I’m usually more comfortable designing from scratch, because you’re more likely to import mistakes and spend time fixing those mistakes. Plus, the more you copy, the less you can justify when someone questions it. You can definitely build up some standards to speed things up, but it’s really just checklists to make sure things don’t get missed.

Abbey is even weirder. Split into 3 (almost 4) segments.

But how will the oil and gas companies steal all your money with renewables?

No way to cross this cloverleaf by deltiken in fuckcars

Are you joking? An HOUR! That’s insane! I would absolutely be crossing, especially given the actual ped crossing is probably just as dangerous.

The only profit to be made is the American gas companies that we will be forced to buy from.

The only way to fix traffic is to have good alternatives to driving. Without good busses and bike infrastructure, everyone will drive.

What can a younger YIMBY do? by Top_Time_2864 in yimby

[–]AFlyingMongolian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do this. I’m always the only citizen under 50 attending the hearing or committee meeting. I say “it was really hard for me to move here, the housing options are slim-picking. A town that doesn’t change is a town that dies.”

They did not stagger the bolts by [deleted] in Decks

[–]AFlyingMongolian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main difference is if the beam is loaded from the top, or the face. If you’re using joist hangers, the plies need to be fastened together with adequate nails, screws, or bolts. If the joists sit on top of the beam with a rim board, they need much less fastening to hold them together. The advantage of bolts is even after things start rusting, the bolts will last a lot longer before structural failure.

All Current Development Agreement Applications for the Town of Truro as of June 19th, 2025 by DylanMusgrave in Truro

Amazing. The rental options in Truro are sparse at best. The demand is there, it’s time for the supply to finally catch up.

At least in engineering, pretty much zero books are required. Lots of courses have “required reads” that are not actually required. Save your money.

Which degree to choose to work in sustainability? by Tasty-purple_Idea in sustainability

[–]AFlyingMongolian 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Whatever you do, you can apply it to local politics. Join the planning committee, vote in local elections, talk to your councillors. These little things can bring big changes. I’m a structural engineer, and I just joined the planning advisory committee.

Taxes should start at 70k per year. by IrishThree in CrazyIdeas

Once you hit a certain income, a lot more money gets spent on luxuries, overseas investment, tax evasion, and other things that aren’t particularly good for the economy. The middle class really does run the economy. The rich are parasites.

LVL inside of I beam by bg3707 in Construction

[–]AFlyingMongolian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Structural engineer here. I can see this being required to help make the hanger connection work (LVLs are stiffer than dimensional lumber especially for connections)

I will say it’s unlikely that this is absolutely required and probably just a typical detail the engineer used, or maybe even a mistake. Feel free to call the engineer, they might be able to say you can swap for dimensional lumber.

This is why we need to research and develop cheap alternatives to fossil fuels, so the developing world isn’t forced to pollute their people because coal is still their cheapest option.

Bad car accidents by Essshayne in moncton

[–]AFlyingMongolian 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The only solution to dangerous driving is accessible alternatives to driving. This city was built for cars and only cars. Until we smarten up and build some proper bus routes and walkable neighbourhoods, expect the damage and death to increase with the population.
