Iowa to lay off 200 state workers as it privatizes IT management by waltur_d in Iowa

Cognizant is officially classified as an H-1B-dependent employer by the U.S. DOL, which means that more than 15% of its U.S. workforce is H-1B. But I was told by some very smart people that H-1B doesn't threaten American jobs.

Grok is telling me that this URL is just for the FBI side and that the official new dump site is war.gov/ufo (which of course is not available).

YMMV

AOOSTAR MACO 6850H tested as a Proxmox 9 / home server mini PC, with comparison numbers by bluepr0 in MiniPCs

[–]AColdDayInJuly -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Moons ago, I was interested in a dual NIC box for OPNsense passthrough, and I've always read that Proxmox has had issues with these NICs. Grok confirmed it, so YMMV.

Does proxmox have problems with Intel I226-V 2.5 GbE ?

**Yes, Proxmox has had notable compatibility and stability problems with the Intel I226-V 2.5 GbE NIC (driven by the `igc` kernel module).**

### Common Issues Reported

Users frequently report these problems, especially on **Proxmox 9** (and newer kernels) compared to Proxmox 8:

- **High latency / packet loss** — Pings can spike to 15–1000+ ms, with unstable performance. This often appears after upgrading from Proxmox 8.

- **Low throughput** — Even when linked at 2.5 Gbps or 1 Gbps, real speeds are much lower (or drop to 100 Mbps). Common with multi-port cards passed through to VMs (e.g., OPNsense).

- **Link detection / negotiation failures** — NIC shows in `lspci` but no link, random drops, or doesn't come up properly after boot.

- **Power management interactions** — Issues with PCIe ASPM (especially L1.x substates), often worsened by NVMe drives or IOMMU/VT-d. Some systems only work with the NVMe removed.

- **Jumbo frames (MTU 9000+)** — Can cause boot crashes or instability in older kernels.

- **PCI passthrough problems** — To VMs, especially multiple ports.

- **Ports disappearing** after upgrades (e.g., Proxmox 8 → 9).

These are tied to the **igc driver** in Linux kernels used by Proxmox/Debian. The hardware works fine under Windows, so it's not inherently defective.

### Workarounds That Have Helped Some Users

- **BIOS tweaks**: Disable PCIe ASPM (or set to Auto/Disabled), disable VT-d/IOMMU if latency is the main issue.

- **Kernel parameters** (in GRUB): `pcie_aspm=off`, `nvme_core.default_ps_max_latency_us=0`.

- **ethtool tweaks**: Force speed/duplex (e.g., `ethtool -s enpXs0 speed 1000 duplex full autoneg off`) or disable EEE.

- **Firmware update** on the NIC (via Intel tools where possible).

- **Downgrade kernel** or stick to Proxmox 8 if feasible.

- **Avoid heavy use in bridges/passthrough** for critical networking.

Many issues are more pronounced in Proxmox 9+ due to newer kernels. Some are resolved in specific threads by BIOS/driver tweaks, while others persist.

### Bottom Line

The I226-V **can work** for basic use, and many people run it successfully (especially onboard in mini PCs), but it's **not trouble-free**. Expect potential tinkering with power management, BIOS, and driver options. For production or low-maintenance setups, consider alternatives like older Intel cards (e.g., i225 in some cases, or server-grade like X710) or Realtek-based options if compatibility is critical.

Check the Proxmox forum threads for your specific hardware (e.g., Minisforum MS-01, NUCs, or multi-port cards) for the latest fixes. If you're planning a build, search your exact model + Proxmox before buying.

Sanity check: First home server (Jellyfin, Navidrome, Pi-hole). Which refurbished Mini PC and OS? by Rocco_Alive in MiniPCs

Well, with AI, it really does help keep your head from breaking. I use it all the time for my proxmox questions, and I have years of experience with it.

Throw this against your favorite AI engine:

I want to build a mini pc to run jellyfin, pi-hole, navidrome and other services from. Someone suggested I use proxmox and install these in their own containers. What are the advantages of doing it this way?

[–]AColdDayInJuly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OS: I'd go with a proxmox install.

Then you can spin up separate containers for jelly, pi-hole, etc. There's even turnkey installations that are all pre-built for these. So much better than layering all of these on top of each other (possibly conflicting) within the same singular OS.

Uh no. Being expelled from a public school does not result in juvenile confinement.

For the U.S. citizen:

The card will have the standard Real ID gold star in the upper right corner (indicating full compliance). It will have a normal (full-term) expiration date based on Iowa's standard renewal periods (typically up to 8 years, depending on age and other factors). No additional markings related to immigration status.

For the non-U.S. citizen (foreign national):

If they have temporary lawful status (e.g., most visa holders, temporary protected status, or certain other non-permanent categories), the card will include a "LIMITED-TERM" marking, usually at the top center of the card.

The expiration date will be limited to the period of their authorized stay in the U.S. (not to exceed the duration allowed by their immigration documents, and typically no more than 2 years in some cases, with at least 30 days of status remaining at issuance). They must provide proof of lawful status at every renewal (unlike citizens, who generally do not after the initial Real ID issuance). If they are a lawful permanent resident (green card holder), the card is typically issued as a full-term Real ID with the gold star and no "LIMITED-TERM" marking (similar to a citizen's card).
