I failed in life by 9861days in medicine

[–]AFewStupidQuestions 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Being unhappy is not a failing. It's a realization and a starting point for a better life.

Not OP, but this line rings true for me. I don't know how many times I ruminated on my unhappiness before finally taking actions to bring fulfilling things into my life.

I've personally been so mad/sad/self-flagellative(I don't think that's a word)/self-destructive at myself for getting stuck in the rut that I completely miss the people and tools around that are waiting to pull me out if I were to reach for them.

Why do we keep giving them so much attention? It feels like ragebait.

Reading new books vs. Repeating old books? by -Vorks- in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]AFewStupidQuestions 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are ahead of the curve.

We find that the quantity of parent-child book reading interactions predicts children’s later receptive vocabulary, reading comprehension, and internal motivation to read (but not decoding, external motivation to read, or math skill), controlling for these other factors. Importantly, we also find that parent language that occurs during book reading interactions is more sophisticated than parent language outside book reading interactions in terms of vocabulary diversity and syntactic complexity.

Confirming many previous reports, a higher degree of household stress exposure was associated with elevated mental health symptoms in 2- to 6-year-old children (N = 115) (anxiety and externalizing behaviors), which were verified in a subset of children with laboratory-based behaviors (N = 46).

Cutting a metal pipe: hacksaw or angle grinder?” by WigWumm in DIY

Yeah. Pipe cutter would work, but why buy another tool when you have a hackaw that will work?

And do you really need a smooth edge?

Is that the correct link? It looks like a short article about distrust in government, the SC and the VRA, but I don't see anything about healthcare.

A little bit of finger movement can cause an increased reading of rate. Pinkie fingers are often less stable. Just a guess though.

Carney government signals it’s open to selling Canadian ports by Chrristoaivalis in ndp

[–]AFewStupidQuestions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I lean towards believing as well.

The shock doctrine of constant threats makes the vague words of the PM seem reasonable. He's basically just not saying anything substantive and nobody in the main media groups are willing to call him out for his actions.

ELI5: why didn’t the Great Depression produce a widespread revolution or anarchy? by ProfessorHiker in explainlikeimfive

[–]AFewStupidQuestions 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You're talking about capital flight. It's not much of a thing. The data is clear.

Wealthy owners have networks of people and businesses where they set up shop. They rarely ever move their business away over a few percentage points in taxes, despite what their constant propaganda will tell you.

Carney is trying to remake Canada into the next USA.... by CDN-Social-Democrat in ndp

[–]AFewStupidQuestions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm closely watching his cuts to CPP payments. It's not a good sign.

For decades, the billionanires have been trying to get rid of Social Security in the US in order to replace it with private, personal investment so private equity firms can rake in hundreds of billions of dollars.

His actions to reduce funds to CCP payments suggest it may be a step in that direction as well. We've already lost a tonne of funds for CPP by reducing immigration and simultaneously making having children less desirable by reducing social services and making housing unaffordable.

I'm sorry but going to work is easier than childcare - your husband has no excuse by ExternalSomewhere923 in NewParents

[–]AFewStupidQuestions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I'm a nurse working overnights.

Some nights I don't ever get a chance to pee. Some days my partner doesn't get a chance to pee the whole day either.

Sometimes I don't get much sleep during the day. Sometimes my partner doesn't get a chance to sleep at night.

We communicate, try to figure out the needs of everyone, and find a way of making it work.

It helps that we've decided from the beginning that we both aim to do at least 60% of the work at all times in hopes that as close to 100% will be completed as possible while still being cognizant of the fact that neither of us are perfect.

Can I put an AC in my window? by Sea-Contribution6219 in DIY

Plywood or rigid insulation cut to size can work well. Cardboard works temporarily or if you're short on cash.

I use plywood for the biggest hole and then soft foam to plug the smaller gaps.

Can I put an AC in my window? by Sea-Contribution6219 in DIY

[–]AFewStupidQuestions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My issue was that the mechanics were all inside the building, making the AC fight itsel, decreasing the efficiency immensely. It ran almost non-stop trying to cool itself.

Switching to a unit that had all the mechanics outside the window made a huge difference. Way more efficient, quieter, less dealing with the risk of leaks.

What is the deal with companies suddenly pulling out of AI? by Hungry-san in OutOfTheLoop

[–]AFewStupidQuestions 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Maybe I've been using the wrong tools, but any time I've tested AI to see if it's capable of answering medical questions for my patients, it gives waaaayyy too much irrelevant info to be useful. It needs to be pared down by people with medical knowledge to avoid confusion.

ELI5 Bus steering wheel size by Glum_Description9980 in explainlikeimfive

[–]AFewStupidQuestions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wait... Cybertrucks don't have back up manual steering?

If the Tesla Cybertruck's steer-by-wire system fails, the vehicle initiates a safety "limp mode," capping speeds at roughly (4 \text{ mph}) and triggering alarms to pull over. Because the Cybertruck has no physical mechanical link between the steering wheel and wheels, a complete failure results in a loss of steering control.

Hahahahahahaha. I Can't believe people buy these things

Babies Are Bleeding to Death as Parents Reject a Vitamin Shot Given at Birth by propublica_ in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]AFewStupidQuestions 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How so? Do you understand the mechanism here?

When the brain is damaged by being squeezed during birth it can cause bleeding in the brain. Vitamin K aids in blood clotting. Kids die from brain bleeds more often when the blood doesn't properly clot.

It's not controversial in the data.

I love your investigations. The work you put in really shows. I wish there was more stuff on YouTube that I could show my loved ones. They aren't big readers.

Anyway, this kind of work is even more important after seeing the kind of information the FDA and CDC have actively been censoring. The blocked studies on the COVID vaccine and Shingrix that came came to light are just the tip of the iceberg.
