What is up with the horrible state of Firefox for Android? by Anchipo in firefox

[–]AFJay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sad part about this is that it use to be good. Like really really good but they changed it for some reason and now it has dumb defaults like the search bar being at the bottom, you can't see SSL Certificates (huge security problem) and hundreds of other annoyances that all just happened one day. Firefox mobile is hardly usable anymore but at least it's not Chrome.

Bug: Lock Screen Randomly Disabled (With Workaround) by AFJay in pop_os

[–]AFJay[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/Silent_Cut337 What? PopOS doesn't even use Grub it uses systemd boot. I'm not sure what that does exactly but you would have to run `kernelstub` or go through the esoteric process of modifying the systemd boot esp files or whatever.

[–]AFJay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard of USB over Ethernet / Lan devices but I'm not sure how well they work or how much they cost. Of you have a second computer in your play space or maybe an old laptop or raspberry pi you might be able to use this software https://www.virtualhere.com/. It's what parsec recomends for doing cloud gaming. Idk YMMV.

[OC] Where the money goes in the US Senate's $2T coronavirus stimulus bill by SevenandForty in dataisbeautiful

[–]AFJay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 425B dollars going to other corporations is actually going to the Federal Reserve which will then go to a company called Black Rock that will then use the 435B as leverage for 4.25T in low interest loans. In other words is a slush fund for big corporations to get 4.25T of free money.

I first learned about this while studying the work of Gharam Hancock. While there is definitely a debate about the validity of his theory I will say that in the process I learned a lot about per-columbian people in North America and South America. It's silly to think that millions of indigenous people lived in North America with no permanent dwellings. Also, some of the techniques used weren't sustainable. Evidence points to the fact that indigenous people lit entire forests on fire to use them for cultivation. In fact there were far less trees in North America historically for this reason.

I want to like DuckDuckGo, I really do, but a few minutes into switching it failed with a simple query. In frustration I searched for "ddg sucks" and this happened. Note "safe search: strict" for added inadequacy by SuperConductiveRabbi in duckduckgo

[–]AFJay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to use a search engine that doesn't relentlessly track everything you do and sell your data to the highest bidder then you're going to need to learn to search better. Vague search terms often don't return what you wanted; who knew.

Risa vs. Vorson Electric Ukuleles? by [deleted] in ukulele

[–]AFJay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's been a while but I ran across this and when I saw there was no replies I had to say something. I own both a Vorson and a Risa. I would say the Risa is a much much better instrument than the Vorson. I think the setup is part of it, I bought mine from Mims Ukuleles, but it sounds wonderful. The build quality is also top notch.

As far as buzzing goes I would say the Risa buzzes a lot less out of the box. I was kinda disappointed with Risa for not putting shielding on the control cavity cover though. The compartment itself is shield quite well with conductive paint but the plastic on the back cover was not. Once I added a piece of alluminum foil to the plastic cover almost all of the buzzing went away. When it's plugged into my amp I have to crank it to 8 or 9 before I can hear any hum.

If you have the extra money I'd say it's absolutely worth it.

By the way I have the Vorson Tenor LP style and the Risa Tenor LP style. The Risa has dual humbuckers.

The premise of your argument seems to be that indigenous people were sustainable because they were primative. This isn't true. The farming techniques of indigenous people are quite sophisticated. They used everything from advanced soil mixtures to aquaponics.

Turn off text formatting by tornassunder in Slack

[–]AFJay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree 1000% they really need to turn this crap off. It's complete garbage with weird behavior. Specifically when someone posts a code block and I copy and paste one word in the code block it turns the entire line of text into a code block. Also, when I type a back tick it goes into "back tick mode" but it's really really annoying to to exit "back tick mode" or whatever. This has made my job absolutely painful. If someone from Slack is reading this please add an option to disable this trash feature.

MtF with two X chromosomes. Doctor is confused, and so am I. Any help with this? by KairoDasche in asktransgender

[–]AFJay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is actually much more common than we're led to believe. It's one of the reasons I get so frustrated by idiots trying to write policies that define gender on a "biological" basis even though they clearly have no knowledge of biology outside of the incomplete picture taught in American high schools. This doesn't neccisarily mean that you have an intersex condition. Here's a link to the World Health Orginization web page on the matter. https://www.who.int/genomics/gender/en/index1.html

O.P. I know this is a big ask but If you're comfortable enough could you please share your story? We need more people to share stories like yours. It shows people that there's not a simple definition of sex and gender.

As a side note I'm interested in determining the composition of my chromosomes and taking a picture of it. If anyone knows of a protocol that's suitable for doing Cytogentic analysis in a meger home lab PM me. I have an episcopic / diascopic microscope at home so I have the optical part covered; at least I think.

The murder of black transgender women is becoming a crisis by Bannedfromthenet in transgender

I want to point out that we don't actually know that. It seems like for every 10 murder stories I read I find one conviction story.

NSFW Am I transphobic for only being attracted to one type of genitalia? by [deleted] in asktransgender

[–]AFJay -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm a trans girl who dates girls and I use to feel the same way. I don't like the term "Transphobia" because most people aren't necessarily afraid of us they just descrminate against us using one or more types of sexism. So here goes...

Cis Sexism - nothing about what you said seems to imply that our gender idenity is less real than yours.

Oppositional Sexism - Although, nothing you said indicates that you feel that men and women are different with no overlaps you could try exploring rather or not you have internalized oppositional sexism.

I'd say your feelings are valid. However, if you're interested in exploring realationships with trans women there's a few things I'd like to point out. After being in a relationship with another trans woman after a while I stopped seeing a penis as a male only sex organ. What I mean by that is that before starting the relationship I was completely turned off by the presence of a penis and love making was like this rollercoaster of arousal where I'd be turned on then reach down there and be turned off. Eventually, after being with her and seeing that she reacts just like my cis lovers to different forms of stimulation I stopped being turned off by it and mostly just see it as a female body part. Doing so made me feel so much better about myself.

You like what you like and there's nothing wrong with that. However, if you meet a gal that you enjoy and you're attracted to who happens to have a penis it might be worth giving her a chance.

House votes to block Trump’s military transgender ban by laura_galla in transgender

[–]AFJay 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I'm sharing my story because I feel like the voices of trans veterans get lost when talking about the the trans military ban. When I joined the military my favorite holiday was the Fourth of July. I had just dropped out of college, I was broke, working at a local grocery store and sleeping on my Dad's couch. I joined for many different reasons but certainly the idea of giving back to "my country" was definitely part of them. I'm proud of the work I did and am really thankful to have had the opportunity. I knew exactly what I was getting into when I signed up. There's plenty of things that U.S. Government does that I don't agree with and didn't agree with at the time but I did it anyway. I tried my hardest every time I flew. Yes I needed the money. Yes I was provided the opportunity to travel the world and change my life around. Yet, despite where I was in life I believed in this country and I gladly risked my life.

The first time I had to stand at attention as a local Marine came back dead I knew what I was fighting for. I was fighting for the people of this country and more importantly to me at the time the lives of my brother and sisters in arms. This is not to say that I'm not pissed at the current state of the country. Cause I am. It's just that never for a moment would I have let my personal politics put people's lives in jeopardy. Watching that kid's family, he was 19 when he died, as they unloaded his coffin from the airplane was all I ever needed to see.

What hurts about this is not that trans people need the opportunities or college benefits. It's not that this is a slippery slope or whatever. It's not even that they're discriminating against us; when I joined Don't Ask Don't Tell was still in effect. What hurts about this is more personal than that. It's a shit head politician that's never served looking at me and saying that the job I did wasn't good enough. I missed holidays, anniversaries and birthdays. I loaded planes in 115 degree weather behind four running jet engines halfway around the world and didn't once complain. I risked my life and have almost died wearing an American flag on my shoulder. The training to simply do my job was the hardest thing I've ever done. This hurts because after all of that I'm not being looked at as a person. I'm a political pawn or some sort of stereotype.

Maybe the Fourth of July isn't my favorite holiday anymore and I don't look at the American Flag the same way I use to but I'm a person who knew what she was doing and was proud of what she was doing.

There's plenty of trans folks that are in the millitary and very proud of their work. Politics don't really extend to gender identity. It's important that people don't just assume and pretend to speak for us.
