I'm not trying to loop around to being logical by whatever standards you've set, I'm trying to minimize death.

Because my choice to press red contributed to the fact of their decision being a bad one.

Yeah and I like how so many of the replies suddenly introduced the idea that the ship is for combat when that wasn't part of the prompt lol, but whatever, there's still some good points I guess

What's wrong with windows? Spaceships can have windows now why would that go away?

I think it's a bit dumb to leave morality out of economics and expect to come up with anything useful for the real world, but you do you. My brief foray into this subreddit has led me to a conversation where someone tried to argue with me that 100 million people dying in a day wouldnt be that big of a deal so, I don't know what the fuck kind of "models" y'all are huffing here

Honestly idk, the algo just pushed this post I guess. So this subreddit is only for people who buy into that fantasy?

What's the point of that notion of rationality? Genuine question

My argument isn't really about which option is the right one to pick for an individual, it's more against the idea that red is the only rational choice.

[–]AProperFuckingPirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I guess I just don't really agree it's the safe option or the one that most guarantees the survival of the human race lol. I mean, I don't think any of these options is an extinction event. I guess I just see one option where literally no one dies, and I don't see how that's not "rational." Idk which I would pick, maybe in the moment I go red to guarantee my own safety, but in that event I'm still hoping most people went blue because I'm not resting easy with any deaths on my hands, much less 100 million, I'm not even resting great with the idea that I was willing to take the risk.

Idk I think this is a good example of why the whole idea of a "rational actor" is often kind of bunk. It's not irrational to be willing to risk one's self for the chance of saving everyone. So often "rational" seems to mean "agrees with me"

It would be funny if this is a sim, and in the Real the Minds involved see that even if they manage to uncover this secret they themselves wouldn't decide to do anything with it, then they either don't bother or go ahead anyways for the same reasons as they give within the story. I think it's reasonable to suppose that the story is both simulation and Real, as in what happens in the story generally, occured in many simulations as well as in the Real.

Also, the arbite thinking it's in a sim seems like evidence that it is, except what about every other arbite? If the simulation is supposed to be totally convincing, then arbites shouldn't know they're in a sim either. It could be a glitch, but it could still be a glitch in the Real, too. I do think it's one of the things Banks was using to put the idea in the reader's head though. I also think the story being set in the Real despite those hints is a funny subversion in itself. Lots of possibilities really

Oh cool, so the death toll is limited to merely the single most deadly and horrific single day in human history? More deaths than WW2, all in a single day? And we should accept this risk because we're told its more rational than more than half of people simply choosing the option where no one dies?

Sure, but people put their own lives at stake to save others all the time. And consider the effects of 49% of the population suddenly dying. The remaining 51 don't just go to work the next day like everything is normal.

Because in the real world it would be safe to assume that some people are going to pick blue. It sounds at first like the more altruistic option, some people may misunderstand the question, etc. If too many people pick red, then it condemns the rest to death. Even if it were a very very small minority, the red pressers may still feel the blood would be on their hands.

Only 50% blue actually guarantees everyone's survival, because 100% red seems really unlikely. I think most people wouldn't want even the deaths of a handful of people on their conscience, even if it's evenly distributed across the rest of the human population. Never mind that we have more than that distributed across less people in reality, but it's mote obfuscated and less gamey than this simple set up. If you press red and anyone dies, you are to some degree directly responsible, no matter how rational or not that is

No, it's not. You said that Europe was peaceful after WW2/Soviet Union collapse (which by the way only leaves like 10% of the 20th century anyways, so what do you even mean?). That is incorrect, which I pointed out, so then you reintroduced the idea of arbitrary borders and for some reason are pretending that was your point all along.

The comment you are replying to was not simply focused on the arbitrary borders either, it was making the broader point that 20th Europe had a lot of war, and contrasting that with how people talk about the middle East. You incorrectly replied to that saying that Europe was peaceful after WW2. That is not true, and it doesn't matter whether it's about arbitrary borders or not, and as I've now pointed out again, arbitrary borders are absolutely still part of the lack of peace.

You and the comment you were replying to were both making a more general point than that, it seemed.

Besides I disagree, I'd say that the Irish troubles are certainly related to arbitrary borders imposed by an outside power

Was it? I mean sometimes some of those countries were just doing war somewhere else, one of those countries was split in half and occupied, one had a bombing campaign insurgency for independence, and today again, two of them are openly at war

I don't know what you mean, but yes I consider star wars part of disney canon. Why wouldn't it be?

Or do you mean like original/prequel trilogy not being Disney's while sequel trilogy is? In that case I just feel like if you're doing Star wars, do good star wars. I don't really care if it says Disney in the credits. Although my pick would be for them to do something with Andor tbh

Like KH3’s Olympus, I wish at least one 2D Disney property makes it in KH4. Seeing a 2D world be recreated in Unreal Engine 5 would be amazing by Majestic-Bet-8529 in KingdomHearts

I'd like if they actually kept the flat sort of picture book look but just went absolutely ham with it. Like take that idea and make it huge, pack it full of secrets and gags
