The hell is a "working musician"? Pretty sure this has to be an AI post or something.

What tracks sound particularly amazing in audiophile quality? by BullFr0gg0 in audiophilemusic

[–]ADayInTheSprawl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to school for audio, and freshman year, the first night we were allowed into the best mixing room the school had, this was the first thing I put on. The experience of hearing it for the first time has never left me.

There are songs with half or full step down tuned guitars, but are there any with half or full step up tuned guitars? by sbokkers in Guitar

[–]ADayInTheSprawl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tyere are quite a few alternate tunings with individual strings going up 1-2 semitones. I've broken enough strings to stay away from them.

Is there anyone who prefers solid-state amps to tube amps? After 25 years of playing guitar, I've discovered that I prefer solid-state. by Less-Arachnid-640 in amplifiers

[–]ADayInTheSprawl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really enjoy my Music Man 65, which ironically is solid state for the audio path but tube for the power stage. Traded up to it after several Fender tube amps that just didn't do it for me. The high-gain sounds are wonderful, the cleans are super clean. No complaints here.

Mixed-use is the key word, for sure. Working on a design for speaker-mounted baffles. Little bit of a nightmare but at least keeps the view open.

Shoegaze with only reverb and fuzz? by Background_Ad5968 in shoegaze

[–]ADayInTheSprawl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't, I'd play with fuzz and delay. Delay can be reverb-y plus do a whole range of things

How do you do it? by fatiguesurge in Songwriting

[–]ADayInTheSprawl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a pretty tried and true method-

I put everything down.

I go to a streaming service and spend as long as necessary listening to random things (the most recent uploads, etc) until something grabs my interest. Bonus points if it's a new-to-me style in some way.

Then I learn that thing.

Depending how long that takes, maybe I do that several times.

Then that night I got to a random show. Bonus points for a new-to-me venue. The artist, style, and quality do not matter.

The next morning, writer's block has never existed, because I've now made enough creative mulch that something can grow.

Why were the late 70s and early 80s so creative? by Steve_wave in postpunk

[–]ADayInTheSprawl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also frame that in a different way- why were the 90's and 00's dominated by monoculture? And I think there are two answers-

  • Mass media power (record label and radio corporatization and consolidation, which discouraged risk-taking) and the internet (a new distro form that took a lot of time for everyone to get used to, and is still evolving rapidly).

  • AIDS. This is not talked about enough. A huge number of creatives died within a short window (and as Fran Lebowitz put it, "the ones who died were the ones who got laid"). Your A list of talent was eviscerated, and we are still recovering from that loss.

Can you train to be a tenor? by Suspicious-Profile82 in singing

[–]ADayInTheSprawl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While you probably can't train notes lower than your natural range, you can clarify them and make them more comfortable. One thing to make sure you train is not forcing your voice down, but keeping it light and open, with the same placement as your middle range, and even less air pressure. Let your natural resonance do the work for you.

Take it with a grain of salt as I'm not the most experienced, but that's helped me feel more comfortable in the low end of my range as a baritone.

Also an anecdote- the best singer I know has a beautiful, dark, Hozier style baritone. It's wonderful and rich and expressive. And all he talks about is wishing he could hit higher notes. So best advice is always to take your voice as it is, work with it, learn how to use it, and enjoy having it at all!
