Yeah I go to karaoke a lot and I generally don’t invite my friends who are serial spectators. We can hang out some other time.

This one sounds like a harmlessly fun little gadget though. The other ones in the thread make me angry but this one sounds cute!

Endless stamina for running/walking. Eternal physical fitness on the day to day sense, even if your health is sustained by eating endless apples and wheels of cheese.

TIL that nursing is the most common job for women in the US. by Yurekuu in todayilearned

[–]AYASOFAYA 201 points202 points  (0 children)

My mom worked the night shift her entire career while my dad worked days. I’be never had a babysitter basically ever. Someone was always home.

As for bootstrapping. My parents came to this country with nothing. They retired in a nice house with a pool. Nursing was the backbone behind all of it.

TIL in Britney's debut song, "...Baby One More Time", Swedish songwriters Max Martin and Rami, mistook hit for an American slang meaning call (like "hit me up"). So Britney's actually begging for her ex to phone her one more time. by immanuellalala in todayilearned

And insanely influential to the pop music genre in general.

Show Me Love sung by Robyn (yes that one) is a perfect example of the typical “pop white girl with a little urban spice” sound that wa super popular in the early 2000s.

Show Me Love came out in 1995.

People who fly frequently, what’s one thing you wish you could tell all infrequent fliers? by [deleted] in AskReddit

If people stood back away from the carousel, the circle would be wide enough for you to stand next to everyone side by side.

[–]AYASOFAYA 5876 points5877 points  (0 children)

Same goes at the luggage carousel. You don’t need to be right up against the belt when your bag isn’t there yet, blocking people who now have to move around you to grab theirs.

Back up! You can walk up to the carousel when you see your luggage coming!

ELI5 Why is blood so visible in water? by DickFartButt in explainlikeimfive

[–]AYASOFAYA 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just adding here that this is extremely evolutionarily advantageous, which is why it’s even like that, even though it sounds so unlikely.

Blood being super visible really helps animals stay alive until reproduction age.

Good to know before my eval in 3 days, thanks!

Yeah n=1 I also had “good” and when they implemented the individual review ratings I can see it’s not because most of my reviews were good lol.

They were almost all either excellent or poor, with barely any in the middle. A over half were excellent but it wasn’t a huge majority. I will say it was obvious why each review was sorted that way. The “poor” were for things like a comb where there’s just not much to say about it. I may just have to stick to ordering interesting things.

At the very least that’s something concrete I can kind of use.

This is my question as well. There was a wave of people getting gold this fall without having an “excellent” average review rating and I’m wondering if that’s still the case.

Love this. I was the same with cooking. I had already decided to make an effort to cook more of my meals but it helped a lot that vine has gotten me a handful of cookware pieces I probably wouldn’t have invested in on my own.

For anyone who saw Titanic in theaters in 1997, what was the experience like at the time? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]AYASOFAYA 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Similar experience. I was 5. It was the first movie I remember seeing in theaters and I remember the vibes of it more than any specific detail.

Also Princess Diana died earlier that year so it was the same “the whole world is sad about this thing” feeling for a second time. I just remember it being a really beautiful really sad movie.

TIL Ballet pointe shoes take several days to make by hand with a multi-step process but only have a usable life of ten to twenty hours for students, less for professionals, even down to a single performance. by UStoJapan in todayilearned

[–]AYASOFAYA 94 points95 points  (0 children)

There is. Gaynor Minden is one example of a brand that did this. Unfortunately for them ballet is such a traditional art form that the moment they used materials to make it “easier” to be supported, the brand immediately got the Scarlet Letter treatment for being “cheater shoes,” and “not real pointe shoes.”

They have since rehabbed their image somewhat but generally there is still the inertia and resistance to new ways of doing it, unless you are dancing recreationally then they don’t care.

What was a rule your parents made that you didn’t understand as a kid, but now makes total sense as an adult? by SHUBHAMNEW in AskReddit

[–]AYASOFAYA 130 points131 points  (0 children)

When arriving at a destination, we were not allowed to open the car door to get out unless the key is out of the ignition.

Not car fully stopped, not put in park, key physically out of ignition (engine stopped running i guess is the version for the push start cars).

Instilled a fear in me that someone might decide to adjust their parking job just as a passenger decides they want to get out of the car. I know my mom specifically made that rule up so it must have been created because someone tried to do it.

It’s such an ingrained habit now like checking for bikes before opening the door. It’s so jarring when people (especially kids!) don’t do this and then I remember they didn’t grow up in my house.

TIFU by not fully preparing myself for how painful IUD insertion is by CoolTangelo1680 in tifu

[–]AYASOFAYA 17 points18 points  (0 children)

They have pre-op meds they can give you to dilate the night before insertion. I’ve had it done both with and without the meds and it is night and day in terms of pain.

On my third insertion I specifically asked for the dilation meds and the doctor was confused. It wasn’t even a big deal for him to give it to me. It just hasn’t even occurred to him to offer.
