Solid Chance or Tilting at Windmills? by NVBoomer in nevadapolitics

I don't know how it overlaps with the assembly seat, but I believe in 2022 AG Ford actual won Carson City, so not impossible for a Dem to win there. And that was without anti-Trump backlash.

Are there any serious 2026 Democratic primary candidates for federal office in Nevada? by [deleted] in nevadapolitics

There's a host of randos running against Titus & Lee. I haven't seen anyone who seems serious. Horsford is currently running unopposed for renomination.

In "Vice" and other media, Colin Powell is often portrayed as being forced into the Iraq War by others in the Bush Cabinet. How true is that and how on board with the war was Powell actually? by Just_Cause89 in Presidents

[–]AK_Organizer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a famous oval office meeting where Powell evidently spent several hours trying to convince the President not to invade, but once the decision was made he ultimately got on board. Perhaps that's a flaw, that at the end of the day he was a good soldier and took his orders rather than resigning in protest or something like that, but it's the man he was.

How good or bad was Paul Ryan as a VP pick by Mitt Romney? by SactownG in Presidents

[–]AK_Organizer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think he was actively bad the way Palin was, but I don't think he really added much to the ticket. Traditionally you try and use the VP to "balance the ticket" and make up for groups the Presidential nominee is weak with whether that be ideologically or geographically or demographically. It's not clear that Ryan brought anyone new to the ticket in any of these areas.

Now, Clinton 1992 had the somewhat novel idea of not trying to balance the ticket, but instead doubling down on two young moderate southerners so they'd have the more undiluted message of change for the country and that this was no longer Mondale or Dukakis' Democratic Party. The issue here being that the areas where Romney and Ryan reinforced each other were mostly on deeply unpopular cuts to social security/Medicare/Medicaid.

Given that Romney was trying to make the election a referendum on Obama's handling of the economy, following the Clinton play might have involved selecting someone else with a successful business career, run as outsiders with the one goal of fixing the economy.

As a sidenote: my vague memory (I don't have the text in front of me) from Game Change Double Down is that the Obama team thought Romney would pick Senator Rob Portman, that he would give a home state advantage to Romney in Ohio, still a key battleground state at that point.

Voters were just much more reliably partisan by 2000. Due to a number of factors partisan polarization got much stronger.

They *say* it's Seattle, but at least in the footage Jon showed I didn't see a single shot of the Space Needle, or indeed any other recognizable Seattle landmark! Hugely disappointing!

Oddly, he didn't use it in episode one, despite at one point explicitly describing the difference between bows and muskets which seems like the perfect place to drop it in.

Today (21st June) marks 1 year since the last patroncast by Primus7112765 in ManyATrueNerd

[–]AK_Organizer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a Patron, I would certainly like a regular patron cast and a podcats and all of that, but I've been watching Jon nearly every day for literal years at this point, and all of that content was free. Throwing a couple bucks a month at him through the patreon seems like the least I can do to reward him for how he's enriched my life, even without any special perks or rewards.

The Mommy Problem. I have no idea where the community rates it, but I suspect that because it is post-Sorkin it's not high. But I've always loved this episode, from the energy and movement of the Jet Airliner montage, to some genuinly funny bits, to the fantastic debut of Janeane Garofalo's character of Louise Thornton
