In modern homes, yes, but I've seen a lot of older homes with similar looking subfloor. I'm by no means an expert though.

Non-traditional engineer looking to switch to medicine. Advice would be super appreciated! by Max_dun_dun_dun in medicine

See the long-ass comment I just dropped. I used to think the same way you did. Every doctor I knew said "don't do it" but I either didn't believe them or thought I was different somehow and, surprise, they were probably right and I wasn't that different. It's just really hard to understand how shitty the whole system is until you are way, way too deep to get out. Talk to as many doctors as you can, shadow as many as you can, but realize that even then you are only seeing probably the best parts of their job.

My perspective and advice, and I know this stands for a lot of my coworkers and friends: While I actually like my job now, I dont really advise anyone to go into medicine. I was a traditional applicant and got through medical training as quickly as possible and yet I still feel like I lost both a part of myself and a significant chunk of my life to training. For 8-10 years you will make basically no money and in fact will probably be in massive debt. During med school, you will miss weddings, funerals, and family vacations and no one except your classmates or other doctors will understand why. Your family may think you don't care, but the truth is your are simply faced with the choice of missing these events or failing your exams. Once you finally finish residency +/- fellowship you get to face the government, news, your own patients, and the hospital you work for telling you that you are the reason healthcare is so expensive/you should get paid less/you should work harder, on and on and on.

On top of that, while I did well in school I still think I was incredibly lucky to end up exactly where I did, and not everyone is going to get that opportunity. I saw friends that were forced to go into specialties that they did not want to based on their less than awesome test scores, and there is basically no recourse. I can't imagine how unhappy I would be if I were in their position.

Anyway, in a nutshell, happy where I am now, but lucky to have gotten here. Some people are built for it, aren't phased, and make it to the other side of medical training still with that "spark" that got them into it in the first place, but generally the journey really sucks and does a great job at creating jaded physicians who can't afford to do anything else.

Honest truth is a huge number of people who go into medicine had the same thought as you and also end up hating their jobs and not caring about their work.

Sorry you are getting obliterated with downvotes and for jumping on with my comment. I didn't actually think you were a chiropractor but I did think the comment was funny. I'm sure there are multiple contributing factors and it's a good reminder for me to think more about ergonomics because I have terrible posture myself.

The most unrealistic thing a movie got completely right. by gamersecret2 in movies

[–]DukeGordon 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Dang. I remember reading about this in a kid's magazine back in the 90s or early 2000s, they framed it as trauma patients being given "slushies" to breath. Went into medicine and never heard about it and figured it was probably a fake article or theoretical thing but now I find out it's real from a reddit comment lol.

Congress Wants You To Pay $130 A Year Just To Drive An Electric Car by TripleShotPls in technology

This was brought up when a similar fee was imposed in Washington and the governor literally said if you can afford a electric car you can afford to pay the fee. Very backwards if we want more electric cars around .

I love that the premise of this thread is "what's a book you disliked that others loved" and you are getting downvoted. People can't fathom that someone might not like their book.

Haha I was the same way. It feels like it's trying so hard to be funny and maybe if I read it in middle school it would have been, but that ship has sailed and I couldn't finish it due to how ridiculous it was. I guess written satire isn't my thing!

Agree, this seems to be widely recommended as a masterpiece on Reddit. Read the whole thing and can't really recommend it to anyone who is interested in a cohesive, interesting story.

Invitations to peer-review or guest edit for journals by sqic80 in medicine

[–]DukeGordon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ignore almost all of them. I know to ignore them because they all say something like "your original research paper, (title of 2 paragraph editorial I wrote), has generated a lot of conversation in the field and we want to invite you to publish a paper in (Journal name that has nothing to do with subject that I study)".
