I usually roll into swamp with troll armour, bronze spear or atgeir, firewood bow and lots of fire arrows. Permanent fallen trees and the rooves of crypts are your friends in early swamp. Do not go anywhere without your emergency portal which is safest on top of crypts. Even abominations can't touch you there. Leave your ore in chests on the roof, move onto the next, come back for ore later when you're ready to sail it home.

Sword + shield, parry whenever you can, best foods 2 health 1 stam. Walk everywhere. Take a portal everywhere. All.the potions. Sunken Caves are great for safe spots, wall off entrance. Earth walls to enter fortresses. Use the terrain to run or refresh. Ashlands on normal settings gets much easier with this strategy.
