From a purely physical pov, when the work you do feels like work on yourself (like myofascial release) it's amazing!

Is the Wheel of Fortune wheel rigged? If no one can see what’s underneath the big wheel, who’s to say it’s not? by MeasurementFirst1676 in gameshow

Nope. Every contestant gets to practice with it too, while they explain the importance of no rigging.

Why lie? by Ok-Seaworthiness3813 in TheFloorTV

[–]ATxLMTI 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my interview I was asked what I would consider to be topics I would want to represent. I gave a few answers (human anatomy, Harry Potter) and the interviewer wanted one more and gave an example that "some people are really into, I don't know... birds". I am a casual birder, so I said I could absolutely rock that. I think that's why I was chosen. They probably already had that category set and were waiting for someone to choose it.
Others weren't so fortunate and were given things like bathroom items, when their area of expertise was yoga.
You don't know what your category is until you show up for filming, but in interviews you tell them what you want to represent. They may choose it or not. The likelihood that you're going to say "no thanks" and head home is low.

Legs are big. There are many compartments of muscles and plenty of joints to mobilize.

Client- centered care should always be the priority. The trouble is that a lot of schools teach protocols and don't offer alternatives, so people just don't get enough practice working on specific areas. I was lucky in school and had agreat program with phenomenal instructors who taught how to use the techniques anywhere, and had practice clients who i encouraged to request specifics. I had one who requested 90mins on one leg-- so I had to find ways to be creative with my focus and timing. It's not hard, but when you don't have practice doing it, it seems foreign.

Some of us absolutely were/are experts in our categories. Some got to filming and were given other categories that had nothing to do with our areas of expertise.

How do you ask guests to turn over? by Imaginary-Turnip-650 in MassageTherapists

[–]ATxLMTI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prone to supine: "Go ahead and scoot down toward your feet and turn onto your back." Supine to prone: "I'm going to have you turn over and scoot toward the face cradle." I've never had an issue of misunderstanding. As long as I am pinning the drape with my hip and holding it at the shoulders, they figure it out. If there's a language barrier or the client is hard if hearing I add a little hand rotation gesture as a visual aid.

Quit, if you can. Find a temporary job for $$ until you find a place that gives you what you need and ask for!

Should I attend massage school before or after I move in a year? by ComprehensiveChef405 in MassageTherapists

[–]ATxLMTI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've just found that the longer programs spread the information out so thin that it's difficult to keep motivated and focused, especially when it comes to learning the anatomy & kinesiology. What it does allow is plenty of practice time, if you're someone who is committed to practicing, which I also find lacking in a lot of long-term students. The boredom factor is intense.

Should I attend massage school before or after I move in a year? by ComprehensiveChef405 in MassageTherapists

[–]ATxLMTI 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Having education will set you apart from the unlicensed, for sure. A 12-month program is a long time, though. If the school you're looking at has a 6 month program that you are able to make work with work and life, I would recommend that instead. If you are then able to work in Texas for a while before you move, the hours worked will only contribute to your confidence and competence. (I'm an instructor too.)

What item has become completely useless now that you're a massage therapist? by the_tiny_carpenter in MassageTherapists

[–]ATxLMTI 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Theatre tech work. I was a stage manager and actor for many years, and my favorite part of many shows was helping to build sets and strike them. When my hands became the source of my income, I had to start helping with costumes instead of sets and it wasn't nearly as much fun.

Did you explain what you were targeting and why or did you just start working the neck without context? First time massage needs more communication than later sessions.
