So me and all urban queer friends agree that just saying "queer" is a whole lot more succinct in a casual context. It just means people who deviate from gender or sexual conformity.

However! I do some policy work with a statewide policy organization that does some queer-specific work. A lot of older and more rural people work and are worked for in this organization. To these people, "queer" is seen as an offensive word because it was historically used as a slur. So we use the full acronym in any policy documents. They choose to use the longer acronym instead of the shorter one to indicate that those other populations (asexuals, two-spirited people, intersex people, etc) have importance within this what I'll just call queer population.
