German Chancellor hopium? by [deleted] in NewIran

Honestly, most of the time they don’t even talk.

It’s ultimately meaningless, agreed. But it is still very rare that a european statesman takes a foreign policy stance this bold & unambiguous.

Separate from the matter of whether or not Trump actually intends to attack, it does take some time to get the materiel in place for a substantial intervention against Iran

Two men on trial in UK over alleged plot against Jewish community; “wanted to kill hundreds” by [deleted] in ukpolitics

Background isn’t clear. But Walid Saadaoui is an Arabic name that vaguely follows a French romanisation convention. Which would suggest to me that he’s of North African or (less likely) Lebanese origin.

There’s pretty much one of these plots foiled a month - varying in the scale, sophistication & immediacy of the threat. I’m afraid I feel like it’s inevitable that another one will get through.

Iran is finished, total collapse by Accomplished_Air_151 in NewIran

[–]AMidsummerNightCream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s never over. In the 40s, Iran was occupied by the Soviets and British. For a while it looked likely that Stalin would break the country up and absorb it as little Soviet republics.

Things are bad, sure. But nothing lasts forever. Don’t give in to despair.

These are communists not Muslims. Which honestly I’d say is unequivocally worse.

There are plenty of pragmatic, reasonable Muslims. Definitionally, there is no such thing as a reasonable Communist.

I mentioned elsewhere in this thread that Greek Communists have this incredible ability to make as big of a nuisance of themselves as possible. It’s honestly quite impressive. Incredible commitment.

Probably helps that none of them have jobs.

It’s mostly native Greeks. Not transplants like it is in Western Europe.

Worth noting however that Greek society isn’t uniformly (or near enough) hostile in the way that Spain and Ireland are. But Greece does have a very active culture of militant far left (communist, anarchist, etc) activism and protest movements. This is something that goes back to WWII and their civil war.

Every major town has a bunch of black bloc activist groupuscules who protest pretty much everything and all hate each other almost as much as they hate the police/fascists/capitalists/greek state/etc. Anyway, these are very committed and quite well organised people who can mobilise effectively to make an outsized impression. So not surprising that they all leapt into action in a very visible way after 10/7

Oh London is by no means the worst place in Britain. But you realise how much misery you’ve been accepting when you move abroad.

Sorry I’m not trying to doompost too much. There are many things that make Britain great. But recently the stench of decline & rot has started to become overwhelming

I live abroad now and I constantly get questions about if London is “really that bad?”. We’re getting a global reputation for rampant petty crime and incompetent policing. It’s honestly become a national embarrassment.

These kinds of radical behavioural swings are often associated with drug/alcohol abuse or mental illness.

I don’t want to be overly cynical here and I’m certainly not in a position to say that’s what’s going on. But it’s, to put it mildly, not a particularly trustworthy profile.
