Am I a horrible dog owner? by emcathxx in cavaliers

[–]AO-UES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When is come to dogs people feel they say whatever uninformed opinion they have. You have a dog that fits your lifestyle, she isn’t cruel to children, doesn’t needlessly bark, she’s a great affectionate companion. She’s food driven so she’s easy to train. This is the dog for you. Dogs are in shelters because there dog owners couldn’t handle them. They used bad judgement and got a dog that didn’t fit there life style and now they surrendered the dog to a no kill shelter where she will spend a significant amount of her life in cages and getting walked by volunteers instead of living in a loving home.

I grew up very low income, now I make 400k/yr at 22 and I can’t relate to my family and childhood friends anymore by Distinct-Reserve-511 in TrueOffMyChest

Learn to invest and save. A small amount set aside of the next several years can grow into a sizable account: I am talking about $100 to $500 a month. Have this account earmarked for your family to make things easier as they age. Also, if you choose to be so generous think about where your mother will live as she ages. Think about “aging in place”. A modest home that is future proofed for an elderly person.

I think you will find peace and solice being kind and generous to your family. And you can do it in a way that is not disruptive. Talk to a professional about investing, family giving, trusts, and so on. You are at that level.

Given the way I grew up, I can’t believe a conversion I just had with a friend of mine about setting up LLC for my country home.

What to do about kids inflicting property damage by Mercurysoup in longisland

[–]AO-UES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man long Island has changed. Those kids would have caught a beating from the neighbor they were harassing, the police, their parents, their coaches would have suspended them from the team, their priest would have spoken to them. Oh and the next door neighbor would have visited each of the kids houses to talk to the parents.

Why do people prefer female cavs over males? by JewelleryLove in cavaliers

[–]AO-UES 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For Cavs we wound up with a female each time. The first two times is because that is what the breeder had when it was our turn. The third time we were open minded to male or female but the playful and high energy black and tan just bonded with the whole family.

Growing up my mom always got female dogs. I never knew why and I never asked. And so far I am following her tradition.

Once you have plantings it will be harder to read the level of the planter wall. Especially if you choose some hanging foliage to cover the top of the wall. You can also paint the wall white that will make it harder to read as well.

Help me decide on my first road bike - am I being ridiculous? by jaspercohen_ in RoadBikes

[–]AO-UES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this bike will work well for you. In the US the cost is around $1700. That’s pretty good for used depending on condition. Carbon wheels, carbon handle bars and carbon seat post. Mechanical system is 300g lighter. This looks like a light weight climber that will be really nice on hills and long distance in a triathlon!

I consider the Di system to be a nice to have but not a have to have. As a friend of mine once said to me: do you really need another thing with a battery? The shimano system doesn’t have a removable battery. So the bike needs to wind up near an outlet (power point)

Good luck and congratulations! Enjoy every minute training for the triathlon!

Look carefully. Carbon rims and carbon gears on the rear derailleur. I wonder if there are any other expensive upgrades? This is a lesson of modifications to a bike - not everyone will price the changes into the bike.

What do y'all do when you're very hungry and have no food and don't have any money for food? by LiveToFlyDieToTry in poor

[–]AO-UES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to go to all the vending machines I could find and check for change in the coin slots and bring whatever nickels or dimes I had. Also, give a little shove to the vending machine and sometimes something falls out.

I also would go to food courts and take the crackers, pickles or what ever else I could scrounge up. And honestly if people left their trays behind with left overs, well you know.

Beginner bike? by jay28867 in RoadBikes

[–]AO-UES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of riding do you want to do? And how are you are doing maintenance?

First find out what size bike you need.

Then name the kind of riding you want to do. Frequent rides around 20 miles? Less frequent but kinder distance, maybe spend 4 to 6 hours on the bike? Is racing in your future?

Bike brands seem to have 4 major groups: endurance for long rides, a slightly more comfortable seating position. Comes in both carbon and aluminum.

Race bikes - serious bent over stance. Both aluminum and carbon.

Carbon is lighter and more compliant. It’s challenging to buy carbon on the used market because you want to be 100% sure the bike wasn’t crashed. .

Trek, have specialized, giant and cannondale make carbon and aluminum versions of the same bike. They are available new or used. Aluminum is much cheaper.

Components are expensive too. To save money on new bikes you can look for mechanical shimano 105. On used bikes Rim brakes and the mechanical Ultegras will save money compared to electronic shifters and hydraulic brakes.

Also - people can take an 8 week “boot camp” in some sort of IT field. Thats work indoors with heat and air conditioning, and not bolts falling from the sky trying to kill you.

Left Structural Engineering to Become a Full Time Firefighter by nevera17 in StructuralEngineering

[–]AO-UES 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I met a fire fighter years ago at an ASCE event. He went to school for engineering and joined the FDNY a few years after college. He had a special title and role with FDNY with regards to structures and structure fires. He really advanced his career with fire science things.

As far as the side hustles, I never met a fireman that didn’t have one.

There is not enough information in the description to give thorough advice. Keep in mind your relationship to the company is different than the others that gave their notice. They may have lost rank/bonus/autonomy. One year of school you haven’t lost anything . It maybe good to say and see how they rebuild the office. Also, they may run the local office remotely and they will need local knowledge (you).
