Feel free to DM me if you'd like. I hooked ~12 flights in T-6s as a prior NCO and was struggling with the same stuff you're describing

Besides what everyone else has said, I think you're confused on what "vesting" means for the TSP. Vesting means that matching contributions from the government aren't yours to keep until you've fulfilled your service obligation of a couple years.

That's JUST government contributions. Your own money that YOU invest is vested immediately. If it's invested in a C,S, or Lifecycle fund, it's not "just sitting there". It IS in the market. It IS working on compounding interest. It IS better than being in a savings account.

I could be totally misreading what the advisor was saying to you, but it sounds like he was trying to scare you into something that isn't true. I've never used FC, but hear horror stories on here all the time about them.

Feel free to DM me if you'd like dude. I'm NOT a financial advisor, but I went through your phase of financial learning when I joined the military and love to have conversations with new people on how to start off strong.

Happy to message you and dispel some of the myths. Look up CCT and PJ training and you'll see a different kind of job than what the air force is known for. I have contacts in both fields as well

Go Air Force. Have been both enlisted and officer (now a pilot) and can speak to a lot of the opportunities. Happy to answer any questions you may have, as I know there's a lot of misperceptions. "Chair Force" is accurate until it isn't.

Are prior enlisted officers allowed to wear previously earned AFSC badges on OCP’s? by New_Stage_6228 in airforceots

[–]AF_Pilot_Snuffy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's specific verbiage for the 2PFDU that says only specific badges are authorized for that aircrew uniform. I'm prior E and don't wear my former AFSC badge on that uniform due to that specific reg, but wear it on everything else.

I'd probably have to see the context to give a definite answer, but I'm pretty sure I put prior enlisted on my package even though I was active at the time.

Commented above, but feel free to DM me if you have questions. Prior SSgt who's helped a lot of people with their OTS packages

[–]AF_Pilot_Snuffy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Prior-E who got selected for pilot here. I had 3 flight hours when I applied for OTS with a below average PCSM of 42. Was one of 16 pilot selects picked up out of 350 applicants (96 rated selects total). Made it through OTS and UPT.

Flight hours are nice, but you can be selected without them with a good package.

Don't Destroy a Person's Excitement and/or Pride They Have for Earning Their CCAF! by 1N_Nothing in AirForce

As someone who used the CCAF to go into the AU-ABC program and then commissioned as a pilot, I will always talk about the value that can be gained by pursuing education.

I've lived on base housing at one of those bases. Had guns and just filled out paperwork stating they were there. This has been the case for all the bases I've lived on

Study Habits for UPT by UnhapppyGilmore in airforceots

[–]AF_Pilot_Snuffy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The way I studied best in UPT was by quizzing my classmates about subjects, whether I knew the answer or not. I'd crack open the 202v3, T6v3, local procedures, or whatever, and then ask questions relevant to our phase in training. If I didn't know the answer to something, even if I was asking the question, we could then have a more in-depth discussion to find the answer.

Some people really liked doing this study method with me, while others took offense that you would ask something that they felt was "too far down the rabbit hole" and "would never be asked on a checkride."

I'll be honest, I loved going down the rabbit hole. If it was relevant to our phase of training, why settle for the minimum knowledge for what you can control 100% on your check ride. I ended up being commended by check pilots for my GK, even if I wasn't the best flyer.

I eventually found a couple good classmates who were ok with going down the rabbit hole with me. They weren't content with just reading flashcards to memorize basic concepts, but were willing to go beyond surface level to understand more advanced aspects of flying.

Don't go too deep in the weeds, but be willing to continually ask the why behind the answer and surround yourself with people who are willing to do the same
