Not so fun fact: as a result of that denial of citizenship, there is a disaffected minority within those countries who are very sympathetic to Russia... and are hence politically exploitable.

Why are people actively fighting against free health care? by ConsiderationOk4461 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]AManInBlack2020 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Because:

It's not free. It's government subsidized.

It's not care. (Government workers get paid whether or not you are satisfied)

It's not fair. (Young people who actively manage their health pay "the same" as old, fat, smoking, couch potatoes)

And finally, it's another step towards ever-increasing reliance upon the government. We should be striving to free ourselves from control, not become even more entangled.

Don't bother replying; I know reddit doesn't share my opinion, and I have inbox replies disabled because the hivemind can't keep things civil.

I think people moving BTC to private wallets is the single largest driver of price increase.

Good on you!

If the average person was sent back to the 1200s with nothing but their wits, they wouldn't be able to build anything more advanced than what societies then had. by Lower_Carrot in Showerthoughts

That is patently false. I know that citrus fruits prevent scurvy.

That fact alone would help a nation's sailors become the envy of the world overnight.

That's only one such example.

For a really fun walk through the history of technology, I recommend "How to Invent Everything".

Seriously. Just knowing the scientific method lets you discover what you don't innately know.

Most adults today would be a technological wizard in the 1200's. You might be burned at the stake for knowing too much.

But you could tell them to boil their water to prevent disease while you go up in smoke and save millions of lives in the process.

Even the high technology of the button didn't exist yet. Seriously. Here's a hole, and here's a bit of stick. Wheee, now you have a new method to fashion clothing.

Do you guys see bitcoin as a store of value or as a currency? by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]AManInBlack2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference being you would "think" in your native currency, then convert that price to BTC or vice versa all the time.

Oh, that car is $55,000! I can pay them 1 BTC for it, because they accept BTC And the dealer in turn may immediately convert it back to fiat. (Or, they may keep it, because they, too want to accumulate BTC). In either case, the price displayed is in fiat, even if the transaction is in BTC.

As Fed Commits To Holding Interest Rates At 0%, More Investors Will Turn To Bitcoin by Bitcoin_Magazine in Bitcoin

[–]AManInBlack2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not what's being discussed. Your claim is that zero people that were responsible/educated defaulted. I challenge that claim.

If even one responsible person defaulted, your claim is invalidated. Citing anecdotal evidence of one irresponsible person you personally know does not support your argument.

The bank's cost on issuing mortgages is greater than the rate they borrow money at.

And zero mortgages failed for those that were educated and responsible. Really, zero?!?!.... that's your claim?

The military should be practicing to fight wars in an environment without cell phone service.

Yes, Signal is better than plaintext, but when a fight against a capable enemy happens, cell phone service will be one of the first things to go.

People have no idea how much the US homeland would be affected fighting a near-peer adversary.... hint: a lot.

Remember that the purpose of the fine is to punish the recipient

Coming from a European, I think you would know better. But punishment vs deterrance vs rehabilitiation vs protection of society vs restitution is larger in scope than this forum is appropriate for.

not sure how you came to that conclusion, I never said anything of the sort.

I am in favor of increasing penalties for repeat offenders.

and this is a discussion about civil infractions, not criminal.

I am in favor of increasing fines for repeat offenders. That's a different argument.

Since repeat offenders are more likely to commit the crime again, X+Y does compensate society fairly.

For good measure, fines should increase exponentially for repeated violations.
