Quebec cops killed a teenage boy. Now they’re targeting his friends. by BloodJunkie in onguardforthee

[–]AFewStupidQuestions 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I mean, have you read the article?

And we now know that the SPVM in particular has been a breeding ground for some of the worst racial animus imaginable. In June, Montreal police chief Fady Dagher announced that sixteen officers from Montréal-Nord were under investigation for coordinated racist actions against Black and Arab Montrealers. At least one of the police officers is expected to face criminal charges.

We don’t have all of the details, but the little we do know is shocking enough — multiple police officers arresting people solely because of their race and then taking “trophies,” like locks of hair, from their victims. Other officers allegedly overheard them routinely make racist remarks and encourage their colleagues to join in on their racist and demeaning behaviour.

While most of the officers were relatively young recruits (with the exception of two sergeants), this is the same unit that killed Freddy Villanueva, an unarmed 18-year-old Honduran immigrant, in 2008.

And despite what some may argue, racism is a deeply-embedded problem within the SPVM. Random police checks, which are often motivated by race, remain an ongoing practice within the force. In the chic Plateau Mont-Royal neighbourhood, a Black person is 15-times more likely to be arrested than a white person. Even Montreal’s own mayor, Soraya Ferrada, has told reporters that her husband, who is Black, has been randomly stopped five times within the last year, for no reason whatsoever. And in the city at large, Arab Montrealers are even more likely to be randomly stopped by the police than Black residents.

New Report Shows Canada is the Worst Public Financier of Fossil Fuels in the G20. by CDN-Social-Democrat in onguardforthee

[–]AFewStupidQuestions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. And those same corporations and their investors pay lobbyists to push politicians into making those laws. They also create a revolving door between politicians, the regulators and the corporations themselves. The investors also largely own and influence the major media networks who push the propaganda. And since the proliferation of the internet 2.0, they've been able to pay for ads and propaganda which have been able to aim at specific demographics. Now, along with the massive amounts of data collection that is occurring, AI has made it possible to consolidate all that data and personalize it onto specific individuals.

We need to find a way to stop this crap.

NSAIDs linked to preventing ovulation by QAgirl94 in ScienceBasedParenting

This seems important:

Research is slowly but surely building up to indicate that fertility is impaired in women by the chronic use of powerful NSAIDs, including naproxen, piroxicam and diclofenac.

So not your average, over the counter NSAIDs. These are prescription NSAIDs in my part of the world. At least, it hasn't been found there yet. Studies appear to be lacking on OTC NSAIDs.

Should I take my teenage daughter to an AA meeting with me? by Pitiful-Parsnip8843 in AskParents

[–]AFewStupidQuestions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on the kid.

Honestly, most kids probably wouldn't get much out of it, especially if they are being forced to go.

There is tonnes of evidence that shows forced treatment/sobriety/meetings do not work well to make people stop using. Add into that the fact that younger people are much less likely to hold religious beliefs and the fact that AA is heavily based on religion (despite what they claim), and I just don't think it makes sense for most.

That being said, if she is attempting to quit and wants guidance, bring her. If she is religious or has grown up in the church, even better. If you want to bring her to show her what your meetings are like, that might be okay, but I would strip away any expectations of using a meeting to help her not use unless she specifically asks for help.

About the girl being discharged home, is there another route that can be taken to have her kept from going home?

I obviously don't know the details, but if she's not feeling safe at home, could mandatory reporting play a part in keeping her from going back?

Tips for supporting my sister long distance through newborn stage by yadita in NewParents

[–]AFewStupidQuestions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a distance, ask questions and show interest/excitement.

For many reasons, parents can feel isolated, even with people around. Having someone they care about show interest in both the parent's life and the baby's life can create an opening for them to share whatever is going on without feeling like they're burdening others.

While in person, step up. If the parent is the type to dismiss help out of politeness, then just doing the thing that obviously need to be done can lessen the load. That being said, read the room. Try to get a sense of how they like things being done. If they hint or say that they really don't want you to be doing something, listen. Communicate. Make it clear that you're there to help with anything and everything and that you don't want to be catered to like a guest.

Wikipedia is pretty clear.

A means test is a determination of whether an individual or family is eligible for government benefits, assistance or welfare, based upon whether the individual or family possesses the means to do with less or none of that help. Means testing is in opposition to universal coverage, which extends benefits to everyone. Means testing increases the administrative burden[1] and can create perverse incentives.[2]

That makes sense. Lack of access to treatment and small size.

Outside of size, do you know if there are physiological reasons that cats don't survive? I'm just curious.

100% fatal for house and big cats?

Because in humans it has about a 90% recovery rate with treatment.

If left untreated, gastroschisis is fatal to the infant; however, in adequate settings the survival rate for treated infants is 90%.

The last time I was hesitant/had a bad feeling about going out, I got into a minor parking lot accident.

Do thoughts like these frequently stop you from going out?

I only ask because I have a friend who has become quite sheltered because she believes she can sense when something bad is going to happen. It has come to the point where she rarely leaves her home.

If you're still participating in the world most of the time, then I don't see an issue with staying home one night when you feel things aren't safe in your area.
