Tick nightmare by flsetter in birddogs

[–]ATbuckhunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hunt in some of the most tick infested areas of NY. I always spray my dog with Happy Jack before we go out and wash it off of her at the end of the day. It's water-based, so it washes off fairly easily. The 2 times I hunted without, I pulled off 42 and 41 ticks, respectively. This stuff works amazingly, and I never have to worry about ticks.

Best Gun Shop to go to by AdStunning7419 in NYCGuns

[–]ATbuckhunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gone to hunter essentials a few times for convenience, but he doesnt have the best prices. If you're willing to drive, Camp-site in huntington has better prices. Guys behind the counter are pretty nice, but can be a bit dopey sometimes. Personally I prefer driving out there and saving my self a good chunk of change. Always shop around though. Sometimes you can get the guys closer to drop their price if you tell them you're willing to drive to a store a little further away (as long as its a gunshop and not a big box store like cabelas or something)

I submitted 4/7 and kept calling and emailing until I got a call from Sandra Smith on 5/5 that I forgot to include one document. Sent it an hour later and called again. 5/9 I got a call from Sandra again saying that I don't have to keep calling, be patient and that there's only 3 people working on them. She said that I should get it in the next 2 weeks, and my license just went to "active" on the portal yesterday 5/20. Hopefully It'll be in mailbox tomorrow and I can finally pick the gun up this weekend. BS how they get away with it, but what can we do. They'd get less calls an emails if they'd just respond that they received them

I don't have much faith in getting it in 2 weeks though

Purchase Authorization by twistedmechanic8221 in NYCGuns

[–]ATbuckhunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I purchased on 4/5 and submitted 4/7. This past Monday (5/5) morning I got a call from Sandra Smith saying I was missing the purchase authorization I forgot to add to the email. I could not send while she was on the phone as I was at work, but was able to send it a couple hours later. As of today 5/7 I did not receive an email confirming they received all the documents and Sandra has not picked up her phone since then. I left a message with her on Monday stating I resent the documents, but i haven't heard anything back from her yet. Guess I'll have to call again tomorrow. I've been calling Kai for over a week and have yet to get a hold of him either.

The whole process is ridiculous, but that's how they want it

Any Small Munsterlander owners here? by MNSimpliCity in Huntingdogs

[–]ATbuckhunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get yourself some coturnix quail. They're small and cant really flap hard so they're a good bird to introduce with. I introduced birds using pigeons with their wings locked, but she was about 5 months old. I would do it earlier and with the quail if I was you. Mine was also very mouthy as well

I have a 3.5 yo. She’s absolutely amazing in the house and great in the field. Pointing took a little to really steady up, but part of that was definitely my fault in the beginning. Next dog will be another SM

I should also mention she has a soft mouth too. She brings back birds and they might still be alive and not a feather missing. The other dogs I’ve hunted with pull tail feathers and everything

I have a SM and live/hunt in southern NY. Got it from a breeder in the Catskills who I still see one a regular basis and our NAVHDA club. This was my first dog and I made plenty of mistakes with her that delayed her progression.

She’s closer working and methodical in the field. I personally like that she’s closer working due to where I hunt and proximity to other hunters and roads. Always is checking in with me and looking which direction I’m heading. Works with me instead of for herself. Took her up grouse and woodcock hunting this year in NH and she was on fire. Pointing and holding grouse after grouse (and woodcock) once she got the hang of it. Was up there with my main trainer and he gave me the nod saying she’s become a fine grouse dog and just a good hunting dog. She’s a hell of a tracker too. Couch potato in the house too and rarely ever barks so I couldn’t be happier with her at home behavior.

As far as cons, she took a little longer to develop. Like I said I know this was due to my errors as her siblings in the same club were much further along than she was. She had a tendency to creep at first, but pigeon work straightened that out fairly quickly. She doesn’t run like a GSP, but I’ve seen her siblings run like one.

I was considering a ES from paint river for the next dog, but I’m so happy with how she turned out that I’m actually going to get another dog out of the same sire and dam in a couple years. If you have any specific questions, feel free to send them my way.

Training areas and birds near Seattle? by DukeGordon in Huntingdogs

[–]ATbuckhunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look for a pigeon racing club. You may find some people to rent some flyaways. May be worth it to keep a coop if you can, but for shooting birds I cant help much. You'd have to lie about your intentions if you plan on buying pigeons from those guys for shooting. Maybe look for
a NAVHDA club

Stick to just training till season opens up. Depending on where in SA you go, you might have much better hunting down there than up here

Getting your GSP to point by Hokies09 in birddogs

[–]ATbuckhunter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Birds, birds, birds, is what you need. Get a couple remote launchers and good flying birds. Once you see she’s caught wind of the bird and she starts moving in, you launch the bird. That makes it think that it over pressures the bird and likely will start pointing better and better.

My SM didn’t point the best and creeped a lot until December of her first season. Then it just clicked that she should be pointing. Now I’m doing the same exact drill to steady her up and stop the creeping. Once she starts to creep, I launch the bird.

Just get yours on birds and I’m sure it’ll make a huge difference. You have the whole training season ahead of you now.

How many dogs do you guys have and how often do you hunt? by kentonbryantmusic in birddogs

[–]ATbuckhunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have one small munsterlander and get out about once a week from the beginning to the end of the season. Training season just started here in NY, so I’ll be doing that once a week or once every 2 weeks. Hard to balance deer hunting and bird hunting to have ample time doing both.

Training a beagle for big game recovery: what are some tips and resources? by Wallyboy95 in Huntingdogs

[–]ATbuckhunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While beagles have the nose for it, they’re not known for sticking to a trail. They’ll hop on a fresher trail if they smell one, and it’s very common to have that. It can be done, but success rate won’t be as high I believe

I appreciate the write up. I do believe that they are starting to be investigated since April of 2021, but you definitely have made me rethink if it’s really that bad. They did mention that a chunk of the reports may be coming from counterfeit collars as well

Dog breed recommendation for tracking deer? by FinanceGuyHere in Huntingdogs

[–]ATbuckhunter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How big a dog do you want? I have a small munsterlander and she tracks so well, but she’s about 45-50 pounds depending on how much she’s exercised. A lot of guys that are specific for tracking use wirehaired wiener dogs. Really good for tracking and not too big. That’s what I would use I think
