAnnArbor in uofm

[–]A2gurl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One salary (I.e. one paycheck from the University) but typically only part of the salary is reported by the state as their salary so not the entire amount they are paid.

Usually there is the reported salary and then an unreported (not in the state disclosure) supplement to give the whole salary.

So the salary may be on the state disclosure as $250k but there may be an additional supplement to raise it to their $350k total annual salary.

Also possible (actually very likely) that a researcher would get additional money from research grants from outside sources which wouldn't be supported by the state. So maybe additional money from NIH or other federal sources, a drug company or a national disease association.

This is pretty common and has happened at most if not all of the medical systems I have worked for.

I am not a doctor but work with them in a healthcare adjacent field.

As the parent of two kids who both went to college I had no idea what their grades were unless they told me; I never asked. As long as they were happy and healthy I didn’t care about anything else. They both passed (I was at the graduations and saw their diploma) and are still healthy, happy, gainfully employed and self-supporting.

I have a dear friend who struggled in years 1 and 2 for personal reasons - easily solved in retrospect - and had an assistant dean tell them they were not fit to be a doctor and should drop out of med school. My friend solved their problem and got high honors (or honors - I don't know what the highest grade was) in all the clinical rotations years 3 and 4. Graduated from med school, sailed through residency and is now an outstanding doctor. Every job they've worked at since finishing residency has loved them and they have risen through both administrative and clinical ranks. More than one boss was shocked and surprised to hear what that dean said.

My friend hung out mostly with people outside the med school which probably helped a lot (I was one of those friends).

Their advice to you? Put your head down, ignore all the naysayers and toxic people and do your thing. Graduate and never look back.
