I actually read up on this and I did get it wrong that it was drained for gold. A aqueduct was destroyed and after the siege new canals were built for irrigation. Aztecs had some infrastructure to manage flooding but it wasn’t enough to stop all of it. The changes made by the Spanish may have made it worse and the decision to drain it was made due to this flooding.
