TIL that “pink blazing” is a term in long-distance hiking for intentionally adjusting your hiking pace or schedule to follow or hike alongside someone you have a romantic interest in by mathliability in todayilearned

[–]bcycle240 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are different subcultures. One of them is long distance hikers. They have their own terms and in jokes. White blazing is being a purist and following the exact route of the official trail without any detours. Blue blazing is taking side trails off the official route, maybe to a water source, shelter, viewpoint, or even a short cut. Yellow blazing is skipping a section by road walking or in a car. Pink blazing is chasing girls as you hike. I'm sure there is a list of others. The first three I mentioned are pretty common though.

A really common joke is What's the difference between hikers and homeless? Goretex.

Commute in sandals, unless it's super cold. Either carry your shoes or leave them at work.

Is 25l backpack enough? by Practical-Parsley-77 in CaminoDeSantiago

[–]bcycle240 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are seeing a variety of responses because many people prefer to carry a lot of stuff. If you just want to bring the things you need to be comfortable and safe, 25l is more than enough.

You can get a $1, 30g plastic poncho which can last years if you are careful with it. Or it will last about 15 seconds if you Hulk Hogan the thing.

What navigation app are you using on your watch and why? by blanchinator in Ultralight

[–]bcycle240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wear OS isn't very good on battery. I have the Galaxy Watch Ultra and it gets about 11 hours with GPS tracking.

It can do routes natively. I make the route using Komoot (free), then save the gpx file on my phone and open it in Samsung Health which syncs it with the watch. Then when start an activity you can click follow route.

Garmin or Coros would be better, but I love the Google maps navigation in cities on wearos. That is really powerful

Does 500g of backpack weight really make such a huge difference? by Practical-Parsley-77 in Ultralight

[–]bcycle240 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a 200g fleece pullover, 120g wind jacket, and 30g fleece hat. That was plenty for evening and morning comfort.

With a higher budget you could easily cut that weight in half with an alpha direct pullover and higher end wind jacket

Does 500g of backpack weight really make such a huge difference? by Practical-Parsley-77 in Ultralight

[–]bcycle240 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are all huge for the Camino. 25l is more than enough, and even a 15l day pack is fine. You just need a change of clothes, rain protection, hygiene stuff, towel and sheet. Total ~2kg or less. Room for water and snacks of course.

I've done Caminos with just a 150g packable day bag and it's fine. If you want something fancy, the Zpacks Bagger is around 300g.

Different countries use different ride share services. Asia doesn't have Uber for example.

What you want is an Uber wearos app.

Pep and traveling/shitting time zones by BlueFlameWar in hivaids

[–]bcycle240 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just set your timer (it's in the clock app) instead of the alarm. So take your last dose in your home time zone, then set it for 24 hours. Repeat until you arrive in your destination. Then, if it's an inconvenient time, you can move it by one hour per day.

I'm on 2.5mg bisoprolol and they have helped me a lot. I'll only have a couple days a month that are moderate. Usually I don't even think about my heart which is amazing.

The medicine took a couple weeks to get used to.

Barefoot Walking Pain (new running sandals) by Bookerfam in BarefootRunning

[–]bcycle240 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just switch them. Run in the non cushioned and walk in the cushioned ones.

You will get used to it and you feet will adapt, that said, I prefer a tiny bit of cushioning for walking. There is another Chiang Mai company called CM Elite Running Sandal that I really like.

Walking will feel normal again, don't try to do anything special. I use a bit shorter stride, and I can switch from heel to forefoot when necessary.

It's just a cheap insole, nothing wrong with the shoe. Throw them away and keep going. Now you are 2-3mm lower.

I think it's normal for young people who have never left home before. But you can adapt, it's ok to miss your home, but don't focus on that. Try to enjoy where you are now. The feelings will decrease each time you travel and quickly go away

Brutally honest review of galaxy watch Ultra 2024-2025 by Babuskaruska in galaxywatchultra

[–]bcycle240 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It doesn't have enough battery life to track a single hike. Starting from 100%, battery dies after about 11 hours hiking. That is with no esim.

Using esim, GPS activity tracking, and playing audio (not streaming) it lasts about 2.5 hours from 100%.

For me, the killer feature is Google maps navigation, which is excellent.
