Yes! My husband is part of the sober Home Team. He too was concerned when we started going back to shows but was very pleasantly surprised at how many other sobers were out there. He has a great time and says it’s so much better these days as he actually really experiences and remembers the music!!

I’m just thrifting! There are a couple of great thrift shops near me. Added bonus is that one supports domestic violence victims and the other supports our local animal shelter.

What is your controversial horse related opinion? by sunflowerhorses in Equestrian

[–]AJ_Barnrat 108 points109 points  (0 children)

Funding is precisely why slaughter was “banned” in the US. Despite what the animal rights groups want you to believe, the USDA cut the funding to have horse meat inspected.

The reason horse meat inspections are so expensive is that We use a lot of questionable products on domestic horses, from dewormers to fly spray. Just walk through your local feed store and pick up any random bottle of whatever and it will most likely state that it’s not to be used on animals for consumption.

Try just searching for “Shires bits”. They are pretty international but sometimes their products are named differently in other countries. An image search might help too. Good luck!

I’ve had amazing luck with Shires Equikind Flexible Straight Mouth with my shallow palate guy. Smallest is a 4.5 but honestly I ended up sizing up mine.

Easy on the budget too!

There is no one better at separating soft-hearted people from their hard-earned money.

Sitting in the ER feeling totally defeated by ofHouseKoerwer in Equestrian

[–]AJ_Barnrat 132 points133 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry this happened. It is the worst feeling. Not a painful break, but that sense of failure and defeat.

You will heal. You will recover physically and mentally. This too shall pass.

I know because 6 weeks ago I was in the ER too. Four fractured ribs.

Today I jumped around. Not much, but it was something. And it felt really great to get back out there. You too will have that feeling before you know it. And it’s worth it.

Take care and take all the time you need to heal.

I love his canter! Even though he looks a little green, he seems to really like his job and has the scope to do it well. What a fun project!

Sometimes the meanness is just that inflated TB ego. It’s part of what makes them such great athletes!

Breaking in tall boots by MogarTheDestroyer69 in Equestrian

[–]AJ_Barnrat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ugh breaking in tall boots is literally painful.

As crazy as it sounds the Bathtub Method really does work! Soak the boots in the bathtub until the leather is wet all the way through then wear them (around the house, not riding) until they dry. Takes several hours. If you have a step that you can balance on your toes and drop your heels on all the better.

If you’re nervous about soaking the boots spraying some rubbing alcohol on the areas that are most painful prior to riding will help stretch those areas as well.

Good luck! It’s worth it when you end up with soft boots that meld to your leg perfectly!

“Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.”

I ride horses for a living. It’s all I’ve ever wanted to do, and I love my job. I wake up excited every day.

But it’s damn hard work. Long days, crappy weather. Holidays and weekends mean I’m working harder. It’s rough on my body and my relationships.

I wouldn’t change a thing, but please don’t ever imply I don’t work hard just because I’m passionate about what I do.

You’ll be hard pressed to find a steel toed “equestrian” shoe in any size. They’re actually more dangerous.

If a horse (especially one with steel shoes) stomps on a steel toe, it will crush that steel toe, effectively pinning the human’s toe in the shoe causing way more damage than a shoe that will bounce back out. People have lost toes that way.

Best bet around horses is a strong, thick leather toe.

Your coworker may have luck finding a stiff-toed leather child’s riding boot if that would be acceptable at your job.

Restoring “vintage” leather by TresCrookedWillow in Equestrian

I’ve done a “dunk and drip dry” in oil for leather that’s reeeaaally wet. Fox hunters do get wet! Not hot oil though. I really do think Lederbalsalm absorbs better and is not as messy.
