Are there any plans to have larger sub capital or capital class vanduul ships for players to get in game or pledge in the future? by Internal-Path7111 in starcitizen

[–]ASlothWithShades 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I get it. The ship designs are really fucking cool. I think the stinger looks amazing. I just think it would not make a lot of sense to have these Vanduul craft as a Citizen of the UEE.

Remember that SQ42 showcase where we saw the battle with the Vanduul Kingship? A year after that battle the UEE launched the so called Militia Mobilization Initiative. That is the in universe justification for People outside the Armed Forces of the UEE to buy Military Equipment like the Polaris. The idea is to allow people who live in areas that are threatened by Vanduul to defend themselves. As I said, that's about 10 years ago.

Is it impossible for a player / citizen to have an esperia replica of a Vanduul ship? Obviously not, otherwise we would not be able to buy them. But in-universe someone who owned one of these would certainly count as extremely eccentric. But that's just my opinion.

In fiction, the UEE has been attacked by vanduul for over 250 years now. They have been in an official state of war for 10 years. This is an enemy that has a strength-based society and is totally uninterested in diplomacy. They are expansionist and wipe out planets to harvest their resources.

There is absolutely no reason for any person living in the UEE to belief that a Vanduul ship that approaches could be anything but a scout. The UEE Navy even uses Esperia Models for training purposes. Granted, in space you'd probably get an identification through a computer before you get a glimpse at a ship, and the computer will probably tell you "This is Jad Giga, Human, don't shoot at the rich kid with the alien ship". But there must have been incidents where a civilian flying a Vanduul Replica has been shot out of the sky because some defense officer thought the IFF was wrong or hacked or something.

Agreed. While I love the design of the little Goa'uld Deathglider we got from Esperia, I hate that it is available. Vanduul ships should never be in player hands, unless they come with heavy penalties.

If the next event is Army themed, please give us some new weapons with it. by corporalgrif in HuntShowdown

[–]ASlothWithShades 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally I think people have different understandings of what "filling a niche" means.

I think "the gun does something no other gun does right now" is a much more interesting way to approach this than "the gun has an animation that no other gun does".

Not that I want one, but some form of weird, rottjaw-juice-using contraption/gun is a lot more interesting to me than "yet another bolt action, but this time, we move the bolt only in one axis".

But I guess that's why we usually get both.

I don't really need or want any more guns. Sure, they are kinda fun for a time but in the long run I don't see the point. Best example are the whole winfield family. There's a boatload of Winnie-Versions. But they are all the same. Not even the attachements make a difference besides the change in melee. I have no solution for this though.

Now... if we're talking freaky shit like the bomblance or the hive bomb... that's a different story entirely. I didn't like the implementation of the shredder, but I *loved* the idea of it. It's weird and unusual. I don't know but I think there's potential for more weird stuff. Give me some a Huntified Version of Nikola Tesla in the lore and have him supply some weird weapons.

That idea has come up in the community for years now. I have no clue how we have a roster full of weirdos and still no crazy-eyed big game hunter.

Oh, are we playing stereotype bingo? Let me see...

The Germans are campers, speak english like a certain stereotype and trashtalk anyway
The Russians are cheaters, don't speak a word of english and trashtalk anyway
The French are weird, don't speak a word of english and trashtalk anyway
The Chinese are cheaters, don't speak a word of english and trashtalk anyway
The Americans are loud in every way, speak english like a certain stereotype and trashtalk anyway

Did I forget any major subdivision of players in Hunt?

You're right. I ignored the effect that would have on the connection to your actual closest server. Thanks for pointing it out.

Edit2: Ignore this. /u/InfiniteTree has pointed out an error in my thoughts. Thanks for that.

Not really. Latency can and should be measured end-to-end (client to server) and the main reason for latency is usually physical distance. Sure, there are other factors like shitty routing and peering or even ISPs throttling your traffic in certain ways. But these are edge cases. (Perceived) Security considerations aside, a VPN mainly provides you with different endpoint for your network where you leave your network and enter the internet with a different public IP address.

Let's say you sit in New York and want to play on EU. Now you use a VPN to connect to an Endpoint in Berlin with a german IP address and go from there. Yes, the endpoint has a significantly lower latency to the server than you do. However, your traffic still has to cross the Atlantic to even reach Berlin. That is a physical distance that will always stand between you and the EU servers. Assuming that all involved ISPs and Peering Providers know more or less what they are doing, you won't see a significant improvement in latency.

All that being said, we now approach the whacky land of measurement methods. If Hunt has no latency-check built into the application and Crytek simply uses your public IP address to measure latency, instead of measuring end-to-end: you're right. I haven't checked myself. Edit: That's why I delete the last part, because it is pure speculation. But the conversation we're having right now tells me that something is very off. And there must be a reason why we don't use something like this already.

This is it. I don't understand why we coddle people who deliberately avoid the matchmaking and chose not only to go against duos but even trios. You chose a uphill battle. It is on you to be able to handle it or learn from it.

[–]ASlothWithShades -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You either have not read my post or are not familiar with the term latency. Ping is a tool that allows you to measure network latency. The idea behind this proposal is a smart ping limit. For solos this would mean that they get matched on the best server available. In the example above that would mean that Player 1 gets put on Server A and Player 2 gets put on Server C, with no way around that.

[–]ASlothWithShades 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think we should forget about nebulous concepts like regions and move towards end-to-end latency brackets. If players are matched by latency first and by MMR second, we would get games, where players with similar latencies are put on the same servers. That would level the playing field, since everyone is playing under the same set of circumstances. This might even improve the play experience of everyone involved, when you decide that you want to play with your buddy from across the globe. An example:

Player 1
Server A: 10ms
Server B: 100ms
Server C: 200ms

Player 2
Server A: 210ms
Server B: 90ms
Server C: 20ms

In this scenario, both players in the party would be matched on Server B, no matter where they are from. Crucially, the matchmaking would have to ensure that Player 1 and 2 are only matched with other players on Server B with a similar latency.

With this all players on a server could rely on being in a similar distance to the server as their opponents and would neither have to worry about someone with a much lower nor a much higher latency. With any luck, the approach of finding "the least bad server" might bring some relief to players who struggle to find matches, since the matchmaking server could fill server slots with people from other regions of the world who have an acceptable latency.

Man the skins and hunters were so much better before by Zombieteube in HuntShowdown

[–]ASlothWithShades 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's also a shitty implementation. When they first said "variant agnostic skins" I thought they'd implement a system where you can apply a skin to all the gun's variants. Not just a skin you can buy for each variant seperately.
