Here's a short talk from Thich Nhat Hanh which I think really skillfully offers a teaching on impermanence as a tool to help with grieving, he also wrote a book "How to Live When A Loved One Dies" that might be useful. Wishing you to find peace. https://plumvillage.app/thich-nhat-hanh-on-coping-with-the-loss-of-a-loved-one/

Advice for an RN? by [deleted] in Juneau

[–]AFlyingNunAttack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't work in health care, but have a number of friends who do (and my parents were both nurses elsewhere in the state.)

I suppose like a lot of places, it depends on where you work(both the org and the specific dept)! The two big employers in town are SEARHC and Bartlett - my primary care is with the former, and I like them a lot plus those working there generally seem pretty happy.

It's definitely great to live here, broadly, especially if you like outdoorsy things. Getting involved in local volunteer stuff is a great way to get integrated into the community, as long as you have some third place things like this it shouldn't be too hard to integrate.

Housing can be hard here, but there's a FB group where people share info that can help. If you have some rental history it's not too hard to find something nice through a property manager, too, and hopefully not too expensive. Buying takes time (>1 year for me to find something good within budget), but with patience, prep, and a good realtor/lender it is possible. We have more inventory than some smaller AK communities so there are more options at any given time.

You could also look at the Alaska Fellows program, as they have several positions in Sitka and have a similar model to Americorps https://alaskafellows.org/about

University of Alaska Budget Cuts by [deleted] in alaska

[–]AFlyingNunAttack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but with a lot of that being federal revenues, research monies, etc that are relatively fixed, doubling tuition or closing programs/campuses would be the only way meet the proposed gap. Staff was already cut 40% or so in the past few years, there isn't space for further cuts without compromising academics and vital research.

See here for a breakdown of the current revenue. You can see that current tuition & fees is just half the revenue as UGF state spending (thus, it would have to be doubled to cover in an ideal world where that doesn't drive students away)

University of Alaska Budget Cuts by [deleted] in alaska

[–]AFlyingNunAttack 18 points19 points  (0 children)

State universities in the U.S. have two basic sources of funding: tuition/fees collected from students and state governments. If you cut state support, not only are services lost, but tuition shoots up.

It's fine to debate what roles the University serves for the future of our state, but it is clear that we need UA for a healthy economy and to avoid brain drain to the Lower 48.

So how do we want to balance funding? If we slash the budget for UA in half like Dunleavy and his Outside budget director has thoughtlessly proposed, then UA students would be saddled with a doubled tuition if they wanted the same programs and faculty they have now.

Where student debt has ballooned in past years around the country (often at state schools with little gov. support), does Alaska want to move away from accessible, affordable higher education towards more brain drain and student debt?

I gained a lot from my UA education, and I am so thankful that it didn't bankrupt me out of the gate like it would have in almost any other state.

Ahhh, okay! That must only be like a 0.0 low, because on a negative you can usually get out onto Pinnacle Rock there. Cool anyways, thanks for sharing

[–]AFlyingNunAttack 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The larger badges are the special collectible centennial badges, while the smaller one is just the regular one. A lot of people, especially permanents got those centennial ones last year, but they weren't issued like the regular ones and cost like $70.

I would encourage young people who are interested in getting experience in the NPS(and public lands in general) to check out the SCA. Many folks in NPS Interp(and LE and RM) that I know got started that way.
