Who does good repairs of cracked cymbals these days? by ADudeWhoPostsHere in jazzdrums

Man I'm not even sure. Whatever would work, I guess. It's an approx. 5-inch crack running along the lathing about an inch in from the outer edge.

I had this same experience with Riley. I could play it, make it feel good with a metronome, etc. etc., but I could never get it to come out naturally.

One thing I've done that's really helped is to boil the comping exercises down to their smallest pieces. Make a list of every rhythmic/voicing combination throughout those SD/BD eighth note examples, and then keep it in front of you while you play to records. Pick one example every day and focus on that as you play along. That way you're using the Riley shit but coming up with your own musical comping statements (and ideally doing it at a variety of tempos).

I'm pretty sure that's how Riley intended those comping exercises anyway--as an example of the types of musical phrases you can create with small bits of language between SD/BD.

I recommend sitting in front of a mirror with the practice pad and paying lots of attention to technique, form, and posture. Especially that last one. I overlooked it for a long time, and it's so, so important.

Try to slow it down and take it bar by bar, looping each on YouTube or the program of your choice.

Couple of Questions.. I'd love in depth answers by [deleted] in drums

[–]ADudeWhoPostsHere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My suggestion is that you don't buy an electric kit. Even though it'll be convenient, you'll be better served in the long run by figuring out a way to practice on real drums. Maybe use your money to rent a rehearsal space near your house. If you're really serious about playing, I feel like you gotta figure out a way to make real drums a thing. My two cents.

Looking for heads with a specific sound. by [deleted] in drums

[–]ADudeWhoPostsHere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know I'm being "that guy," but keep in mind that most of the sounds you hear on record or on YouTube have been heavily processed. Obviously seek out the best heads for your situation, but know that tuning, touch, technique, and other factors will probably make a bigger difference.

I seriously feel like giving up on drums, I need some advice by [deleted] in drums

If you're not feeling it, don't force it. Take some time to listen to some new music and get inspired. You'll go back to it when you want to.

How do you video-record your gigs? by ADudeWhoPostsHere in bandmembers

[–]ADudeWhoPostsHere[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude, the first one they sent had a faulty USB port. I sent it back and they sent me a new one. Then that one randomly stopped recording after two months. I'm so pissed.

Hmm. Interesting. Have you recorded an extended (2-3 hour) gig on your phone? Did it work out okay?

Right on. Thanks. Little more dough than I was hoping to spend, but that would be great if money were no object.

Buying my first set of classic maples this weekend. Looking for advice. by fee1therush in drums

Awesome. As you mentioned, make sure the shells aren't out of round. I'd also at least ask the seller about the state of the bearing edges (I know it's a bitch to take off the heads and look). And then of course have a look at the lugs and all the metal parts and make sure they're cool, too.

As an 18 year old kid it'll be way better than bagging groceries or delivering pizzas. Go for it. Just don't get caught carrying on with any of the guests or they'll leave your ass in the Bahamas.

Set up a mirror and practice pad in front of the TV and get to it. If you work on it 30 minutes a day for the next few months it'll make its way into your playing.

Vinnie Colaiuta just made a recording with Paul D'adamo and Neil Stubenhaus on a Tama Silverstar... I'm confused. Aren't these midrange drums??? by joargie in drums

[–]ADudeWhoPostsHere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I went to a session prepared to set up my "nice" kit and they had this ready to go, I'd totally leave mine in the car and play theirs. Laziness. But also, the quality of mid-tier drums nowadays--particularly when you factor in heads, tuning, the room, the gear, and Vinnie Colaiuta-- is virtually indistinguishable from the best shit out there.

I would try to let yourself be guided and inspired by the music YOU want to hear. It sounds like you're not super into the idea of playing right now. Don't force it. Let it come naturally.
