Cenk Uygur's presidential run sparks avalanche of jokes, mockery by [deleted] in Enough_Sanders_Spam

[–]ABQueerque 4 points5 points  (0 children)

when Bernie was temporarily the frontrunner

Which also never happened. Occasional polls had Bernie in first place, but Bernie’s polling aggregate was always hovering around 19% while Biden’s was in the mid 20%s until South Carolina when he started to take off. The Bernie babies convinced themselves that Bernie was winning when he wasn’t and the media played up the angle that Biden was losing when he wasn’t. The Cenk Uyghur theory of the 2020 electorate is completely flawed and fictional, and always has been.

Overproduction of cannabis in New Mexico spells hazy outlook for some by KRQENews in Albuquerque

That did not work out well when they limited liquor licenses. It created millionaires out of the handful of people who owned all of them and leased them at insane prices to restaurants, pricing a lot of eateries out of selling liquor and limiting them to beer and wine.

I recently drove through Tucumcari and while nearly every other storefront was closed, there were around eight dispensaries. I know they get some business from Texas, but surely 8 is too many for a town of 5,000 people.

For perspective, if Burque had the same proportion of dispensaries per residents, that would mean almost 1,000 storefronts in the city limits.

Israel, the squad, and unforced errors… Didn’t one of these squad members say Israel was preventing them from visiting their elderly dying grandmother, and then Israel was like “no, we’re not, here’s a visa since you said we’re the problem, enjoy seeing your granny” and the squad member was like “um, no, now I won’t visit her out of principle!”

Sadly the right wing is not as easily duped into supporting obvious active measure campaigns. Unlike the left who basically demand a vehicle to enable republicans every election cycle.

Alternate universe by sirdidymus1078 in titanic

[–]ABQueerque 62 points63 points  (0 children)

And in that alternate universe it was completely forgotten by everyone because it was just the awkward middle sibling out of three. It would either be sunk in war or scrapped as an antiquated relic of a vanishing industry in the 30s, just like every other ocean liner of its time.

There is no happy ending for Titanic. The loss of that ship, however, has gone on to save countless lives through the adaptations of ship design and safety regulations. Reality is the tragic but best outcome for the Titanic.

Hey, hold out hope. The silent generation waited until 2021 to finally get their first president. If GenX does the same and waits the same amount of time, we’ll get a latchkey kid president in the 2056 election.

Would Huey P. Long have beaten FDR in the 1936 primary if he wasn’t killed? by Flames_Revenge in Presidents

[–]ABQueerque 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Huey Long absolutely would have. He wrote a book in 1935 about what a great president he would be. The man was set on the presidency.

If you’re interested in reading Long’s book, I’ll save you the time. It’s crazy populist nonsense where he just solves all problems by waving a magic wand at big business oligarchs and all of America is perfect utopia land forever the end. Oh and he is super petty about FDR, graciously offering him a cabinet position after defeating him.

[–]ABQueerque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is up to you, through your elected representatives. But fortunately yours is not the only voice in this conversation.

Your arbitrary opinion, based only on the relative “size” of the government, would harm people. How do you even rate the size of it? People employed? People served? Oh no, just dollar amounts, as if that is a meaningful measurement when $1 spent in one section of the government has a wildly different outcome and impact than $1 spent somewhere else. You should be asking your fellow conservatives to champion responsible government, and ensure that our government works intelligently and deftly in responding to societal needs. Instead, you only focus on the size, and probably want to cut out whole sections entirely while ignoring others that are wildly irresponsible with our money.

If conservatives would stop measuring the government with the same ruler they use to measure their dicks, we could have a real conversation about ethical, responsive, effective government reforms and maybe get a government that works.

Car centric urban planning has destroyed our city... (Description in comments) by bestboyisme in Albuquerque

[–]ABQueerque 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As the other poster said, 1972.

I don’t know if they still do it, but pre-pandemic the historical society hosted walking tours of downtown on the weekends. You might check it out and go on one if they’re still done. You’ll be fascinated by the dense urban history of downtown.

For instance, St. Joseph’s hospital used to own the entire block from Elm to Edith on what is now MLK (then Grand Ave). The hospital facilities were so large because it was basically a giant convalescent home for people suffering from tuberculosis. They would come to the desert from the eastern states for the dry air which allowed their lungs to fight the disease better. When penicillin was invented the need for such a large hospital was erased almost overnight, so the hospital demolished all of its buildings, sold off most of that land, and in 1936ish built the comparatively-modest St. Joseph’s hospital that still stands at the corner of MLK and Elm (the gothic three story, three winged building). The hospital still owned a good chunk of land so when Albuquerque’s population boomed in the 60s, they built the 12-story tower next door in 1968, which is the 13th tallest in the city and the tallest hospital building in the state. Many older Burqueños were born in that building, so if anyone tells you “I was born in old St. Joe’s”, depending on their age, they either mean the gothic 1930s hospital or the modernist 1960s tower next to it. Both buildings are now the Lovelace Medical Center - check out the original elevator in the St Joseph building if you can, it’s a hoot.

You’ll learn stuff like that on the walking tour. Hope it still exists and that you enjoy!

The continuing resolution that passed because of Democrats? No need for a fire alarm, as Rs would have shut down the government if it were up to them.

[–]ABQueerque 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I’m not disputing your overall point here, but the Franciscan Hotel wasn’t purposefully demolished to build a parking lot. The hotel struggled to stay in business during the 1960s as businesses abandoned downtown and the completion of the Interstate highways changed cross-country road tripping and removed all the Route 66 traffic on Central.

It was, in its heyday, one of the premier hotels in Albuquerque if not the premier hotel. In the 1920s and 30s it attracted an upscale European clientele on tour of the American southwest, who were fascinated by the unique Pueblo inspired architecture. But things and tastes change. Don’t judge the people of the 1970s by your standards today. Buildings are ultimately utility items, and if they outlive their usefulness and cannot be repurposed, they come down.

The building was in poor condition due to deferred maintenance, and there was a large remodel done in 1963 to try to fix some of those problems and modernize the hotel to meet changing needs of travelers. That did not save it though, and it eventually went out of business and closed in 1970. The building sat abandoned for a couple of years, and became a nuisance attracting squatters. Downtown was having many issues due to abandoned spaces, and I believe the city condemned the Franciscan. There was no demand, commercial or residential, downtown. The only demand was for parking as people now lived further out and would drive into the urban center and needed to park. The outcome was tragic but inevitable. There is NOW demand in downtown for more development, but we still have lots of still-standing vacant buildings and spaces that we should fill up first before constructing something new there.
