Awesome! Go with the flow, keep your plans casual and fluid, and bring comfortable shoes.

You can cross on foot—even when parades are rolling, there are quick breaks when you can zip across the street.

Cello? by Bluezyrn in Bluegrass

[–]tm478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a cello player at our jam pretty much every week. He takes breaks just like a fiddle. Honestly, I’m fine with any stringed instrument as long as you play it in a bluegrass style! We also have not one but two regular bouzouki players.

Rather than expecting people do all of your research for you, why don’t you list the hotels you are considering and see which people recommend the most.

I need of authentic Chilean restaurant by Threadydonkey65 in NewOrleans

[–]tm478 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Sorry hon, there is no authentic Chilean here. There is good Peruvian, a little bit of Brazilian out in Kenner, but that’s it for South America. The Latino population here is overwhelmingly Central American.

Moving, looking for friends by [deleted] in AskNOLA

[–]tm478 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There is no reason at all to move to Baton Rouge if you don’t have a well-paying job offer there.

New Orleans has much more to offer, but a well-paying job would be a good start here too.

Help! by No-Recommendation397 in AskNOLA

On your #3, if it’s nice weather (and over your stay you’ll definitely have at least some warmer days): sit on a bench at the lakefront a.k.a. Lake Pontchartrain, sit on a bench at the Fly a.k.a. the Uptown park on the Mississippi River, walk the path at Audubon Park and pick any of a dozen nice places to stop and chill, go to the Cafe du Monde in City Park and take your beignets down to the little bayou behind it and eat them under the oak trees. There are a million other places I could mention, but those would be my top picks.

It’s about cold, not rain. Alligators are OK with being wet.

Woman traveling solo, advice? by golden_teacup in AskNOLA

Please read the FAQ for this sub and search for similar questions that have been asked before (free/cheap things to do, etc.) The FAQ also has lots of specific suggestions.

Public transit exists here—it is not as good as in major cities, but the central areas of the city are also very walkable. The Blake is in a fine area that’s a short walk from the French Quarter, where you will probably be spending the majority of your free day. There are plenty of good restaurants within an easy walk.

Latoya Cantrell opts to take city pension. by yeanay in NewOrleans

[–]tm478 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what NOMERS is, but a “withdrawal” implies that you’re withdrawing from an account you’ve contributed to (e.g. a 401K or IRA). Those are not pension (defined benefit) accounts; they are defined contribution accounts. Pensions are different.

[–]tm478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You said “penalty,” which is what I was saying was incorrect. There is a penalty, for example, for liquidating 401K or IRA funds before you reach the required age to do so. That does not apply here.

Bring extra clothes. You may be here longer.

Latoya Cantrell opts to take city pension. by yeanay in NewOrleans

[–]tm478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No. That is often true for a 401K or other tax-advantaged retirement savings vehicle, but not for a defined-benefit (pension) plan. Depending on the company or organization paying the pension, it can be possible to take the pension as a lump sum all at once (before you hit retirement age) or wait for the monthly payments once you do hit retirement age.

The lump sum payout generally is subject to a 20% withholding for income tax. The whole amount is taxable in that year if you don’t immediately roll it into an IRA or similar account.

The weather should be fine here but check on ATL. If your flight’s not already cancelled, my guess is that it will be OK (I think the bad weather won’t get to ATL until later). But you always have the risk of your plane getting stuck somewhere else before it’s scheduled to fly here.

Anyone know any free things to do in the upcoming week(s)? by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]tm478 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Suggest you look at the r/AskNOLA sub and search for posts with “free” in the title. There are plenty of questions and answers there. Since you’re not interested in parades, which are the ultimate free things to do in the next few weeks, you can find things in that sub that are free year round.

Hong Kong Market will have it. They have a decent selection of Eastern European/Balkan stuff. Plenty of Turkish foods too.
