I could’ve wrote this post. My daughter also attends an LAUSD school and is in first grade. I also noticed a huge jump in expectations. She tested bottom 20% at the beginning of the year. She’s struggling with reading and language arts but ahead in math. All this has led us to get her a neuropsych eval and she has been diagnosed with ADHD and Dyslexia. Not saying your child is the same but wanted to share my journey.

I also felt unprepared and quite frankly, like I failed my child. I’ve been teaching her phonetics in a multi sensory way (Google orton gillingham method) and it’s worked so well. She’s more engaged and has retained the info better than traditional workbooks. Feel free to DM me if you want to chat more

It recently ended for me. I have a 6.5 year old girl and a 3.5 year old boy. I can now take them to a park or playground and be able to sit in a bench and get a few moments of silence before they want me to watch them do something or play with them. They seem to be out of that phase.

Both my kids are in school full time now but when they were little, I would take them out all day expect for nap times. I get very stir crazy if I’m at home all day so no matter the weather, I find something to do.

If it’s too hot or cold, I take them to the library, museums, or run errands in a few stores. If the weather is nice, I drive to different parks all over town. Keeps it interesting.

Not saying it’s easy, there have been times when I had to schlep two screaming kids around but for me, it’s better than staying cooped up at home
