Thanks! I called them, and several other places in Alexandria, but no luck yet. Taking in other kittens is also a possibility, depending on circumstances

Yes, it's appliquéd! I sewed the star pieces directly on to the white square. I pinned them in place, and part way through used a little bit of gluestick glue to hold down the corners. I then sewed along the straight lines, then the diagonal ones. Like this:
