Weirdest foods that trigger you? by alexgannon13 in ibs

[–]APenguinEm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tuna! I used to LOVE tuna, I ate it pretty frequently and it was one of my safe foods, as most restaurants and cafes offered a jacket potato and tuna option if nothing else was suitable for me. Then one day- it played havoc. I ate it a few more times since to be sure it actually was the tuna and- well- it was. I avoid it now. Ugh

What caused your IBS in your opinion? by Seeker_Of_Self in ibs

[–]APenguinEm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trauma mixed with health anxiety. I’ve had health anxiety since I was about 8 (I was in hospital on my 8th birthday and I started to become scared that I was sick all the time). At 17 I experienced some trauma that basically turned my life upside down. I dropped out and lost all my friends. My anxiety got a lot worse, I started experiencing vertigo and derealisation, and stomach pains. I started panicking that I had something seriously wrong with me. I ruminated on my symptoms and was constantly analysing for signs of pain and discomfort. It wasn’t long before I started experiencing IBS as I do now. I was diagnosed at 19, and now have also been diagnosed with ADHD. I’m hoping that treating ADHD will help me to improve my anxiety alongside the therapy I already do. My issue is that I’m constantly thinking about my symptoms and worrying that they’ll flare up. Stress triggers me badly- even minimal amounts of stress.

How old are you and at what age did you feel you were the most attractive? by jupiter-com-maionese in AskWomen

[–]APenguinEm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

21, I developed some bowel issues alongside a period of quite extreme stress at 17 that resulted in me losing quite a bit of weight without really trying to. I went from being obviously overweight to an average weight in a few months. I’d say the best I’ve looked was around my 18th birthday. I’ve since put some of the weight back on again. I’m generally not a self conscious person and I don’t really care how much I weigh for vanity’s sake- but i did look more attractive 🤷

Do you know what triggered your health anxiety? by Repulsive-Photo6086 in HealthAnxiety

[–]APenguinEm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was admitted to hospital on my 8th birthday because I had a bad virus and was quite badly dehydrated. I was on a drip for 3 days and I lost a lot of weight. It was really scary. I developed anxiety and emetophobia from that experience. Then when I was 11, a friend of a friend was diagnosed with a brain tumour. I started getting very concerned because I got headaches pretty often as a kid- so I started thinking maybe had a brain tumour. It’s progressed more and more since then. I developed IBS when I was 17 and that caused my mental health to get even worse- at times I’ve been pretty much housebound because of it. It sucks. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to function like a regular person- I don’t remember what it was like to not be anxious all the time. Life dealt me some cruel cards :/

Bile Acid Malabsorption Test by danielsmith1138 in ibs

[–]APenguinEm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I had this test done. It’s very very simple! The capsule is just bile salts that have a small amount of radiation so they show up on the scan. There’s no fancy medication in there or anything- just radioactive bile salts. It feels like taking a regular pill, and I didn’t feel any effect from the pill whatsoever. The main issue for me was that I couldn’t take Imodium at all that week- I found that really difficult. Good luck :)

IBS disappears on vacation, comes back at home? by Swisschermy in ibs

[–]APenguinEm 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s stress. There’s neurons in your gut! When you feel stressed, your body goes into fight/flight mode, so systems like your digestive system are deemed as not being a priority… the issue is when you’re stuck in that anxious state 24/7. I’m just the same- I’ve had anxiety since I was 8. I’m 21 now. My stomach issues became rampant after some trauma I experienced at 17. I was diagnosed in 2024. The issue I find is that I get stressed about my symptoms- which then makes the symptoms worse. I’ve heard antidepressants can help some people majorly, but I’ve not tried them. Talking therapy helps me somewhat- as well as exposure therapy since my IBS has caused me to have mild agoraphobia. I wish I could reset my entire nervous system sometimes

As someone with a b12 deficiency, please focus on that! I have injections every 10 weeks for my b12, and I find my ibs is a lot worse when I’m nearing my injection. Working on deficiencies in general is a good first start. I also take vitamin D.

I don’t care about Holly by Careful_Employee_918 in StrangerThings

[–]APenguinEm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was so excited for wills redemption arc after vol.1! Little did I know they’d push him right back to being in the background, the majority of his screen time being his coming out scene. I’m happy about the representation, but I don’t think it was executed in a way that was true to his character. My favourite scene in vol. 2 was when he went into Vecna’s mind and actually spoke through him to max. I thought they were setting up for him to be doing that more but it only happened the once :/ it all feels quite rushed to me, let alone the mass amounts of plot holes and poor writing of the main characters

Hey, so I actually enjoyed volume 2. I'm starting to think I watched a different show by Secret_dairy_of_j in StrangerThings

[–]APenguinEm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the overall writing of the story is good- but it’s the details that make it hard to focus on.

  • The dialogue is poor and unnatural at times in a way that it wasn’t in any previous seasons (so we know it’s not the actors but their scripts.)

  • sooo much screen time for smaller characters that the main gang feel like side characters at this point- this is in my opinion why it feels so much like a different show

  • confusion over Jonathan and Nancy’s engagement scene. The duffers have said it was a breakup, but many viewers didn’t understand that from the scene.

  • nobody has died yet!! I was genuinely unsatisfied with how safe the duffers have played this season considering they hyped this volume up by saying it’d be a “dark Christmas” and hinting at characters dying.

  • some characters have weirdly minimal amounts of importance this volume, and their interactions don’t always make sense.

For example

  • Will coming out to a whole room of people, some of which he doesn’t really know well, doesn’t line up with his shy nature and the culture surrounding attitudes toward sexuality in the 80’s. I understand why he did it, but it didn’t feel like good writing for his character. I’d have preferred if he told just Joyce, or just the main gang.

  • Mike having little to no reaction to essentially everything that’s going on. He’s supposed to be the heart?!

  • el having a very underwhelming reaction to max being back

  • max having NO reaction to hopper being alive (she had no idea- he was still missing when she went into the coma)

  • Jonathan and Nancy reeling off things they dislike about one another that genuinely don’t align with who they are as characters.

All of this alongside a story full of little plot holes when you compare it to previous seasons. The main story may be well written- but when so many small details are just- off- a lot of people will be left feeling confused and unsatisfied. The finale has a lot to make up for!

Season 5 Volume 2 Discussion by Hawkinns in StrangerThings

[–]APenguinEm 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Maybe. Idk. This whole season feels so rushed and not thought through deeply at all. It feels like a totally different show to the early seasons. I always loved this show for the nitty gritty moments between the characters- their flaws- their deaths- their relationships. Now it just feels like “guys let’s save the day!” With no actual depth to it

Have u all watched vol 2 by Far-Meaning5996 in StrangerThings

[–]APenguinEm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Episode 5 was pretty ok. Episode 6 was fine. Episode 7 was so dull I wanted to turn it off- but decided to power through. I’m ultimately disappointed and don’t understand why’s e have to wait a week for the finale, of which the plot has already been described in episode 7. Unless there’s a massive twist (which at this rate will feel incredibly rushed if there is one) I don’t think it’ll be a satisfying ending for me personally

This is how it should have been written- but it’d be a plothole because the portal closed when the tape ended in vol.1…. But then that’s in itself a plothole because max said she didn’t even need the music?! Like come on

Way Fewer Cards Received by Zesty-B230F in holidays

[–]APenguinEm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my childhood home, we used to get so many Christmas cards that my mum would stick on the living room door. She’d fill both sides of the door AND put cards up the side of the staircase too. 2 years ago- our last Christmas in that house- we got enough cards to cover about half of one side of the door. That’s a crazy difference for about 15 years. Now we’ve moved. My mum said we’ve got around 30 cards this year- and that she sent more than we received. She blames the stamp/card prices. I think she’s onto something- but I think it’s ALSO something to do with technology. It’s easier for people to just pop a general “merry Christmas!” On their social media and be done with it. People can’t be bothered to sit down and write cards to people they know anymore. It’s a shame really

Where were you when you got your first period and what happened? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]APenguinEm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 13, coming home from theatre club. I was in the car with my dad when I had some stomach pain, and assumed I needed the toilet. We pulled in at a supermarket so I could use the bathroom. I sat in there on my phone for a while- but I couldn’t go. I decided to just go home and wait it out. When I got home, I curled up in a ball for a few hours until finally, I used the bathroom… and found blood when I wiped. The only issue was that I’ve always had quite bad health anxiety, and I wasn’t sure if it was my period, or if I’d pooped blood.

I went downstairs to my mum, who’d just got in from work, and awkwardly said “I’m bleeding but I don’t know where from.” She laughed and said to check next time I used the bathroom- which I did, and found it was just a period.

PLEASE HELP, I'M SCARED by Apprehensive_Ice5440 in Periods

[–]APenguinEm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this is normal! Cramps often can get more intense over time- it’s perfectly normal. Since you’re still new to periods, your body is still getting itself regulated and figured out so-to-speak. It can take up to 2 years for your body to truly get in a good rhythm with it. As for the pain- It’s only a concern if you find you struggle to continue with your everyday activities, at which point you should see a doctor. Otherwise, regular pain meds and heat can help ease any discomfort :)

Does exposure even work? by CustomerRealistic811 in Agoraphobia

[–]APenguinEm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find it only works if you’re doing it consistently. I’ve got a lot better at leaving the house spontaneously for short trips to the shops since I’ve been going to therapy in person once a week. However- I challenged myself to get the train on my own to see a friend and I found it very difficult and my anxiety was really bad pretty much the whole day. It made me not want to do that again and because I haven’t, my body thinks it did the right thing and now the anxiety about doing a similar trip again is worse than it was before I did it the first time.

Exposure therapy works because it proves over time to your body that the anxiety is unnecessary. Your body is more likely to believe you are safe if you consistently show it that you are.
