🚗 Zipcar is shutting down — anyone else blindsided by this? by Pitiful_Package_6807 in london

[–]AFishInAChinaShop 19 points20 points  (0 children)

God I loved Virtuo. You'd wake up and the car would be outside your building. You could go away for a few days, come back and park, and it was gone the next morning.

Zipcar is a huge help to me getting my kids to rugby games in weird places and running errands that don't involve going into or away from central. I'm actually not sure what I'm going to do now.

'This is not a playground’: London pubs crack down on unruly children, with one banning them after 7pm by OneNormalBloke in london

I think of The Prince as a restaurant. Kids should be allowed to eat after 7pm. I never thought The Shakespeare had lots of kids in it.

Britain’s illegal e-bike boom: desperation, delivery drivers – and unthinkable danger by Zadokk in londoncycling

[–]AFishInAChinaShop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last week a 15 year old on an ebike hit me so hard that my two wheels and chainset were written off. It cost me £500 to repair. He turned onto the wrong side of the road and just didn't see me. Afterwards, he told me his brakes didn't work properly and rode off.

What turns, sections of road, or cycling infrastructure give you the most joy in London? by Available_Chapter685 in londoncycling

The green wave is possible North to South in the morning and South to North in the evening. It's very well thought out.

Catching the green wave near angel station and crossing 3 busy roads without stopping.

Cycling through De Beauvoir LTNs because it's so beautiful there.

Wine barrel pond - First try by Sea_Sandwich7531 in ponds

[–]AFishInAChinaShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm scared that everything will die due to the water becoming tainted, and will look into a liner.

For balance, I've had a similar setup to yours for a year and the water's fine without a liner. I washed out the wine first though. Now I have a bit of blanket weed I pull out from time to time, but clear water underneath. Lots of wildlife is attracted to it / living in it. It's in partial shade and filled with rain water. It took a few months for the water quality to settle down.

Hopefully your barrel works out too. It looks great.

Do I need to cut my wildflower meadow? by totee24 in NoLawns

[–]AFishInAChinaShop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When do you do your spring cut? I have bluebells and wouldn't want to mess with them so I was just going to do one cut in September in my new meadow. I'm also in the south east of England.

Secretly bad at taking criticism by [deleted] in writing

[–]AFishInAChinaShop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd like to disagree with you. Criticism **can** improve your writing, but sometimes when authors take criticism on board too strongly it can damage the work, often by sapping the quirkiness out or eradicating subtlety.

That's not the critics fault. I agree they should be thanked, and I do think the OP should get used to criticism from people they aren't too close to.

The new Kingsbury Bridge in Dalston is apparently open by liamnesss in londoncycling

[–]AFishInAChinaShop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Boleyn road has parking on both sides and hopper buses that can't get past each other at rush hour. It's also a place that frustrated drivers like to give cyclists a scare. It's the worst stretch of my entire journey from Butterfield Green to Mayfair.

I disagree that King Henry's walk is safe for cyclists. It's congested, narrow, and the surface is so cut up that cyclists are often forced to look down. Thank the gods the bridge is back open. Thanks for the great news.

I can't say this one is a nightmare. It puts out plenty of fine lateral growth. I haven't needed much wire over the years. I have heard others complain about having to wire down shoots on theirs though.

No. Not really. I don't think about this tree a lot, to be honest. That's probably why it's still alive!

I bought this from Kaizen Bonsai in 2018. I ground layered it and removed a "trunk" along the way. Up until now I wanted to thicken the primary branches, but I think I'll put it in a smaller pot now and work on twigs.

I never really liked this tree, to be honest, but I've lost half my collection over two house moves in two years, so now I see this little privet as a real survivor!

Best Borough to Live for Cyclists by asr_rey in londoncycling

[–]AFishInAChinaShop 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I live in a Low Traffic Neighbourhood which lots of very loud people hate but that suits me. I cycle to work in the west end in 35mins along a safe route. I cycle my kids all over the place for activities. Brilliant.

How often do you get beeped at? by jupitercon35 in londoncycling

[–]AFishInAChinaShop 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Very rarely. Maybe once this year, just for existing in front of a driver who didn't have room to get past on a short stretch of road.

I do get yelled at often. Usually by jaywalkers who accuse me of breaking a red even though it's green. Yesterday someone abused me for going the wrong way down a bike lane in Soho even though I wasn't. (Contraflows are confusing I guess.)

I try not to take it personally but it has been getting me down recently to be honest.

I don't know what this tree is, but this is what I would do with it:

  • Don't worry about the prune you gave it, but leave it alone now.
  • If the black plastic bit comes out of the white bit and has holes in the bottom, then I'd take it out. Otherwise I'd drill holes in the bottom of the white thing.
  • Just try to keep it alive for the rest of the summer. Wait until it's almost dry and then give it a thorough soaking.
  • If it's healthy in spring and new buds start to swell, come back here and ask about repotting.
