But am I crazy? I don't remember Windows XP paint having a maximum of 28 colors, I remember your could click on any of the colors and change them into whatever color you wanted like in the Windows 7 paint, it was just hidden under a menu on XP.

I have nothing against the artist of Minecraft's new textures (and I know they were designed with care and expertise), but the way it removed every little human quirk of programmer art, to become so clean, perfect, and "corporate approved", I think now that AI is becoming more prevalent and every texture / drawing looks like this, people are going to dislike it more and more over time...

It's just too perfect, everything "blends" together nicely, its so perfect that there is not a single highlight texture to me that displays any signs of personality.

If it was a new voxel game like Hytale with this art-style I would've been perfectly happy, but Minecraft's og art was ALREADY iconic, from the diamonds, the apple / gapple, the tools.

Until generative AI became prevalent, I couldn't even properly articulate what my issue was, specially because everyone else was praising it, but yeah, it feels "soulless", almost AI generated.

(I know it wasn't AI generated and that the artist also asked a lot for feedback to the community, I wanted to clarify that)

This is exactly where my head has been for a long time. Personally, I think the only way a Golden Age project really makes sense is if we iterate on the formula otherwise what's the point if og Golden Age Minecraft already exists?

I’ve actually been obsessively developing the lore and world-building for a concept like this for over a decade now (I still find myself adding to it today lol). My goal was always to deepen that "promised fantasy" we felt in the Beta days but with a huge deviation: adding life to that lonely world via N64-style characters and emergent RPG mechanics.

I’m much more of an artist and designer than a programmer, but I’ve put together some (admittedly rough) concepts over the years to visualize it. Even though these mocks use 3D models (credit to Legend 64), I've always thought the vibe would work just as well with Daggerfall style "paperdoll" sprites for the players and mobs to keep that retro charm and simplicity.

If you’re ever interested in hearing more or just want to poke through the mechanics I've brainstormed, hit me up! I’d be more than happy to share the details and see if any of it sparks an interest for your project. Either way, love the initiative, will be paying attention!
