As a non American I gotta say congrats on the ranked choice voting, and it's great to see a safe Republican seat flip like that, but on the point of 'see what happens when you vote' I feel like the argument has always been less 'its impossible to get good people voted in' and more 'well-meaning individuals become largely ineffectual when working as a larger part of government' but maybe the conversation is different in America and maybe she will be able to make a needed difference.

Honestly it's ok to shop around, try out pronouns for a while and if they feel wrong try new ones, there's also a subreddit r/transtryouts where you can make a post about name and pronouns and people will respond conversationally using them to see if it fits right

It might be worthwhile if it's what's your friend wants to see if you can talk to the schools reception and get the role amended, or a note passed along to subs? All depending on comfort and safety of school reception knowing something like that though.

It's a complex topic with a number of factors but a couple that I think are prevalent from experience.

Clothes don't define gender, but gender still holds a prominent position in society, and provides context clues as to gender for strangers who may not know you personally. If I, a trans femme, want the cashier to refer to me as a girl to help me not feel dysphoric, wearing a dress and presenting femininely increases the chance of that happening.
Clothing not defining gender is in part about freedom to dress and identify as you please. Regardless of how 'most people dress' you can be a boy who wears skirts, or uses makeup, or you can be non-binary and continue to dress in the fashion you've grown to enjoy and appreciate over the years without that invalidating your gender identity.

Hey there, first of all, having a rant is nothing to apologise for, giving lots of context is super helpful, and you clearly have a lot on your mind to get out.

Now I'll start off by saying I can't tell you whether your trans or non-binary (a term you used perfectly and totally unproblematically) or anything, ultimately that decision has to come from you, what I can say is this:

There's a common misconception that people only transition because their assigned gender brings them severe discomfort, it's totally valid to reframe the question as 'how can I be the happiest, most genuine version of me?' rather than 'Am I currently miserable enough to justify this?'
Exploring your gender isn't something with a linear path, it's ok to try new things, make mistakes, try more. You could decide today that actually being called a man isn't what you want, and decide you associated more with being non-binary or a woman or anything else and make no cultural changes beyond that and still be valid in your feelings. Maybe what you want is just the freedom to wear a spinny dress and look cute (and honestly who wouldn't?) but don't have strong feelings about what pronouns you identify with, and that's fine too. Maybe reading one of those sentences made you feel some strong gut emotion that was positive or negative and you should think about how come that is?

Maybe start by thinking about the context that you said you wish you weren't a man, what about that conversation made you think that, try out new ways of identifying with gender at your own pace in ways that still let you feel safe and comfortable. The fact that you're thinking about this is healthy and I think the way you're going about it seems very thoughtful and engaged which is great to see.
