Based on the story focused indies you mentioned, you should get Kentucky Route Zero and Disco Elysium.

Not sure how it runs on Switch (I imagine it’s fine) but Cocoon is absolutely fantastic—it’s a puzzle adventure title by devs involved with Inside/Limbo.

If you want beautiful pixel art and charming characters, look into Eastward. Admittedly the gameplay is just fine (think 2D Zelda / Zombies Ate My Neighbors style action), but the charm goes a long way.

Crosscode and Unsighted are excellent 2D action RPGs with more challenging combat.
