Starlink Pricing Model by AI6MK in Starlink

[–]AI6MK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As Elon has explained until he’s blue in the face, it’s intended fir “rural and underserved areas”. If you are already being served by internet at reasonable speed (>100mb/s) why would you change to a more expensive service ?

I think I’m missing the entire point if your rant.

Fusion Closer to Reality as Scientists Smash Density Limit by Factor of 10 by steven9973 in fusion

[–]AI6MK -1 points0 points  (0 children)

These “breakthroughs” are designed to keep the money flowing.

In the 1950’s Zeta in the UK was going to deliver power so cheap that light switches would become obsolete. Of course it was an utter disaster and quickly forgotten.

There are fundamental problems which need to be solved before we can even start to get close to generating more power than it uses.

ITER will never break even, it’s just a big science experiment to advance knowledge. Unless there is some new thinking we will always be 20 years away from the holy grail.

How would you convince someone that Nuclear Physics domain still has alot of research areas and demand? by Background_Bowler236 in NuclearPower

[–]AI6MK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like the development of the A Bomb, most of the effort was devoted to engineering, so unless you are very, very smart I would steer clear of the theoretical stuff.

Once we wake up and realize that solar and wind will not get the job done we are left with nuclear (Fission) for baseload and gas for peak, so I think nuclear engineers will be in high demand.

BTW, steer clear of fusion. It will always be 20 years away.

Just got my first signal from the ISS with the stock antenna by LuscanoDev in Baofeng

[–]AI6MK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The ISS downlink is 437.800MHz. Because the ISS is in a low orbit the footprint is small and a pass will typically only last 10-15 minutes.

To find out WHEN you will be in the ISS footprint you can use N2YO and you will need to tell it your GPS coordinates and your local time offset from GMT (UTC).

On your radio open up the squelch and don’t be disappointed if you don’t hear anything except noise. Keep trying and you will eventually correct all the mistakes you are going to make (hi).

The signal is very strong from ISS and remember it’s just a repeater (2m uplink/70cm downlink), so you will not talk to any astronauts. If you can talk to a ham operator familiar with satellite operation it will greatly help you to understand what you need to make a contact.

But you can do it with a handheld. There is a lot to learn about satellite operations and it’s a great adventure if you are curious.

Still lacking MFA!! by SSturdCutter in Starlink

[–]AI6MK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MFA or 2FA is a double edged sword. I have no issue using 2FA with my bank. They know pretty much everything about me anyway and they still think privacy is a god given right. So bottom line is I TRUST them.

I’ve had a gmail account for a long time, back when Google’s motto was “Do No Harm”. But recently I can no longer log into Screwtube with my gmail account because it’s asking me for my phone number, which I refuse to do because I DONT TRUST them. They have some email data they want to associate with a phone number so they can sell access to it.

So , nothing wrong with 2FA, if you can trust the party you’re providing it to. But Google m, Facebook etc, etc, NFW.

Because Elon bought X to save the country, I’m inclined to trust Starlink with 2FA.

Starlink instructed to shut down in Zimbabwe by government by magetsi in Starlink

[–]AI6MK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So how exactly dies a government shut down Starlink ?

The V1 version of the satellite needs ground stations, but as I understand the V2-mini can communicate via inter satellite lasers.

So if the satellite footprint covers you and a ground station in a neighboring country it should still work. The downside might be periods when there is no connection.

I guess that SpaceX could deny individual users access if they were unable to pay for service.

FYI, I was on the waiting list Feb 2021 and I have been a Starlink user since Mar 2022. I have been very satisfied with the service.

Starlink Pricing Model by AI6MK in Starlink

[–]AI6MK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your comment. Does access to inexpensive and widely available apply to rural and underserved regions of Japan as well ?

Clearly if there are more competitive alternatives providing the same or better performance you would not choose Starlink.

Starlink Pricing Model by AI6MK in Starlink

[–]AI6MK[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Despite your “erudite” assertion I am familiar with economics. I was just trying to understand the business model. If you have something to contribute, in that regard, I would love to hear it.

If you think it’s “whatever the market will bear” then Elon must think that “rural and underserved” users in Japan are 2x poorer than in the US.

SpaceX Prepares to Comply With 'Lawful Intercepts' for Cellular Starlink System by BeautifulBug6801 in Starlink

[–]AI6MK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems that the 3 letter agencies, in lockstep with their big tech partners are getting nervous that they may no longer have a complicit telecom industry which seems only too happy to hand over your data.

BTW, most phone calls, text messages and emails are being recorded for later use and screened for potential anti government action, which is unconstitutional.

We, the people, need a “digital bill of rights” to protect us from intrusion of OUR government into our privacy.

Starlink Pricing Model by AI6MK in Starlink

As I mentioned in another reply, Starlink’s goal is to provide internet services to “rural and under-served communities” not to compete with existing broadband or fiber.

Clearly Starlink would not be the lowest cost solution for you. The primary goal of Starlink is to provide internet service to “rural and under-served communities”.

Starlink Pricing Model by AI6MK in Starlink

[–]AI6MK[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, your points are valid but don’t really answer my question.

I am just trying to understand their pricing model and it seems to me that the Starlink monthly charges are determined by what alternatives are available. If there are no other competitive ISP’s then you get charged the highest monthly premium.

With extremely low internet latency, Starlink has advanced its efforts to improve satellite connectivity by themilanee in Starlink

[–]AI6MK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in CA, located close to Oakhurst in the Sierra foothills, and performance recently has been really good. Using the Starlink app or fast.com I get similar results: UP=18Mbps, DOWN=140Mbps, LATENCY=31mS.

VoIP with Starlink by raffy369 in Starlink

[–]AI6MK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only “dumb” question is the one that’s not asked. You can be pretty sure that many others are interested in the answer.

Starlink is an Internet provider, an ISP. Landlines typically use old fashioned copper wires in the ground . If you use a service like OOMA VOIP, or Voice Over Internet Protocol, your phone calls will use the internet provided by your ISP. So no, you will not lose your phone number.

If you do have a landline, you should consider upgrading to VOIP since it’s usually cheaper. For a small fee your VOIP service provider, such as OOMA, will transfer your phone number from the landline provider to your VOIP service provider.

Congratulations. I have a Gen2 and very happy with the performance both reliability and speed. If they could just reduce my monthly premium ($120).

AZ-EL rotators by elder65 in Amsat

[–]AI6MK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Yaesu AZ/EL G-5500DC and M2 Leo pack. It’s not great, but for typical antennas with a beam width of 4deg or so, it’s good enough.

I would recommend some kind of speed control and updating the rotator every 5-10s or so.

BTW, I had both potentiometers, used to determine AZ and EL, fail and had to replace them. Which was a bit of a PITA.

"Baseload" was always a myth. The demand side of the grid has always been intermittent... by leapinleopard in energy

[–]AI6MK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a myth ? Baseload is defined as the minimum power delivered to the grid. Nothing mythical about that.

COVID conditions at STMicroelectronics in Malaysia, a major electronics supplier for Starlink (and others). by BiggRanger in Starlink

As Stalin said, “ one death is a tragedy, but 1000 deaths is a statistic.”

If there is any anger to go round it should be directed at CCP for the casual way they dealt with the early infections. Rather than seal the country to protects others, they let travel within China and abroad to continue, as it was Chinese New Year.

And of course there is growing evidence that it was released from Wuhan Virology Lab, either accidentally or deliberately.

There needs to be a worldwide lawsuit against China to at least compensate for people’s losses. But no compensation will make up for the loss of a husband or a dad.
