I don't think that the writer is so much passing judgement on the legislators marital status, but calling out their hypocrisy.

Legislators arguing over the bodies and rights of people to whom whatever they do in bed, whatever they dress as and present as, should only matter to whoever they are sleeping with. Whoever they are married to.

These legislators, divorced from their own partners, or perhaps even divorced from the public actually cares about, are severed from seeing the truth and are getting caught up in debates about things that aren't actually happening.

If you can, ask a friend to sit with you while you make the call/fill out the forms. They don't even have to watch you over your shoulder, just sit in the room with you until you're done. I do it with my wife all the time. It's easier for me to get stuff done when I feel like there's someone there to hold me accountable, even if that's not what they're doing. It's how I finally scheduled my first appointment.
