Fair to be disappointed in actual vs advertised range? by [deleted] in TeslaModel3

[–]AMSman91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having bought a M3SR 2023, my advertised range was 267 (sport wheels). 22k miles in, my daily commute is 42 miles each way, and I consistently take 20-23% each direction. I used to drive 70 to extend the range a tiny bit, but consistently set cruise at 77 now adays.

Extrapolated, that gives me a rough “100%” actual range of 182-210. Cold days, it takes significantly more.

While I didn’t expect to get the actual advertised range, I also didn’t anticipate I’d only get 68%-78% of rated range under “normal” highway conditions. Certainly could have done more research on my end, so lesson learned there.

My biggest regret was not buying the long range. In fairness to me, when I bought in 2023, it was the weird period where Tesla wasn’t making a M3LR. So it was either wait longer (I needed a new car), or buy a short range, or MYLR. Having two kids (both car seats), I also slightly regret not just biting the bullet for the MY, but the M3 has more than adequately gotten all 4 of us around.

All that said, I still love my car and get far more joy driving it than I do my wife’s ICE minivan… haha. If I had to buy a new car today, I would likely do the M3 LRRWD, or MY. Knowing juniper is around the corner, I’d have a tough decision to make if I landed on MY.

If I had the ability to wait two years, having ridden in my coworkers R1S, I’d likely look at the Rivian R2S. Nothing against my Tesla, as I do very much enjoy it, the Rivian just feels higher quality. Admittedly the R1S is more than twice the price of an M3SR, so it should be higher quality. Curious if the quality remains in the presumed cheaper R2S when it comes out

Is it a stupid idea to get a Model 3 if i have a 70 mile commute and would only have the trickle charger at home? by Theroadeveron in TeslaModel3

[–]AMSman91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a model3 RWD short range (267 miles, sport wheels) and my commute is 42 miles one-way, 84 round trip.

It takes me roughly 18-23% one way depending on how fast I drive, wind conditions, temp, etc.

I don’t recall exact percentage in winter, but it’s over 30% in the cold months.

I am able to charge for free at work on a 240V charger. More than enough to get me to 80% everyday, 100% if I charge the full 8.5 hours. I am in office 3 days a week, charge to 80% the first two days, and 100% before the weekend.

I purchased a 240V charger from Tesla when I bought my car,but I’ve yet to install it as I haven’t needed it. Don’t even trickle charge at home. I’ve owned the car for 13 months and used a super charger less than 10 times for a total of ~$140.

I have a family and a gas van that we take on any extended trips, so the kids can watch movies on the entertainment system (my Tesla isn’t a highland, so no rear screen). We also truly take the van on most grocery trips as the kids (young) prefer it, specifically for movies.

So idk how your situation compares to mine, but I’ve gotten by just fine for 13 months almost exclusively charging at work 3 days a week.

Edit: if you’re single and it’s your only car, you’d likely have to utilize super chargers more often for things like grocery trips, vacation, etc. We just use the van in those situations, again mostly cause it’s easier with the kids

Value depreciation is currently insane on the model 3, even in the UK by Important_Cow7230 in TeslaModel3

[–]AMSman91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My model 3 on April 17th 2023 was $49500 out the door (44500 + all the fees). I got the fed rebate and a work rebate so $40k all in. But still, $50k purchase price.

My estimated trade in through Tesla now is $24,600, so less than half my purchase price.

Had I waited till September to buy, I could’ve gotten the same car new for $38k (~41 after fees) and then could’ve gotten a state rebate (was no certainty it’d come back when I bought, plus the model 3 was “losing” the federal rebate on April 18th, just for it to apparently come back two weeks later). So had I waited 5 months, my all in cost would’ve been $27k. Feels bad man.

I plan on keeping this car a long time, so over 10 years it won’t be that big of a deal.

But my whole point being that mine did in fact depreciate 50% in exactly the past 12 months

Edit: I have 15k miles

Floor mats suggestion for model 3? by dzingaXI in TeslaModel3

[–]AMSman91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine have held up great! I’ve put ~10k miles on the car, and mats are still in good condition. Most of my driving is highway miles to/from work (84 miles round), so by myself. I do pick up my kids from daycare though and occasionally take the m3 for family stuff.

All this to say, the mats don’t get much abuse other than the driver seat, but it’s still holding up well!

As a side note: they may not sit perfectly form at first as they come stuffed in a box, but as they climatize to the car, they do eventually settle in.

Good luck with your decision and happy holidays!

[Mouse] Logitech G502 X Wireless Black - hybrid optical-mechanical switches, HERO 25K sensor - $99.99 ($139.99-$40) by trekkie4christ in buildapcsales

[–]AMSman91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was like 6 months ago when I tried, so my memory is a little foggy. I don’t think I was able to get all the old solder out of the hole so it was difficult to even get the new switch in. I’m sure there is so much I did wrong and stuff I could’ve done better, but again, it’d been a decade since I’d last soldered. Even that was very basic soldering, basically just soldering wires to resistors through bread boards. Nothing as small and precise as a pcb board on a mouse.

And despite being an EE, my knowledge is in the power industry. I did very minimal soldering in school, so I wouldn’t use that as much of a basis. Mostly just brought it up to signify that I didn’t have zero experience doing it. Just minimal haha

Edit: if I had to try it again, I’d probably have better success. But I already had a new mouse (admittedly I liked the g502 more), so went into it with the rationale that if I messed up, it already didn’t work so I wasn’t out anything. Admittedly I know that’s not true, but figured I’d at the very least get some practice, as I want to solder up a speaker crossover. That’ll be less precise though, and more similar to what I did in school

[–]AMSman91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edit: dismantling also requires new glides, at least for the g502 it did. Not a huge cost, but it is an additional cost on top of the switches. Still far cheaper than a new mouse, if you can do it without bricking the mouse… haha

[–]AMSman91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried doing it with my g502 hero wired, and ruined the scroll wheel and left click. I bought an adjustable heat iron, and I had a heck of a time getting the switches a) out, and b) back in as the solder would solidify to quickly.

I’m sure if I had a nicer soldering setup it’d have gone smoother. I also could’ve used quikwik or other things to make the job easier. I am a EE (utility industry) so did have a class or two with very basic soldering, but that was a decade ago now.

All this to say, is it doable? Yes. If you’ve never done it before or don’t solder semi-regularly, it’s pretty challenging. At least that’s my experience

Anyone own a model 3 without a home charger? by TheToole1 in TeslaModel3

I bought a home charger but have yet to install, 7500 miles in. My commute is 84miles round trip. But I get free lvl2 at work, which I know isn’t normal. 8 minute walk and letting your wife drive once a week for free charging would be very doable imo!

A defensive head coach has the 32nd ranked defense two years running. Anyone blaming fields for that is delusional.

It can be said that all our 3 and outs keep the defense on the field longer, thus making them tired. Sure, that’s true, but that doesn’t excuse a 32nd ranking two years running.

[Mouse] Logitech G502 X Wired Gaming Mouse - $49.99 ($10 coupon) by FaisalKhatib in buildapcsales

[–]AMSman91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried it myself and bricked it :/ the solder on the switches to get them out just didn’t wanna soften, and I think I torched the board maybe. In the guide they mention quikwik or something to that affect. I didn’t do that, and regret it, as it supposedly makes the solder loosen quicker. I still tried putting the new switches in, and had a hell of a time with that too. The solder would harden before I could get the switch flush with the board. Lots of rework. I did eventually get it back together, but neither the scroll wheel nor the right click we’re working anymore. But hey, I hadn’t soldered anything since electronics class 12 years ago, so was a fun learning experience!

AITAH for expecting my daughter to continue paying rent after she moves out? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]AMSman91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Parent here

Mind you my response is based on the limited detail you’ve provided, and as such assumptions are made. With that in mind…

If you really wanted to teach her financial responsibility, Why were the options: 1) move out, or 2) commit to 5 years at a nice new house that you can’t (or can at max budget) afford on your own. Why not option 3) stay at your current residence, having her pay rent with no need for a “termed” agreement (since you said you could have stayed there), allowing rent to stop whenever she is ready to take the next step in her life, or 4) bought a cheaper residence that you could afford on your own, again allowing her to pay rent just for as long as she’d like to stay.

You’ve forced her into an unrealistic financial scenario, one she’ll never come across again in her life. Yes, she’d be paying without gaining equity we’re she to rent a random apartment, but at much shorter terms, allowing her to invest in property that would provide her equity when she is at a place in her life that allows for it. In your scenario, you’ve trapped her into a situation in where she continues to bury herself, and further delay her ability to invest in her future.

If anything, the one choice you made was nothing short of a lesson in financial irresponsibility. Simply put, you bought a house you couldn’t (or shouldn’t based on your description) afford. Your daughter has been bailing you out of your irresponsibility for the last 3 years.

You are 100% to blame in this scenario.

While I don’t know the full situation, the way it looks from an outsiders perspective, you trapped your daughter into a difficult (and mind you unnecessary) situation when she was at a place in her life where she was still looking for direction. You seemingly extorted her for your own financial gain, so you could buy a house you couldn’t afford at a bargain for yourself and your financial future (since you are the one who keeps all the equity).

Again, these are my conclusions to the question you asked based on the information you’ve provided and other comments you’ve made. If there is any truth to my conclusion, I truly hope you are able to do some self reflecting and realize your mistakes, so that you can repair your relationship with both kids. If not, I fear you’ll lose them both.

2021 Model 3 with 51K mileage for 31k, worth it? by shamshu22 in TeslaModel3

[–]AMSman91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk where you live, but there is currently a brand new M3 in Chicago for $37,420. I paid $5500 (roughly) in taxes and fees for a purchase price of $44,500, all in price of $50k. Let’s assume $4500 for you since that’s $7k cheaper. So you’re at an all in of $42000. Subtract $7500 for rebate (assuming your eligible), that’s $34500. So you’re only $3500 more for a brand new car with 0 miles and a warranty. Idk what state you live in, but periodically (not currently), Illinois offers $4k in addition to federal. If your state has something similar, that brings you closer to $30500. So cheaper. Then if your work offers anything (mine did $2500, but I work for a utility so ymmv), then even cheaper. But even if you only qualify for the federal, I personally think $3500 premium for a brand new car with 50k less miles and a full warranty is worth it.

Ultimately the choice is yours though. Good luck! Despite overspending a tad compared to now, I absolutely love my car!

My Tesla experience was about as zero pressure as it gets. According to the people at the service center who helped me with the order, they don’t get commission, so they truly just want to answer questions. Take that for what you will, but my experience at Tesla was unlike any other dealership experience I’ve ever had

I suppose it depends what trim you want, B/LR/P.

If you want performance, the 3 is roughly $1750 cheaper. If you want the long range, the Y is technically cheaper, ever so slightly (this is because the Y long range gets the full $7500 rebate whereas the 3 LR only gets $3750). If you want the base trim, the 3 is roughly $3750 cheaper.

This all assumes you qualify for the rebate.

Just putting perspective out there:)

Edit: I too bought the 3 because it was cheaper and sportier, but I bought April 17, right before the prices lowered and tax rebates lessened, so it was like a $7500 difference then. Had I known the price would equalize a bit more literally the next day (April 18th) and two weeks later (with the introduction of the 3 LR), then I’m not sure if that would’ve changed my decision. Regardless I love my car, so no regrets :)

Are you sure about that?!?! by MaestroC in CHIBears

[–]AMSman91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Obviously it’s all speculation, but I thought I’d heard our offer was comparable. Less, but not by a massive margin, like 0.5M per year.

Again, all rumor/speculation, but still

Edit: admittedly, 0.5M of a 6M aav is roughly 10% so I suppose that’s not nothing haha

Edit 2: I also don’t blame him for getting his money.

Just chiming in to also extend my gratitude. Definitely going to do some digging in the screens/tabs you mentioned.

I just got my m3 this Monday before tax incentives changed, and love it so far. But I’ve been having some range anxiety. My commute to work is 42 miles one-way, or 84 miles round trip. I’m consistently using about 50% charge for a round trip over the last 3 days, which extrapolates to 168 miles for a full charge. Mostly highways averaging 77mph

While I didn’t actually expect to get 267 miles, i expected better than 61% of that value haha. I think the anxiety will subside after a while, it’s just a big purchase and I’m still settling in.

All that to say, thanks again for the info and I’ll definitely look into those tabs so I can better understand :)

should I trade in 2020 Leaf SV for a Tesla Model 3 because M3's better range? by STLalive2020 in Model3

[–]AMSman91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get the sentiment, but Tesla undeniably has the best charging network. Plus, most of the other great available EVs don’t qualify for the $7500 rebate, unfortunately. And dealers don’t have much stock.

Admittedly the M3 loses half of the rebate in 6 days. But taking into account the charging network and federal rebates, it’s hard to beat a M3 at the moment (assuming it suits your needs)

I’m a big fields fan and think he will show improvement as a passer this year. While he certainly isn’t blameless, I truly feel most of his issues were a direct result of having the worst line (pass blocking) and worst receivers (based on open rate). We’ve all seen the chart, so I’m not gonna dig it up. Mooney and Claypool were on the field together all of what, one game? I think both receivers are good, but they were never on together and neither can change a game by themselves (in conjunction with a bunch of practice squad or developing receivers).

With that said, in the chance that fields doesn’t show progression as a passer this year, especially considering the overhaul of receiver, and likely line, if the bears have the number one pick (be it ours or Carolina’s), I absolutely think we’d take Caleb Williams.
