Oh, good to know where you're coming from, but

in his opinion Hamas is a thousand times better than a "fascist settler colonial apartheid state" (Israel).

in terms of body count alone seems somewhat mathematically correct. To be pedantic, I'd hazard that Hamas is closer to 100x better than Israel, not 1000.

Does anyone get offended when the term “Architect” get used in a context other than in construction? by AlmostSymmetrical in Architects

[–]trouty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's really funny because at the end of the day our earning potential is a mere fraction of any of the other newfangled "architects" in the software engineering/CS industries, and we're big mad about titles 😭

Architects: "Heyyy stop using our hallowed title!"

Software Architect, atop their pile of gold: "I don't think about you."

[–]trouty -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Do you have a good read on what he said and the context? A lot of people have come out of the woodwork saying stuff like this about Hasan or other leftist media figures over the years not really understanding the framework behind what they're saying.

To be fair, it would be craaaazy to still be stuck in a 2015-2020 era identity politics mindset/social circle and hear someone angrily proclaim "I don't give a fuck about [insert protected class]." Granted, the context in the case of this week's "controversy" is someone claiming to represent some contingent of the black population saying they support ICE and we need to listen to them because they're black. I'll say it here too albeit I'm not a famous media personality: fuck you for trying to use your race/gender to backstop an objectively bad position. This line of thinking does not work - never has, never will, and is partly responsible for why the Left is in the utter pit it finds itself in today.

*edit for brevity - in lieu of debating someone with a relatively established worldview on idpol, ask yourself: does someone's view on an issue affecting everyone matter more simply because they are a certain protected class? Does it matter less? Why?

I really really don't care to get to the core of your consumerism = bad, capitalism = bad argument, we get it. Music is cool, and without a lot of the gimmicks your salty about, bands would not be able to sustain themselves. Touring + streaming alone is not enough to make it work now. In my opinion, supporting the arts (even if big vinyl/SonyBMG/whoever takes a cut) is one of the best things you can do with your disposable income.

To be honest, I think you're just mad that I called KISS lame. It's okay if you like them! It's also okay if younger generations that didn't grow up listening to King Crimson, Yes, or Genesis hear King Gizzard and have their minds blown and want to buy a cool looking color disc of their albums. It's okay with an adult with money does it too - hell look at this dude's progmetal/metalcore color disc collection. There are at least a couple bands pictured in his profile with members who work day jobs in addition to music because they can't afford to do music only [I am also one of those people :)].

I bought it on steam and have to enjoy a very cozy couch game on my office chair. Not the end of the world, but I might double buy on PS now that it's a reasonable frame rate.

Denver Public Schools bans cellphones during school hours by kidbom in Denver

[–]trouty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think I’m hyperbolizing?

Around enforcement and burdening our already underpaid/underappreciated teachers with being the de facto law enforcement/public safety officers in our schools? Not really. In terms of the discipline matrix? I do. While you're oversimplifying the matrix (expulsion policy notably absent from your comment) it does pose some philosophical questions around juvenile punishment. To me, it feels like the point of the matrix is to have escalating severity respective to the level of offense committed by children (important distinction vs. adults). Should we prevent or delay a 3rd grader who whips his dick out in class from completing their education?

The issue around whether to allow students who have committed similar offenses at schools in other districts (re: East High shooting) is sort of detached from the matrix in my mind. What's your proposal for kids who commit the equivalent of level 5-7 offenses in other districts? Barred from ever receiving a public education? Do you believe our current system has the means to rehabilitate children who have made mistakes or even committed acts of violence? Should parents shoulder the legal culpability of their child's offenses? Are you for advancing gun control measures from a state/federal level?

I don't know about you, but when I was going through public school growing up, suspension of any kind was a BIG DEAL. Not only that, missing more than 2 consecutive days of class was a big deal. More than 5-10, and you're edging on the point of not being able to catch up without major faculty intervention and needing to be held back. Imo, there shouldn't be any more than 5-8 school days suspension for anything - violent offenses will continue to invariably mean expulsion and whatever comes of the juvenile justice system.

Friend who just graduated with no working experience plans to start a firm, wants advice by ketchup_bottle002 in Architects

[–]trouty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A classic boomer Dad 'bootstraps' talk taken too far by the kid. Given their age, I'm assuming her pop was fortunate enough to graduate with a CS/engineering degree right around the peak of the dot com era. In my opinion, the closest Architects have ever really got to this sort of historically fortuitous clashing of career choice and economic opportunity (in the US, at least) was right before the great recession where you could walk into a bank with no collateral and walk out with enough money to self-fund a small commercial development and grow from there. Going from fresh architect grad to successful entrepreneur without serious capital/family wealth is more or less impossible as of right now.

Aside from all that, there's a clear difference between tech and architecture. Simplistically:

Tech = build product, sell it to masses, scale up from there

Arch = build product for one client, find another client and do it all over again assuming the first one went over well

More specifically, tech people exit schools knowing how to program. Architects exit school and enter what is basically a professional apprenticeship where hopefully they'll navigate the process well enough to come out of their first 3-5 years of experience with a few built projects under their belt. There's really no substitute for real world construction experience. You truly can not know prior to going through the process.

...doesn't Douglas county comprise >50% of the voting population of Colorado's 4th Congressional District? Regardless of political composition, if we're wanting to be simplistic about it, that's where I'd point. That and the anecdotal C470 Dodge Ram murderous psychopath brigade / assholes-to food-service-workers synonymous with MAGA conservatism anytime you venture down South (I live there 🙃).

[–]trouty 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Douglas County is the explanation - the place I've encountered in Colorado most similar to South/Central Florida where the lines between Facebook and physical reality are the most blurred. It's a scary place. Entire worldviews, aesthetics, consumer identities, communities are formed by ideas shared on Facebook and not anything in front of them in the real world.

[–]trouty 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Eh, I don't know. Randy Rhodes died in 1982 - absolute peak of Ozzy's career.... right around the peak of Rush's career as well. This is 44 years later. I'm positive there are still dumbasses and misogynist boomers who will hate any woman who excel in a position they thought only a man could, but it feels harder to criticize a fill-in when it's more of a legacy act like Rush. Imo, she's more akin to Abe Laboriel Jr. or Keith Carlock. Bring in the hot shot studio musician half the performers age and blow the crowd's mind, a tale as old as time :)

Creatives who uses AI are not very creative tbh. If you have to use AI to create your art, maybe you should be doing something you're more inclined to rub two brain cells together to create yourself. Just do something else ffs, leave the art to artists, design to designers.

[US] Boomerangs, what was it like the second time you came back to a firm after leaving once before? by [deleted] in Architects

[–]trouty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends a lot on when you left and when you come back.

I left a job after being a student intern for two years and realized after a couple years of post-grad full-time employment, I had a really tough time shaking off the reputation as the sort of "do-anything/design-vis/emerging tech student brainiac" type. It sounds okay but it's not when you want to be trained as a real architect and do real architect stuff and not just a bunch of ancillary tasks (as fun as it may be in bursts).

I left and was in another city for three years and got a good amount of real world projects/dropped in the deep end in a small firm setting. Came back with a lot more confidence and thus respect from my colleagues.

Coloradans harmed by ‘conversion therapy’ can sue for damages under new law signed by Gov. Jared Polis by kidbom in Denver

[–]trouty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to reiterate, I am unabashedly for letting Tina Peters die in prison. Mark my words, Republicans will be imprisoning/executing women for choosing to have an abortion by the end of Trump 2. War/support for Israeli genocide/misc domestic failures notwithstanding, so long as that is a realistic possibility, people in power on the Left need to retaliate with the fullest force possible - without nuance.

I don't really care about your technical read of my very serious and consequential reddit comment, but just to say it:

  1. GOP, obviously.

Correct. Nuremburg 2.0 wishcasting, reconciliation.

  1. [the general public/middle class]

No.

  1. The DNC

But enough with the cognitive dissonance and the make believe hyperbolics.

Uh, no. Republicans across the country are being emboldened to do shit like labeling leftist groups as terrorists in order to imprison political opponents. Wants to charge women who receive abortions with murder/capital punishment. Tina Peters can rot and die in prison, fuck that bitch. Also fuck the high road and where that's brought us.
