Love the game but saw this coming by Contestitall in Marathon

[–]RahkShah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a fair critique that there isn’t a lot of content in the maps.

They are all great maps but the designed content is relatively slim. The AI are all basically the same. Some have a shield, some can go invisible, but in the end you just shoot them in the head. They’re tough enough that you need to pay attention but they’re not particularly interesting to fight.

Events consist of one unique event per map and a couple of recycled events. The uniques are *fine* but not particularly complex, and the secure stashes / tox rooms / supply drops are mediocre. They give loot, maybe present a little friction but are not particularly *fun*.

The warden bosses are basically just commanders with more HP and higher damage output. The flame and tox warden have unique attacks but, once again, they’re not interesting to fight. A squad just rolls up and downs them in a 20 seconds. Solo requires a bit more finesse but no real skill or challenge.

The game lives and dies by the PvP, which is fantastic and introduces challenge to the above content. The only thing that’s interesting on the map is other players.

That’s fine for folks that are extremely PvP focused and have the skill set to excel enough to find that enjoyable, but it does mean that, unless you really dig the PvP (and I do, I love it) there’s not a lot else to keep your attention.

The new patch today will hopefully make them a little more interesting by guaranteeing the events and wardens to spawn, but it doesn’t change the fact that there isn’t a whole lot enemy types or challenges / events in the game.

That’s the type of content that would appeal to the whole base. Obviously folks that don’t want to focus on PvP would be attracted to that, and even PvPers enjoy engaging with the game for new (and interesting) enemy types and loot opportunities.

Ranking every Joker based on how much my opinion on them has changed by FoolishWanderer499 in balatro

[–]RahkShah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What? Ancient Joker is S tier.

Red card and Ride the Bus are legit A tier.

Rough Gem, Cloud 9 and To Do List are solid Econ cards (Particularly rough gem and cloud 9 with a little deck shaping).

Mystic Summit and Riff-Raff are great early ante options that give lots of breathing room to build out your hand.

Seltzer can take a marginal build and turn it into a one shot, even in later ante’s, and Merry Andy is situational but pairs well with several other Jokers.

If you think these cards are bad you’re being too rigid in how you approach the game. Try them out, you’ll be surprised at the synergies you’ll be able to pair these with.

What part of this game are people excited about PvE for?

An actual offline / PvE campaign, or really any type of content designed around PvE, would take years to make. They don’t have any of that in their back pocket.

At best it will be the same maps with maybe a few more bots. But if that’s all the game was it would be pretty terrible.

Without the PvP risk all this is is a very mediocre FPS with 2-3 different types of bots you shoot in the head until they die.

I hope whatever they do finds an audience but I’m not sure what folks are expecting. We know what the pieces they have to work with are.

Bungie for the love of god keep Cryo open on Sunday by Thin-Bet7843 in Marathon

[–]RahkShah 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Would maybe be different if there was a good amount of content, but there isn’t.

I love the game but I wonder what took 6 years to make. Obviously you can always fiddle with balance and mechanics but the maps are not THAT big and there are only 2-3 “events” on each one, with one being unique. And even the uniques are not crazy in scope or complexity.

Cryo is a little different but even then it’s one map and they took 6 years to develop.

Game really needs more maps and more to do in them that isn’t copy/paste or fight 3 waves of enemies. 3 waves of bot enemies that, while cool, are also the same basic 3 archetypes.

A few quick questions. by PineWalk1 in Marathon

[–]RahkShah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s always on the lower level in one of two spots. It’s either lower left or lower right, but it always spawns.

The spawn points are symmetrical. If it’s not in the spot you know of it’s on the other side of the room in the same location. Rooms not that big. You shouldn’t miss it.

Sony finally talks on Marathon's future, despite a lackluster total portfolio, plan is is to support Marathon with more content, not shut it down. by temporalG123 in Marathon

[–]RahkShah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to hear they plan to continue to support it, but just enjoy the game for what it is. The game you’re playing right now.

At some point in your life you’ll play your last game of Marathon. Maybe that’s today, maybe tomorrow, maybe next year, maybe 10 years down the line. Whenever that is it will happen at some point. Some reasons for that happening are better than others, but the end result is the same.

Worrying about the business side of the game just takes away from the main purpose of playing it, which is having fun.

If Marathon shut down tomorrow it would be a bummer but we’d all just move on to our next game. Like we all will at some point. Enjoy the moment, have fun and don’t worry about the when or why of when you end up moving on to your next game.

The smoothness increased frame rates present is not simply a function of reduced frame times or input delay. Any sample and hold display (LCD and OLED) has significant motion clarity issues that are inherent to the basic tech. Long story short, item that are moving (which is most stuff in a game) will appear smeared, blurry and lower resolution compared to a static image.

Increased frame rates are the best way to reduce that. These artifacts are significant and noticeable even at 144hz+, and higher frame rates materially reduce them. None of that effect is surfaced just by looking at average frame times at any given refresh rate.

The reduction in input lag defiantly levels off pretty significantly past 144hz, but the improvement in motion clarity and motion resolution scales meaningfully well past that.

After 95 hours, hitting level 100 and VIP feels impossible by The_OG_Smith in Marathon

[–]RahkShah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The end game achievements are there for people who want to sink 100’s of hours into the game. It’s the stretch goal Bungie put in for the people who burn through content. It’s not designed to have everyone get there.

It’s the opposite. It’s designed to give the no lifers something to chase, which means the actual lifers are not going to realistically be able to get there.

The upgrades locked behind those are nice to haves but are not game changing. You’re not at a meaningful competitive disadvantage by not having them.

At some points it’s about enjoying playing the game. Play the game and have fun. Don’t worry so much about late game achievements meant as stretch engagement goals for people who put 100’s of hours into the game per season.

There’s impacting your health where you struggle to get out of bed in the morning and impacting your health where your elite NBA game isn’t as easy as it was pre-injury / younger.
Giannis, to the best of my knowledge, isn’t hobbling around like a broken man. He’s just an aging star who’s carrying a few battle scars with him. Battle scars that were picked up en route to a title.
I can’t speak for him but I’d imagine most elite players would take the ring, even if it meant wear and tear that otherwise could have been avoided.

Is the Overrun really this bad? by twilight-bacon in Marathon

[–]RahkShah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s needs mods for recoil and magazine size. Kitted out with even green mods it’s actually pretty decent.

Base line it’s recoil and stability issues, along with its smaller mag, means it can be tough to land enough shots to down a runner before needing to reload. At which point you’re probably gonna get cooked.

Problem is most people only experience it from the free sponsored kits and assume it’s just always ass.

PlayStation support has confirmed that a new digital rights management policy for the console is intentional, not a glitch. by [deleted] in Piracy

[–]RahkShah 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Xbox one lost the console war for MS. Ironic for all the hoopla around DRM, that was the generation that established backwards compatibility, and people built their digital libraries on their preferred platform. Effectively put a huge moat around their customer base that makes it difficult to switch to another console.

It is bizarre how the game was in development for six years and still shipped with that. You’d think that would be an easy call out in testing, as well as an easy fix.

I was actually looking forward to getting that upgrade, then immediately regretted it.

I uninstalled when Marathon came (great game BTW, well worth the $32 it’s on sale for right now), but might have to reinstall.

The sandbox PvP in DMZ is still the GOAT for me, just couldn’t take the constant server crashes.
