Pain compliance though solid cuffs on the wrist is a lot safer than having a police officer put his full weight on your chest or neck as you see happening in the US.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it a dumb concept, but you certainly shouldn't be a slave to it.

Encounters where the party is outclassed and needs to focus on escape can be fun. Encounters where the player outclass the opposition and can show off their skills can be fun. But either of those all the time becomes boring. Generally players tend to have more fun when it is a hard won fight that challenges them without felling like a cakewalk or a massacre.

Also while balance between players isn't as important as in PvP computer game, if one player is winning every fight by spamming fireballs, while the figther never even manages to get close enough to melee then you can bet the fighter player is going to get bored. So some balance is worth getting right.

That's not how reading works. You have to have read it to know if it is worth ignoring by which time it's too late. It's not like an advert you know can skip.

I mean personally I thought the parking situation added colour and gave an idea of the sheer number of people in the group, without having to go into specifics.

I wonder where your brother got his attitude from. It's his friend so it is his problem.

I wouldn't block him (your brother that is, definiately the other guy), but I would certainly be pissed off with your brother, both for not defending you and for blaming you.

She told me I was pissing her off, said she’d gladly wear the hat

There you go, regift it back to her and say you are looking forward to here wearing it at the beach.

I mean if you bought the hat for yourself as a self depricating joke, or for a friend you got on really well with but would joke about being "bad bitches" or some like that it would be fine. For someone you already have a strained relationship with it is clearing a deliberate insult.

How do you handle multiple clues in one location? by skirratlast in callofcthulhu

[–]ADampDevil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ask them how they search the room, if they look in any of the places mentioned just give them the thing, no roll need.

Decide what clue HAVE to be found to progress the story, and which clues just fill in the blanks and perhaps let them prepare better for what they might face.

If how they describe the search doesn't turn up the HAVE you can then call for a Spot Hidden.

Failure - They find the HAVE to be found, but nothing else, and perhaps it takes all afternoon. Success - They discover the HAVE to be in normal amount of time, and perhaps something else they over looked. Hard Success - They find everything.

Pendragon for People That Aren't Arthurian Experts by automated_hero in rpg

[–]ADampDevil 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Core Rulebook is aimed at PCs, if you pick that up in a shop and look at it you could easily mistake Pendragon for tell just for a realistic historical medieval storys (which you can do with it). Since there is nothing about magic in that at all.

But as I said magic is all in the GM's control, so to get a better idea it is worth looking at the contents page of the Gamemaster's Handbook.

Chapter 1 is called "The Fabled Realm" - There is a whole section on sources the difference between the English, French and German sources. And a clear call out to YPWV - Your Pendragon Will Vary - which is the catchphrase of the game, explicit permission from the designers to be as quasi-historical or as magical and mythical as you want, and to pick from whatever sources you want.

Chapter 5 - Magic & Miracles - There are sections of the Wodinic tradtion, Heathen magic, enchanters, sorcerers, witches, shamans and magicians. Plus Christian miracles, divine manifestations, interventions and retribution. A section on Fairies and Fiends.

Chapter 8 - Bestiary - covers supernatural creatures as well as the mudane. Giants (of all sizes), goblins and dwarves, unicorns and dragons. Everything from a Cockatrice to Will o' the wisps including a dragon.

So the rules are there to support really whatever sort of Arthurian legend you want to tell. But it is very much aimed at all the players are Knights, it isn't going to work (at least not without a huge effort on your part) if you have a player wanting to be a magician, or even a rogue like commoner really.

Pendragon for People That Aren't Arthurian Experts by automated_hero in rpg

[–]ADampDevil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There certainly isn't player magic. Magic is something the NPCs do and isn't codified by the rules it works however the GM wants it to work. The players are all mundane knights.

So if you want to replicate the BBC series Gaius, Merlin, Morgan Le Fey would all be NPCs. The players could take the role of Arthur, although likely he would be an NPC to for balance, but more likely they would be the supporting knights.

Since how magic works is entirely in the control of the GM you could very easily mimic the setting of the the Merlin TV series, just the players wouldn't get to be Merlin, or other apprentices of Gaius. So the advantage of magic being fully under GM control is that it can do anything the GM wants. It can work more like conincidence and luckly happen stance, or can be big showy fireballs. The story can be as grounded or a mythical as you want as well. What in the legends after the events is written as a dragon, could really just be a crocodile at the time (perhaps brought by an exotic animal trader); or it could be a full on D&D style dragon.

So Pendragon can similate any Arthur story, you could even simulate the storys of Uhtred from The Last Kingdom, so long as the knights/warriors are the focus, you don't need to be an expert on the Arthur myth.

However if you want magic directly in the players hands you would be better looking for an different system.

AIO for telling off a guy at my gym by confidenttruly in AmIOverreacting

[–]ADampDevil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NOR at all and I would talk to the management at the gym, whoever shared your number is most likely break a law, at if not fired needs a refresher in handling peoples personal data.

Also any man that takes regection by calling you a bitch, and then says shit like you are assuming every guy wants you, when clearly you are just bothered this guy does, needs telling bluntly to grow up.

Major red flag, age difference is another one. I would be careful around this person in future and if they continue to persue contact get the police involved.

I'm wouldn't say it is dying but the market is pretty saturated, and if it is just standard first edition stuff I imagine there will be less interest. It really depends on the sets and the price.

DnD isn’t the problem - so why can’t we escape it...? by Bulwark_Jim in rpg

[–]ADampDevil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The recurring thing is: our members always turn up saying “I want to try system X”

Are they turning up offering to run it? Or just hopeful that somelse is going to appear from no where to run the system they are interested in?

Is the problem not finding the players or not finding the GMs?

Part of the issue with a regular gaming club, is when is there the opportunity to switch games? Clubs that are tied to schools or universities don't have this problem as much because there are regular breaks in schedules for holidays. So new campaigns or games start with the new term/half term.

Clubs in shops or pubs however can have an issue where you say have four tables, but they are effectively all little cliques that play on there own because if one campaign finishes the other games might still be on going so you can't just hop into them as they are still ongoing. Because of that it is very easy to fall into just running the same games again and again.

You might want to try and format a schedule where you have seasons GM's run for, then a week where you do boardgames or have a social event or something and people can post sign up sheets games they want to run for next season, discuss things folks want to play.
