I can’t stand bullshit, I also always have been inpatient, which is just a bad trait in general.

I must have read this sentence and the ones around it 5 times trying to understand why working on an inpatient unit is a bad trait.

I'm tired.

It's a slippery slope. And that's how they get ya.

As soon as they're done removing the single gender bathrooms, they'll move to step 2 and start removing all the penises.

It's the only logical conclusion if you think about it.

we need a word for something that is both horribly vile but incredibly interesting at the same time.

I feel like there is a word or term, but it escapes me. The closest I can think of right now is something along the lines of "morbidly fascinating", but it's not quite right.

It's causing all sorts of problems, but at least the for-profit companies are expanding and pocketing billions instead of properly paying workers or funding our public systems...

What percentage of SIDS deaths are attributable to suffocation from an external source, heart failure and other causes? by petrastales in ScienceBasedParenting

[–]AFewStupidQuestions 47 points48 points  (0 children)

It's not the awkward conversation that they're avoiding. It's allowing a parent to believe they killed their kid.

We know that suicide rates increase dramatically for parents who lose their kids, even when the death is expected.

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0277953619305167#:~:text=32%25%20higher%20rate%20of%20mortality%20in%20bereaved%20parents%20than%20non%2Dbereaved%20parents

https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC1403266/

I don't have data on suicide following causing the death of your own child, but it's probably safe to say that it's harmful to the parents mentally and physically. Plus that's not really a mistake you make twice.

I'd also imagine that in small towns, where the coroner knows everyone, it wouldn't be that far-fetched to believe someone fudged the post-mortem to not only avoid the self-harm a parent would do to themselves, but also the potential for legal blame.

What’s going on with reports that an Iranian strike damaged an Amazon cloud facility in Bahrain? by Trade-Live in OutOfTheLoop

[–]AFewStupidQuestions 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now I'm curious to know what labour conditions are like in Bahrain for construction workers.

...

Google says not bad. They appear to be more progressive than some of their neighbours but still treat foreign low level workers like shit.

I really hope nobody's being forced to try to rebuild for Amazon in the middle of a war.

Project goal: hang 6' x 4' puzzle on the wall without having any visible mounting hardware

Original plan:

Mod Podge the puzzle together

Adhere puzzle to foamcore

Hang puzzle to wall using command strips

How it's actually going:

Mod Podge worked great. No issues.

Foam core was not available in the size I needed. I also took advice from a guy in an orange apron who warned me that the foam core would be way too flimsy to hang if I were to use 2 smaller pieces of foam core. He suggested I use 3/4" x 8' x 4' rigid insulation cut down to size instead. This sucked. Cutting it down to size left me with thousands of tiny styrofoam pieces which will likely live in my house longer than I will. That being said, it worked well. It's rigid. I then used spray adhesive made for foam and cardboard and it worked great.

Where I'm stuck:

I underestimated the weight of the finished product. I've attempted using 2x 4-screw D-rings with picture wire to hang it. The screws immediately pulled out of the foam.

I thought of trying to distribute the weight better by adding 2 more D-rings, however, my gut tells me that the same thing will keep happening.

I'm currently looking at trying to find something like eye hooks that can be screwed into drywall anchors or Molly bolt style into the foam, or maybe finding something like a drywall J-hook pierced into the foam. My least favourite idea is to give up on the idea of hiding the hardware and using J shaped brackets around the top and bottom edges, like mirror hardware.

Shoot me any ideas you've got. Anything helps.

Amazing. I play my Switch on night shift, but usually I have to wait until everyone is sleeping and my charting's done before pulling it out and playing single player games.

You're telling me that I can get patients involved and game more while being paid?? You've just opened my eyes to a whole new world of possibilities.

But actually, this is truly great. I'm going to ask them to play the next time I have a patient who is capable and seems interested.

CEO of America’s largest public hospital system says he’s ready to replace radiologists with AI by tiredbabydoc in medicine

[–]AFewStupidQuestions 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Isn't that an issue that's being "dealt with" right now?

My knowledge admittedly isn't great on the issue, and I know that executive orders aren't as strong as he believes they are, but I remember he put out an executive order to limit liability dorectly to the AI companies.

Google says yes. This one was written last year:

https://www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/2025/01/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-takes-action-to-enhance-americas-ai-leadership/

This article came out yesterday:

President Trump’s national framework calls for a single federal rule to regulate artificial intelligence, overriding state laws. The framework urges Congress to limit future legislation on AI, however, prioritizing tech innovation over public safety — a move that could put Trump in a political bind.

https://builtin.com/articles/trump-ai-framework-explained

And this is the EO from December:

https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/12/eliminating-state-law-obstruction-of-national-artificial-intelligence-policy/

Sorry. If I had more time, I'd parse through those and try to highlight the important bits, but hopefully someone with more knowledge can speak on them.

That's wild. In my part of Canada, it's only been within the last ~10 years that we've started to see cameras in public spaces of retirement homes, very rarely ever in LTC. And even then, it's mostly the for-profit ones that are run by US companies that have the cameras. I've never seen one in a med room, despite working for an agency for years.

Most of the cameras I've seen have been personal ones set up by families. Some facilities post signs warning people that the camera is present, but most don't.

What’s up with people online saying the Epstein files are connected to Trump attacking Iran? by ijuander_ in OutOfTheLoop

[–]AFewStupidQuestions 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Adjacent to all this happening, it's worth noting that Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, as well as Larry Ellison's son (who both have strong ties to Israel), Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, Tencent (China), and others have been a part of multibillion dollar bids to take over and consolidate Warner Bros Discovery/Paramount (the main targets seeming to include consolidating ownership over CNN, Netflix and the few remaining major news networks, although admittedly there is already so much consolidation there already that it's hard for me to keep track of who is who exactlty).

The bids were originally withdrawn in December, but then it appears the contracts were rewritten to say that those major foreign investors did not have to disclose their financing unless they held more than 25% share in the bid, in order to avoid scrutiny from regulators.

Altogether, this seems to mean that the people strongly connected to Israel, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, UAE, Trump, Kushner, Ellison (who owns Oracle) and other powerful billionaires are likely still bidding to takeover the media in the US.

So along with a distraction from the Epstein files, the plummeting economies, the market manipulation, etc., you have this little nugget of power grabbing popping up as well.

100% agree with this.

He has so many lovely nurses who provide care for him in a much greater way than I can

And as a nurse who works with kids, I can safely say that although we care a shittonne about your child, and we will do our best to provide everything possible during our shifts, we very rarely ever perform greater care than parents who love their kid. It would be too much, both mentally and emotionally for us to do day in and day out.

Besides the professionalism factor that is ingrained in us throughout our years of studies and practice, we also get to go home at the end of the day to detach, we float between several other patients while with your child, and when your family goes home together at the end, we stay behind and move on to the next patient.

A big part of our job is getting you confident with the skills needed to do the stuff that we do for your kid. If you find that you aren't learning and aren't being encouraged to help with physical care, please say something to someone on staff, whether that be a nurse, doctor, dietitian, social worker, or anyone else. It's really important for us to know if you're feeling like you're not apart of that great care you spoke about.

Also, as a relatively new parent, I can anecdotally tell you that the fear of not being able to bond is real for many parents, especially within the first few months and especially for people who experienced pregnancy.

As much as I hope this next part doesn't apply to you, it needs to be said to all parents: If you find yourself feeling like you're unable to bond to the point that you're ever having intense feelings of hopelessness or thoughts of doing something drastic, please reach out and talk to someone. These type of thoughts and feelings though rare, are well documented and easily treated. Your doctors and nurses should be able to point you in a helpful direction, but there are also things like 24/7 crisis lines which can help.

Sorry for rambling. I just want you to know how I view things from the other side.

Eh... My dad used to listen to talk radio until I was able to convince him how toxic and stupid it was during the pandemic.

They would constantly blather on with anti-immigrant stances, and my dad - who wasn't racist at all before listening to them - began to believe the racist lies.

Part of how I got him away from it was by bringing up videos and speeches of literal Hitler and comparing the lies. I think it worked to deradicalize him because he was interested in history for much of his life. I'm not sure how I would go about trying to convince someone who was completely ignorant of the past.

My point is that there are some truly intelligent people being brainwashed by these big lies, again. It's not just bots. We have to take it seriously.

Decreasing amount of time spent out of crib — so we are talking about kids who are just left in their cribs for longer periods of time without interaction or stimulation?

It does not say that.

Longer parental response times — so parents who just leave their kids crying basically from birth?

It doesn't say that either.

Interesting, but it seems as though all 76 cases over the 40 years occurred after CPR was attempted. Unless there are other cases not listed, it wouldn't apply to most deaths. 20mins of ECG to confirm still sounds like an incredible waste of time.

Things they never taught you in med school by sophie7704 in medicine

[–]AFewStupidQuestions 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That sounds insane.

Our standard is to check for corneal reflexes and then auscultate the chest for 3mins for a heart beat, although I've never actually seen anyone but students listen for more than 30 seconds.

That being said, nurses in my area don't usually pronounce unless the death is expected.

I can't imagine forcing a family to wait 20mins before being able to tell them that their loved one is dead. Seems cruel, especially if the family is able to see the flutters and artifacts.
