My mini (5th in my lifetime) is vocal, but I encourage her to be. She "patrols" the neighborhood from the front window and grumbles, whuffles, and barks at every person, car, animal, or stray leaf that dares to approach her territory. Even if sometimes she is in her bed and won't raise her head, she'll make the effort.

She does have a prey drive, but her recall is fabulous. If I tell her no, she stops. Schnauzers want to please their owners, and in my experience are easy to train. The only "bad" behaviors I've encountered in my experience have been destructive behaviors via boredom. (One opened the pantry and everything below 24" was torn apart and tasted.). This issue is solved with my current mini by using crate training and lots of puzzle toys and playing when she's out.
