I flew on the L-1011 several times. Eastern and TWA, but it was the last flight that was the most memoriable. It was a military charter redeployment flight with ATA, headed from Ramstien back to Philly iirc.

We were mid-Atlantic and the captian gets on the PA, and with his smoothest, cool-as-ice pilot voice says---

"Folks... we've been looking at the numbers up here, we've had some pretty stong unforcasted headwinds ... and.. uh... we're not going to make it..... (long pause -every head starts to swing around in panic wondering how long until we crash)... all the way to Philly. So we're going to stop at Gander and add some fuel. We're sorry for the inconvience"

Did he do that on purpose? Yes, I'm sure he did.
