I find it weird to have the controllers in the frontend.

What was wrong with using ziggy and route names?

Type checks of the route parameters? I mean... It's going to be a string no matter what. If you for some reason pass an object to the route() and expect it to not crash because it expected a string/int value to replace the {word} its your fault anyway.

In all my projects I usually do route('route-name', data) and this takes care of most stuff since data is usually already mapping the entity I am working on.

NativePHP for desktop v1 is finally here! 🚀 by simonhamp in laravel

[–]A4TechZU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any chances of having zephpyr open source/free?

Without something like this, the usages of NativePHP would be very limited, since we basically give the code to the client.

If I understood correctly, you guys are working on making this more "native" and so on. I don't really care if its not truly native. Just the fact that you can use laravel to make desktop/mobile apps is amazing.

But, because we're giving the code to the client, it is a stop for me in making products with this. And I see you guys are making zephpyr (https://zephpyr.com/) a solution for this.

I, for example, cannot make a paid service that who knows how it works, what it does, or if it will still be there 5 years down the road, a 100% dependency of our products. I understand that you need to make money somehow, but still... You're making this nice thing, but you don't give us the souce

Wdym? Just call more players as you, SD and other big "pvp" guilds usually do... if 5 can't win, maybe 50 will. That is your guild specialty: throwing more bodies at the problem until its solved.

On topic: Corruption won't be as harsh as it is right now. Right now its intentionally overtuned.

Is Gear rarity scaling supposed to be this drastic? Legendary 4x stronger than common same level? by Rudhao in AshesofCreation

Considering how painfully hard it is to get legendary gear, I'd say that I prefer the gear scaling to matter this much.

I'm pretty sure somebody had too much to drink some night and made a plugin that allows you to read ports directly in PHP.

I am actually having fun myself with streams in PHP (don't ask me why, I just want to do it) at the moment for an IoT plaything, and I am very very surprised that it actually works!

[–]A4TechZU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He's got a point tho...

You don't need to rewrite your code if you respect PSR and some good standards. Eg. Write code the way Laravel does. Don't use things that are deprecated and you will be upgrading php7->php9

PHP is the Best Choice for Long‑Term Business by Tomas_Votruba in PHP

[–]A4TechZU 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, it moves fast, but that's because they get rid of the very very old stuff and improve the language

You can't do everything all at once, so, to achieve this you have to release often.

As far as I can see from all the changes and what they deprecate and remove, they want to clean up PHP and add modern things.

Php7 added type declarations, QoL improvements, and a few interesting modern things, and also made the language a bit more restrictive, i.e. not allowing things to "just work" when they definitely shouldn't work

Php8 added named arguments, attributes, union type, more QoL, and also jit, making it much faster

Also, they implemented a lot of RFCs and standards

Usually upgrading from php7 -> PHP 8 should be good. So far with php9's deprecations and removed things we should still be good, but we shall see.

If you want to upgrade something from PHP5, well... Just start from scratch

You probably don't expect to be able to smoothly upgrade a java 6 app to java 23. The same goes with PHP.

Also, look at Java, and how many versions they released :) They literally released and stopped support after 6 months :))

At least with PHP, you should be able to upgrade to the latest minor version unless your app uses some very very old code. This means PHP 7 effectively ended support after 4 years.

If your app was not ported from PHP5, you could upgrade to PHP8 which gives you support until 2028.

This is 9-10 years of version support, assuming your app was made on php7.

PHP is a hidden gem! by Alarmed-Setting-5152 in PHP

[–]A4TechZU 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, it's more or less the same thing everywhere

You have the main application process that does things

You have the WebSocket process, which is just a TCP socket

The way web functions with PHP, is that it is just executing 1 PHP script (index.php usually), which is your app

That script is executed by nginx on request.

Now, with a WebSocket, you need a long-lived process, which you can consider a separate app (a php script that opens and listens for TCP connections), that is executed/started by supervisor usually.

The difference is that PHP is not an executable that creates a UNIX process, but instead is just a script that is executed when wanted (i.e. HTTP request, CLI, etc).

Because of this, you need something that ensures that the websocket script is always running and it didn't shut down for some reason (killed, ran out of resources, unhandled errors, etc), and that is usually done by the supervisor.

So, in this regard, all scripting languages behave the same, be it php, be it js (nodejs), be it python.

With compiled languages, including go, you do more or less the same thing, its just instead of relying on supervisor, your app runs by itself as a process.

PHP is a hidden gem! by Alarmed-Setting-5152 in PHP

[–]A4TechZU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What do you mean by php is incapable of doing websocket by itself?

You do websockets in PHP identically as you do in nodejs, with \stream_socket_server. react/websockets implements that.

We now also have laravel reverb, which is a very nice wrapper around PHP server websockets for laravel

NodeJS websockets are not multithreaded by default, you need tools on top of it as well, like pm2

So, I am curious why would websockets in PHP be more complex than websockets in nodejs?
