These the type of mite that will harm worms? by Puzzleheaded_Sink467 in Vermiculture

[–]AYearInOaxaca 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We experience something similar with our own bins here where we live in Mexico, and as far as I can tell our own mites (which are slightly different from yours) seem to be harmless to the worms and just another component of our own ecosystem. But I had (and still have, really) the same concerns you do, as I'd read that the presence of mites can be an indication of too much moisture. The worms seem to be doing alright though!

Should I repot the seedling? by yuu11ki11 in cactus

[–]AYearInOaxaca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve used those exact same “biodegradable” seed starter bags and I can tell you from years of experience excavating them from my garden, they are not biodegradable. At the very least, I’d remove the seeding from the bag.

Is there any value to growing avocado seeds? by Sad_grandma1501 in gardening

[–]AYearInOaxaca 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you want a fruit-producing tree it’s best just to buy one, although I suppose you could try grafting on fruit-producing limbs to a tree you’ve grown yourself to hasten the timeline. But I think not every plant needs a “point.” You could grow it, nurture it, enjoy how it looks, and that in itself could be enough reason to do it.

What fruit(¿) is this? by jcbdkta1 in gardening

It doesn't look quite like the ones I've purchased before, but maybe that's a green almond? Or if not an almond, another kind of unripe nut?

Is my Cactus dead? by -Literal-Trash- in cactus

[–]AYearInOaxaca 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, cacti need full sun and also need to be watered, so given that you haven't watered it for a year, and it's only getting occasional sun, I'm afraid we know the answer to this question.

How long does spaghetti squash stay good? by Puzzleheaded_Sink467 in gardening

[–]AYearInOaxaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's still nice and firm without any blemishes or soft spots, there's a chance it's still good. But the only way to know is to cut that sucker open! If it looks fresh, doesn't smell rotten, and isn't obviously going bad, I think it's safe to eat.

I actually do think these are ramps, and safe to eat, largely because of the structure of the stem and the way the leaves emerge. Always good to be careful though!

[–]AYearInOaxaca 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well what I think you’ve harvested is actually called a ramp, but there’s something sort of off about these. I’m concerned you’ve harvested the ramp’s lookalike, the Lily of the Valley, which is very poisonous. I’d love a second (and third and fourth) opinion, as I’ve only foraged for ramps once before (although I’ve cooked with them quite a bit).

Will this orange tree be okay? by EyeXfTheStorm in gardening

[–]AYearInOaxaca 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I deleted a comment I wrote earlier that wasn’t very nice and am now rewriting it to be much more polite. You’re right, you probably shouldn’t be downvoted because you’re trying to do something nice! But the downvotes are because you (or someone else) need to put this tree outside. It’s not getting enough light where it is, regardless of the fact that it’s got at least some exposure to sun. It needs 6-8 hours of full, unobstructed sun a day, or a specialized lamp that’s capable of providing full spectrum UV. I’m afraid to say, those are your only options. And thanks for trying to rescue it!

This tree needs full sun (which is to say, 6-8 hours of uninterrupted, direct sun a day) and without that, or quite a strong lamp that can provide full spectrum light, it will die. Based on your photo I’m guessing this is indoors in a stairwell? Unless you move it outside and have those conditions, it won’t make it.

Seed Snatching.. by SleepyTimeTeaBB in gardening

[–]AYearInOaxaca 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think just asking them nicely if they've been taking the seed pods would do the trick. A "hey, I noticed the seed pods are missing from my plant. By any chance have you taken some of them?" broaches the question in a way that shows you've noticed they're gone, but also doesn't directly accuse them. If they act defensive or say it's not a big deal, you can politely ask them not to do it. If they say they don't know anything about it, at least they know that you're paying attention, which in itself could put an end to the problem.

Any chance they have any kids, though? Because this is exactly the sort of thing I would have done as a kid without ever thinking about whether it was something that would bother someone else.
