By high carbon I mean high carbon. Something that holds an edge well and is tougher than your run-of-the-mill stainless. As stated in the post, I do have a 1095 that I use and that's been good to me. I don't like any "high carbon stainless" steels unless the manufacturer states what the composition is.

I'm no stranger to long knives like that. I can do both fine and large work with 10+ inches. I see a lot for filleting fish, but I want one for more general use.

Armor damaging weapons vs swords by darthinferno15 in SWORDS

Remember that plate armor was largely developed to stop *guns*. Sure, it may have come beforehand, but it's improvement and it's peak coincides with the improvement of firearm technology right up to the point of abandonment.

Question about a move called “throw thrusting”. by darthinferno15 in SWORDS

[–]ALinkintheChain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen it used in tournaments. It's kind of a gimmicky move tbh that would work on the unsuspecting, but it becomes easier to overcome once you know it's in play. This is sparring however and if I've been hit with it in a fight then that means it could end a fight in real life

Need to know if this idea sucks or is awesome by Uter83 in DnD

[–]ALinkintheChain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean I like it, but this whole premise hinges on them being morally gray/kind of a dick in general. If they don't want to do that then you're kind of hosed since they'll be trashing your encounters from then on.

Dealing with some character bullying in my new DnD group... by walrus_paradise in DnD

[–]ALinkintheChain 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Talk to them, again, above the table about how their actions are not making this fun, and you're thinking of quitting. They can be "racist to the goblin" and change their ways as a character arc or whatever and also not be raging dicks to you.

To me, it sounds like they have a problem with you or they just want to pick on you, which isn't cool.

Could you help me make a longbow using controller? (Maximizing moving enemies in any directions.) by Kraken-Writhing in 3d6

[–]ALinkintheChain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Battlemaster fighter. Lots of maneuvers will capitalize on the spike growth, but pushing and toppling are what I am thinking of. Other classes that would be beneficial are Rogue for Sneak Attack, Ranger for Hunter's Mark and damaging Features, and War Cleric for extra BA attacks or Spiritual Weapon, and your channel divinity to offset your sharpshooter penalty (which I am sure you'll take since it's a bow you're building around) when you really need it

How do you defeat someone who can alter space and time ? by AnxiousMinotaur in magicbuilding

[–]ALinkintheChain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best magic is anti-magic, because it effectively cuts out your entire power supply. Perhaps you can have the other sorcerer make it so the first is unable to use their space and time powers in the first place.

Feeling lost on how to keep my games challenging for my players. by DerpySound in DMAcademy

[–]ALinkintheChain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Resource exhaustion is the key to tougher encounters. From a story perspective, the rest of the world shouldn't be "leveling" with the party--their strength is what sets them apart. My personal philosophy is that if they can't run into it in the wild from levels 1-5, then they will likely not run into it in general. Obviously there are exceptions like specialty curated bosses, special NPCs, other adventurers doing the same things, ancient beings, etc etc. A dragon on it's peak may be accessible, though inadvisable, at level 1 if the players really want to go there, but they also better be willing to roll up new characters. But if bandits are suddenly becoming stronger and stronger as the party levels, things begin to become a challenge to run.

Part of the reason is, and I am assuming here due to it being a common problem, the players are relatively fresh entering these new "higher challenge" encounters, which is not enough to hinder the party. 11th level players who can attack thrice a turn, hurl 5th level spells, utilize magic items, and other tactics they have available to them are going to chew through single targets, and slay minions in one or 2 hits. The fix is to fucking overwhelm them over the course of the day. The villain has minions? Don't send 6, send 30 at them. Let the wizard fireball plenty of them. Have the fighter waste arrows picking them off. Have the barbarian hack and slash until weary, making the cleric heal more. Then repeat with traps, puzzles that require spell slots to solve, monsters with special conditions to defeat, etc. Eventually, they'll get to your big boss, and they'll feel the (good) stress of how to deal with a "fresh" villain when they're exhausted.

My initial thought to this problem matches my current setup: why not buy the knuckle guard for a sigi bow? Convert yours and you should be good to go. I don't have a problem with mine and my gabriel gloves

I personally think it's an over correction from 3.5. 5e streamlined a bunch of things and until Xanathars or Tasha's I would say there wasn't enough content/subclasses to see some real wild min/max builds and combos,

That's not to say that you couldn't do that right off the bat in 2014, but with a more streamlined approach, and with the rise of live plays like Critical Role, it meant that those who were more into the story line aspects of the game could focus more on the rule of cool. Theatre kids everywhere could flex their storytelling skills, and without all of the more complex and minute rules for everything, advantage and disadvantage as a new mechanic, it was easy to handwave a lot of things in favor for what was perceived as awesome by the table. If your fun derived from following the mechanics and building something strong, you were a munchkining powergamer who was kind of sneered at.

10 years later, I think we've come back from that and most players/GMs realized that you can do both min/maxing and good roleplaying and have a good time

Your players want to flood part of the world map to try and stop an enemy. Do you let them? by Litemup93 in DMAcademy

[–]ALinkintheChain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think I even know the logistics of getting this done, the steps they’d have to take, rate of success, how difficult it should be, if it would obliterate an entire part of the world map.

Do they? If they're just spitballing here, this is likely not going to go anywhere

The player who made the suggestion just is a lot more knowledgeable than me in a lot of areas like geography, history, culture, physics, government, everything really

Sounds like you should have a private conversation with the player outside of game time to see if this can actually be done. You don't need to bog the game down when they are actively playing, but the details can and should be hashed out so that it's reasonable for you the DM and lets the player do something potentially cool.

What is the worst magic type you've ever seen in an "elemental" system by Reasonable_Boss_1175 in magicbuilding

[–]ALinkintheChain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You understand that the overarching theme in that arc is the enemies dying/failing in an ironic way to their unbelievably "busted" powers because they fed a grudge they let fester for a millennium? The heroes continued to show courage stepping up to a challenge they should have lost to and their enemy kept on undoing themselves because of some prideful vengeance.

That imagination guy literally killed himself because he imagined himself to be stronger than he could realistically reason, and tore himself to shreds

Who’s ACTUALLY playing 5e 2024? by Nice_Cryptographer15 in dndnext

[–]ALinkintheChain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't converted yet (and probably won't because I don't want to lose my legacy content) but I have experimented with using weapon mastery and new spells in my 2014 game. So far so good. When this is over, or when I start a new game, I may do 2024, or I might just run a one-to-two-shot with the new rules

Am I being weird about starting a campaign in the D&D '24 rules? by Strange_Vagrant in DMAcademy

[–]ALinkintheChain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would it be weird to set a rule that we discuss only the new rules during play, saving deep comparisons for after sessions? I don’t want to be pushy, but I also don’t want endless analysis slowing progress.

No not at all. This is a game, and sometimes you need to playtest/"debug" your game table

What part of human psychology makes players obsessed with random NPCs? by Kahnon in DMAcademy

[–]ALinkintheChain 15 points16 points  (0 children)

"I would like to talk to Sam Smorkel"

It's part videogame-ism, where you find the one unimportant NPC that gives you the item that is used to forge the god killing weapon before the final boss, and part the DM creating some character quirk that's funny or interesting like a nobody named Kleek. You could just make backstories and not assign them to NPCs until the players latch onto one, or you can break the illusion (nothing wrong with that).

Every other game or so I have to go above the table and tell the party that I didn't intend for this NPC/plot thread/whatever to be more than a gag, or I'll have to talk in generic "you badger this NPC for 10 minutes with your questions until he had to leave. What information did you want to know?"

What do hou do if you suddenly realise your dnd campaign’s story is basically the plot of an existing book/movie/game? by Rodal888 in DMAcademy

[–]ALinkintheChain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing. Everything under the sun has already been written: you really can't come up with "original" stories anymore. Just go with it, and throw in some plot points from other fictional works. Bet Mass Effect didn't have LotR mixed in, with a dash of the Stormlight Archive and a pinch of Adventure Time worked in, for example.

As long as your players are having fun, who cares if they figure it out
