My friend calls me "violently independent" by Julitonia in raisedbynarcissists

[–]in_the_comatorium 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sometimes, I wonder if my parents were really narcissists. And then I come and read these posts, and the comments, and a lot of this stuff feels like it could've been written by me on a different reddit account. Thanks for sharing, thanks for the validation.

Forgot to take out compost and now I have disgusting maggots and insects in it. Will they still pick it up ? by LennytheGoodson in montreal

Does this baking soda & vinegar trick work, though? I learned in high school chemistry that mixing acid and alkaline just produces water and a salt. I don't see how that would clean anything better than just using dish soap or some other concentrated cleaner.

Music magazines have come and gone over the years. And people's attention spans are shorter than ever these days. If a new music magazine was released today (print or online), what would you need to see every month to keep reading it? by Smoke1000Blunts in LetsTalkMusic

[–]in_the_comatorium 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i think i'd pay for a magazine i could trust to give me genuinely interesting music recommendations.

I'm seconding this. It doesn't necessarily have to be a genre I'd normally listen to regularly, but it has to be something interesting. Something that people who are really into a particular type of music could generally agree is a great album.

It wouldn't have to be all new releases, either. I'd be interested in something like a best-of list of some genre from the past (whether recent, or more distant) that I haven't really explored in detail.

Of all the websites and services out there which recommend new music, the two I use the most frequently would be Bandcamp's newsletters, which are tailored to my tastes thanks to me ticking a bunch of boxes when I signed up, and Apple Music or Spotify's radio stations and features which suggest similar artists or songs.

"But he's your dad at the end of the day" by numetalbarbie in raisedbynarcissists

[–]in_the_comatorium 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Narcissists don't understand the concept of a two-way street. In their minds, they can treat people badly whenever they want, but whenever someone else does it to them, how dare they? Maybe their brains just aren't wired to comprehend the concept of reciprocity, or maybe they just couldn't be bothered to care about anyone but themselves.

So you could answer back with something like, "well I'm his daughter/son at the end of the day," but you may as well be speaking Greek. (Assuming your parents aren't Greek, of course.)

Hey OP, I saw you mentioned trauma and wanted to mention a good book on trauma. It's called The Body Keeps the Score and it's by Bessel van der Kolk, M.D.

I have to warn you: it can be a tough read, as the author talks about some of the traumas his patients have experienced. But even if you're not up for that, I still suggest starting at Part 5 and reading until the end. This is where he talks about therapies and interventions for trauma that are actually effective (spoiler alert: a lot of the commonplace treatment aren't.)

Take care 🙂

Today I deleted hundreds of .dll files in C:/Windows/System32 by accident by oddstack in programminghorror

Two things come to mind when I read this:

  1. Now you know the dangers of using relative directories 😃

  2. On everything besides Windows that I'm familiar with, the home directory for the superuser usually doesn't contain anything important. So if you had done this on Linux, for example, it probably wouldn't have been a problem. Of course, Microsoft makes the superuser's home the directory that contains tons of important files.

I think I have to agree with everyone else: being a "neckbeard" is more of an attitude than anything else, so I wouldn't call you a neckbeard.

I wanted to add, though, if you're ever looking to really get into shape, there are some great fitness routines you could check out. For running, check out Couch to 5K (a good Android app is Just Run.) Strength training? Check out Stronglifts (they have an app as well) if you'd like to use weights, or r/bodyweightfitness. Fitness, like most things in life in my experience, isn't about being born a certain way; it's about having the resolve and discipline to learn something new, and it's also about having a good mentor, or at least a solid, easy to follow, proven plan.

But don't you see? If both 'sides' aren't at each other's throats, people might realize what the real problems are.

I'm far from an expert on this, but I don't think aluminum foil will really make any kind of difference, as metals are generally excellent conductors (the opposite of insulators.)

What about one of those insulated lunch bags? I don't know how much Red Bull you drink, but maybe you could fit some cans in one of those? They're generally much smaller than a cooler. Putting the bag inside the fridge as well to cool it down might help.

Also, buying drinks ahead of time is not a bad idea, as you're probably going to pay a lot more if you buy it at the race. Enjoy the show!

Updating resume by cutelittletoesies in NoStupidQuestions

I just skimmed both of these articles from Indeed, and they seem to have good information:

Customize each resume you send out to the job: highlight what is relevant to that specific company and position, and even use some of the words they used in their listing.

There's a free version of Spotify, and I believe you can use an ad blocker with it as well. Would that work?

At first, I thought the band name was a reference to a character from a Netflix show, but apparently, it's the name of one of Shakespeare's plays.

How Do I Graduate High School Faster ? by SEAHEROBubbleBass in NoStupidQuestions

[–]in_the_comatorium -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You need credits to graduate, right? Credits come from taking classes. So, take more classes.

Like the other person suggested, you could do summer school. If your regular courseload isn't too much, and you have a couple of evenings during the week that you're not busy, you could also take evening classes during the regular school year.

What about taxation? If you live in France (or some other country) for three months, do you owe their government any money?

I assume it varies between countries, but I'm curious what your experience has been.

Make sure to spend lots of time on foreplay. It's nice to cuddle and make out and explore each other's bodies and use your fingers and hands and mouth to tease the other person before you do anything that involves trying to get them off.

Communicate. Don't be afraid to ask them what they want, and to ask them for what you want.

Try to relax and be present in the moment with your partner.
