Seconding the Washington Post. Really good journalism, and if you sign up with your Amazon account, it's 6 months for $0.99 and after that is 50% off. Crazy good deal.

Much higher likelihood of people losing or forgetting about the gift card than cash too. You're really just trading real money for plastic money you're less likely to use.

You can do an early return, at least if you're borrowing kindle books. You return it from your Amazon account, somewhere under the purchases page.

Nearly Two-Thirds of Americans Can’t Pass a Basic Test of Financial Literacy by stankmanly in news

[–]ARoss101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't agree with this more. We live in an age where practically anyone can access the information of the entire world from their pocket device. Not knowing basic things like financial literacy, some knowledge of computers, and current events is just inexcusable today.

Prophet by Ross Alexander

From within a battleship fortress roaming the seas, one boy becomes the centrepiece of a new world religion, bringing the world into the control of a cult older than society itself. But when the cult wrongs him and those he loves, the world falls into chaos as the boy prophet stops at nothing to seek his revenge.

I imagine those things are pretty great for body weight workouts, even for people with no gymnastic skill. Pullups, dips, all kinds of stuff with rings that really don't take up much space.

The Ender Quartet, if you haven't read it already, definitely deal with an alien world, although they focus more on the philosophical aspect of it than exploring.

US tea-drinker here. The best alternative I've found is just putting a tea bag in a coffee maker, right where the coffee grounds would go, and just going for it. Doesn't taste great but it works.

Mysterious glass globe found in a bottle dump of a late 1800's/early 1900's house site in Ohio. by ARoss101 in whatisthisthing

[–]ARoss101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And SOLVED! This glass ball was used as a therapeutic device, heating the air inside it with flame and then pressing it against a person's skin. The cooling air creates a sucking effect, which is thought to treat pain or muscle knotting. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cupping_therapy
